If you have lost a factory job—or a closure is coming—contact your nearest American Job Center (AJC) and ask for a dislocated-worker appointment. The center can explain local job-search help, training options, and whether you may qualify for additional support. If the layoff is announced but you are still working, ask about Rapid Response now; you do not have to wait until your last day to seek information.
Where can I find free job-placement help near me?
Use CareerOneStop’s American Job Center locator to find a nearby center. CareerOneStop describes a nationwide network of nearly 2,300 AJCs, a rounded count accessed in 2026; locations and services can change. The centers provide free employment assistance, but the help available varies locally.

Call before visiting. Explain that you were laid off from a factory, or give the announced closure and expected layoff date, and request a dislocated-worker intake or appointment. Confirm the center’s hours, whether you need to register or schedule, and what documents to bring. Ask about job-search assistance, career counseling, skills assessment, résumé and interview workshops, hiring events, and referrals to training.

Ask your employer, union representative if you have one, or state Rapid Response/Dislocated Worker Unit whether there will be an information session or on-site assistance. You can also ask the AJC how to reach the state team. Rapid Response is intended to connect workers affected by layoffs with reemployment services, training information, unemployment-insurance information, and other benefits. The U.S. Department of Labor cautions: “Services, resources, and benefits vary from state to state.” What is offered depends on the state and the layoff.

Use that contact to ask how to file for unemployment insurance and where to get information about health coverage, pensions, and other transition issues. Contact the state unemployment office or AJC about filing; do not wait until you have chosen a training program to ask about these time-sensitive matters.
Can I get job training paid for after a layoff?
Possibly. The Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) Dislocated Worker program is designed to help eligible people return to work after job loss, mass layoffs, trade impacts, or economic-sector changes. It is not a guarantee of tuition payment or income support for every person who loses a job. Eligibility rules, services, and available funds depend on the state and local area.

Ask an AJC whether you may qualify, which career and training services are available, what documentation is required, and whether funding is currently available. The Department of Labor’s Dislocated Worker program information describes the federal program; the AJC can explain how it is administered locally.

Start with the state’s WIOA-eligible training directory, which CareerOneStop points job seekers toward, then ask the AJC whether both you and the specific program may qualify for funding. A listing does not guarantee that you will receive funds. Verify details with the center and training provider before paying or enrolling.

- Program and provider approval: Is this particular program and provider currently listed as WIOA-eligible in the state directory?
- Your eligibility and possible costs: Do you meet local requirements, what funding is available, and what might remain for you to pay? Ask about tuition, fees, required equipment, and transportation, as well as what funding may cover.
- Time and schedule: How long does the program take, and can you attend around your other obligations?
- Credential and employer recognition: What credential or license will you earn, and do local employers recognize it?
- Local job prospects: What openings and wages are available in the occupation the training targets?
- Provider outcomes: Ask for completion and placement information if the provider has it.
If you are unsure whether you qualify, CareerOneStop directs you to your local AJC for guidance. Do not assume a program is the right choice merely because it appears in a directory.
Could trade-related support apply to my factory layoff?
If production moved abroad or imports may be connected to the job loss, ask the AJC or Rapid Response team whether Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA) could apply to your employer and affected workers. A trade connection does not automatically make every worker eligible. TAA is a separate route to ask about; it is not the same as WIOA Dislocated Worker services or Rapid Response.

What other local job-search help can I use?
Ask the AJC about nearby job fairs, workshops, and other Department of Labor employment programs. Public libraries may also offer résumé assistance or computer access. Services differ by location, so contact each organization to confirm what is currently available and whether you need to register.
