How to Find Restaurants, Menus, and Dishes in Google Maps

Google Maps can help you shortlist nearby restaurants, inspect a place profile, and view menu items or dish photos when the business or customers have supplied that information. Search for a restaurant, cuisine, category, dish, or location; open the listing; then use the Menu section in the Maps app. Because listings and dish data can be incomplete or out of date, confirm important prices, ingredients, availability, and dietary details with the restaurant.

Start with the route that matches what you know

Use Search when you have a specific restaurant, cuisine, neighborhood, landmark, or dish in mind. Use the mobile app’s Explore tab when you want ideas without choosing a destination first. Both routes lead to restaurant place profiles, where you can compare practical details such as address, opening hours, ratings, reviews, price information when shown, and whether a menu is available.

Find restaurants with Google Maps Search

On a computer

  1. Open Google Maps in a browser.
  2. Enter a restaurant name, a cuisine such as “Thai restaurant,” a general category such as “restaurants,” or a phrase describing the place you need.
  3. Add a location when you want results centered on a particular area. For example, combine the type of place with a neighborhood, city and state, or a nearby landmark.
  4. Select a result to open its place information. The profile may show the street address, hours, telephone number, ratings, reviews, price information, photos, and other details supplied for that business.
  5. When the interface offers them, apply filters such as price or opening hours. Google notes that available filters can differ by location and language.

A query such as “vegetarian restaurants near [landmark]” is generally more useful than searching only for “food” because the added context narrows the geographic and category intent. If you are looking for a particular dish, you can try the dish name together with a neighborhood or city, but Google’s documented dish-browsing flow begins by opening a restaurant profile and its menu. Search results should therefore be treated as a way to build a shortlist, not as proof that every result serves that dish.

On an Android phone or tablet

  1. Open the Google Maps app and tap the search box.
  2. Search for the restaurant, cuisine, category, or location. Include a city, neighborhood, or landmark if the map is covering too wide an area.
  3. Tap a result to open its place profile and review the address, hours, phone number, ratings, reviews, and other available information.
  4. Use More Filters when it appears to narrow results. The exact choices depend on the device, language, and country or region.

Google’s mobile and desktop instructions are similar, but buttons and filter names are not guaranteed to match across platforms. If a filter shown in a guide is missing from your screen, it may simply not be offered for your current location or language.

How Google decides which restaurants appear first

Google says local results are influenced primarily by relevance, distance, and prominence. Relevance reflects how well a listing matches your query; distance reflects proximity to the location Google associates with the search; and prominence reflects how well-known or established a place appears to be from available information. These factors do not amount to an independent food-quality score.

Results can also be personalized using your Maps interactions, recent searches, saved or starred places, reviews, and information from other Google products. Two people searching from the same general area can therefore see different ordering. The first listing is a convenient starting point, not an objective ranking of the best food.

  • Check the map position and travel time rather than assuming the first result is closest.
  • Read recent reviews for information relevant to your visit, such as service at the time you plan to arrive.
  • Look at the listing’s hours and phone number before traveling.
  • Compare several profiles when menu availability, price information, or dietary suitability matters.

Google explains its search and ranking factors in its computer help for searching locations and its Android help for searching locations.

Use Explore when you want nearby inspiration

  1. Open the Google Maps mobile app.
  2. Tap Explore.
  3. Review the dining recommendations and lists shown for the area.
  4. Open a restaurant card to inspect its place profile, location, hours, reviews, and any menu information.

Explore lists can include popular restaurants and recommendations that change with the time of day. Google also describes trending and partner-driven lists, but those lists are available only in selected cities or areas. Their absence does not mean there are no restaurants nearby; it means that particular Explore feature is not available for your current area.

Explore is broad by design. Once you find a promising place, switch to the profile and make the same checks you would make after a normal search: location, opening hours, reviews, price information where shown, and menu availability. See Google’s Explore-tab help for the feature’s current availability notes.

Open a restaurant profile before relying on a result

Tap or click the restaurant’s name or map marker to open its place profile. This is the central page for deciding whether a result fits your needs. Depending on what has been supplied and displayed, you may find:

  • Street address and map location
  • Opening hours
  • Telephone number
  • Ratings and written reviews
  • Price information when Google has it
  • Photos, including food images
  • A Menu entry or a link to an external menu
  • An Order Online option when an ordering provider is available through Google

Do not infer that a missing item is proof that the restaurant does not offer it. A profile may lack a menu, photos, or ordering button simply because the business has not supplied the information, customer contributions are absent, or the relevant feature is unavailable in that market.

See a restaurant menu in Google Maps

Menu steps in the mobile app

  1. Search for the restaurant in Google Maps, or tap its listing on the map.
  2. Scroll through the place information on the profile.
  3. Tap Menu when that entry is available.
  4. Browse the menu sections and listed items. Depending on the profile, an item can include a description, price, photograph, or other details.

Google’s menu and dish instructions are documented in Add & explore dishes in Google Maps. The exact placement of the Menu entry can change with the app version and the information attached to the business profile.

What a menu can contain

Restaurant owners can publish menu sections and individual items, add descriptions and prices, upload menu photographs or PDF files, and provide a link to a menu hosted elsewhere. Customers can also contribute menu photographs. As a result, two restaurants with equally complete profiles may present menus in different formats: structured item lists, photographs of a printed menu, a PDF, an external web page, or a mixture.

A menu shown in Maps is not automatically a live point-of-sale menu. Prices, ingredients, portion sizes, taxes, temporary specials, and sold-out items can change after the profile was updated. Use the displayed information to decide which restaurants to investigate, then verify details that affect your order.

Find a specific dish and inspect its photos or reviews

From the restaurant’s Menu section

  1. Open the restaurant’s place profile.
  2. Tap Menu.
  3. Look through the listed sections and dish names.
  4. Tap a dish thumbnail when one is shown to open related photos and reviews.

Dish thumbnails can help you recognize presentation and serving size, while reviews may provide context about a customer’s experience. They are discovery aids, not a guarantee that the dish is available today or prepared to a particular recipe.

When you know only the dish

Search for the dish name together with a city, neighborhood, or landmark to generate candidate restaurants. Then open each candidate profile and check its Menu section or menu link. Because Google explicitly says that not every dish gets added, a search that produces no dish entry does not establish that no nearby restaurant serves it. Searching the cuisine or restaurant type as a second step can produce additional candidates.

For allergies, religious dietary requirements, strict nutritional targets, or a dish needed for a specific event, use Maps to identify likely restaurants and then ask the restaurant directly about ingredients, preparation, cross-contact, availability, and current price.

Understand missing, incorrect, or old dish information

Google says not every dish is added to Maps. Menu completeness depends on the business-profile information and on customer contributions. User-submitted names and photos can be useful, but they may be incomplete, incorrectly labeled, or no longer reflect what the restaurant serves.

Google allows users to suggest corrections and to report a dish as inaccurate, inappropriate, or not served at that location. If you see a clear error, open the relevant dish or photo and use the available correction or reporting control in the app. The exact labels can vary as Google updates the interface.

For decisions where an error would matter, use a second source controlled by the restaurant—such as its current menu link—or call the listed phone number. This is especially important for:

  • Food allergies and severe intolerances
  • Vegetarian, vegan, halal, kosher, or other dietary requirements
  • Time-limited specials and seasonal dishes
  • Prices, fees, taxes, and portion sizes
  • Whether an item is currently in stock

How menu updates reach Google Maps

Business owners can edit menu sections and items, descriptions, prices, photographs, PDFs, and menu links through their Google Business Profile. Google’s menu-editor guidance says changes may take 24–48 hours to appear on Maps and Search. That is an operational display estimate, not a guarantee that every change will be visible after exactly two days.

If a restaurant tells you a menu was recently changed but Maps still shows the previous version, the delay may be within that 24–48-hour window. If the information remains wrong after the update should have appeared, use the restaurant’s own menu or contact the business rather than treating the Maps entry as definitive.

Read Google’s About the menu editor for the owner-side options and update timing.

Order from a restaurant when Google shows the option

  1. Open the restaurant’s profile in Google Maps or Google Search.
  2. Look for Order Online.
  3. Select the available ordering provider and follow the ordering flow. Google may send you to the provider’s website to browse the menu and place the order.
  4. Review the provider’s menu, fees, delivery area, estimated time, and final total before submitting the order.

The button appears only when the restaurant has at least one ordering provider available through Google. Google’s help also notes that the option may not appear while the restaurant is closed. Availability and the exact flow vary by country and language. If Order Online is absent, Google’s documented explanation is that no ordering provider is available through Google for that restaurant at that time; it does not prove that the restaurant never accepts orders by phone or through another channel.

See Google’s food-ordering help and Google’s explanation of food ordering in Search for the provider and country or language caveats.

A practical workflow for choosing a place

  1. Define the search. Start with the restaurant name, cuisine, category, or dish. Add a neighborhood, city, or landmark for geographic precision.
  2. Build a shortlist. Open several profiles instead of accepting the first result automatically.
  3. Check logistics. Confirm the address, opening hours, phone number, and likely travel time.
  4. Check evidence of the food. Open Menu, inspect dish thumbnails and reviews, and follow any restaurant-provided menu link.
  5. Check fit and price. Compare available price information and read reviews relevant to your requirements.
  6. Verify critical details. Contact the restaurant for allergies, changing specials, availability, current pricing, or any information that is missing or unclear.
  7. Choose an ordering path. Use Order Online if it is offered and the provider’s final details suit you; otherwise use the restaurant’s stated contact method.

Troubleshoot common Maps problems

The restaurant I want does not appear

  • Try the restaurant’s exact name and add the city or neighborhood.
  • Search the cuisine or category instead, then scan the map area.
  • Check spelling and remove overly specific terms.
  • Use Explore for nearby ideas if you do not need one particular business.

Search coverage and ranking are location-dependent, so a missing result is a reason to broaden the query, not proof that the business is closed.

There is no Menu button

  • Confirm that you opened the restaurant’s full place profile rather than a small map preview.
  • Look for a menu link, menu photo, or PDF in the profile’s other information.
  • Search the restaurant’s name and menu together to find the business’s own current page.
  • Call the restaurant when the menu is important and no reliable current copy is available.

Google does not promise that every restaurant or every dish will have a Menu entry.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A dish photo or name looks wrong

Treat it as user-contributed material, check other photos and reviews, and use the available correction or reporting control if the entry is inaccurate, inappropriate, or not served there. For an immediate decision, ask the restaurant rather than waiting for a community correction.

The menu still shows an old price or item

Ask when the restaurant changed its menu and whether the update has had time to appear. Google gives owners a 24–48-hour display estimate for menu changes. During that period, and whenever the information remains inconsistent, rely on the restaurant’s own menu or direct confirmation.

There is no Order Online button

Check whether the restaurant is currently open and whether ordering providers are supported in your country or language. If the button is still absent, Google says no provider is available through Google for that restaurant at that time. Contact the restaurant to ask about alternative ordering methods.

What to remember

Search is the precise route: name the cuisine, category, dish, or area, then add a location. Explore is the discovery route for nearby ideas. In either case, open the restaurant profile and inspect the Menu entry for structured dishes, photos, reviews, or links. Google’s results are shaped by relevance, distance, prominence, and personalization, so position is not a food-quality verdict. Menus and dish contributions can be incomplete or stale; use the restaurant’s current information or direct contact when ingredients, availability, or price matters.
