Start with INFLIBNET’s VIDWAN, verify the person on the institution’s website, then check the institution’s IRINS portal, the researcher’s ORCID or index identifiers, and Shodhganga for theses. Use Shodh-Chakra when your university or institute provides access.
Do not treat one displayed citation total as a universal score. Each service has different coverage, update schedules and record-matching rules. Record the database, profile owner, affiliation, identifier and date checked whenever you quote a publication or citation count.

Which Indian research platform should you use?
Choose the route according to the item you are trying to locate. A journal article, an institutional profile and a doctoral thesis may appear in different systems. The table below gives the practical starting point and the main limitation of each.

These services complement rather than replace one another. An article can be indexed in one database, a thesis in another, and a researcher’s authoritative affiliation on a university laboratory page.

Begin with a precise identity search
Indian names often occur in multiple spellings and transliterations. Searching a name alone can return several researchers, unrelated professionals or papers by a different person with the same initials. Add context before opening any profile.
- Use the full name plus affiliation. Search the name with the university, institute, company laboratory, department or city.
- Add the research field. Terms such as polymer chemistry, embedded systems or public health narrow results more effectively than a surname alone.
- Try name variants. Test initials, expanded middle names, hyphenation and common transliteration differences.
- Find an official institutional page. A staff, laboratory or department page gives you a baseline affiliation and subject area.
- Collect identifiers. Look for ORCID, Scopus Author ID, Web of Science ResearcherID or a researcher-maintained Google Scholar profile.
Keep a short identity record while searching: the person’s name as displayed, current institution, department, research area, city, identifier and any previous organisation. This prevents you from combining publications belonging to two people.
Use VIDWAN as the India-focused starting point
INFLIBNET describes VIDWAN as a profile network for scientists and faculty in Indian academic and research organisations. It is usually the fastest India-specific place to look for an expert profile, research areas and an institutional association. Start at INFLIBNET Centre and follow the current VIDWAN service link.

How to check a VIDWAN result
- Search the scientist’s full name.
- Filter mentally by institution, department, subject and city rather than selecting the first matching name.
- Open the profile and note the displayed affiliation, research interests, publications and identifiers.
- Open the institution’s staff or laboratory page in a separate tab.
- Match at least two independent details, such as department and research topic, before attributing a publication.
VIDWAN is a discovery profile, not proof that every listed paper belongs to the person. INFLIBNET notes that experts can edit their profiles, so an old affiliation or incomplete publication list is possible. Use the institutional page and an identifier to confirm the match.
Check the institution’s IRINS portal
IRINS is designed for academic and research organisations to curate and showcase researcher profiles, scholarly outputs and related information. Read the service overview at About IRINS. If the scientist’s university or institute participates, its IRINS portal may provide a more institution-specific view than a general name search.
What IRINS can add
- A profile tied to the organisation’s own research-information workflow.
- Publication lists assembled from institutional repositories and open or commercial citation databases.
- Links to ORCID, Scopus ID, ResearcherID and Google Scholar ID where the institution has configured them.
- Research areas, co-authors, projects or output categories that help distinguish people with similar names.
How to use an IRINS profile safely
- Find the institution’s IRINS portal through the organisation’s research office or library site.
- Search the scientist and compare the displayed department and employment details with the official institutional page.
- Open individual publication records instead of relying only on the profile’s aggregate number.
- Inspect the source or linked identifier for records that matter to your work.
- Note whether an affiliation is current or historical; a profile can retain earlier organisations.
IRINS can aggregate information from several sources, so its totals are not automatically equivalent to a Scopus, Web of Science or Google Scholar total. Attribute the number to IRINS and record the date you viewed it.

Follow persistent identifiers to the researcher’s other profiles
Identifiers reduce name ambiguity, but they do not guarantee identical records across databases. Use them as links between systems and then inspect the actual publication list.
ORCID
ORCID provides a persistent researcher identifier that can be connected to employment, education and works. IRINS supports ORCID integration or synchronisation when configured by the institution. An ORCID iD helps establish that two records refer to the same person; it is not itself a universal source of citation counts.
Scopus Author ID
A Scopus Author ID can help you locate an author’s record within Scopus. Check the affiliation, subject area, co-authors and individual documents before accepting a match. Access conditions and the available metrics depend on your institution or subscription, so do not assume that every reader can see the same profile.
Web of Science ResearcherID
Web of Science states: A Web of Science ResearcherID is a unique identifier that differentiates researchers in the Web of Science.
The definition appears in its ResearcherID help article, updated July 14, 2026: Web of Science ResearcherID. Use the identifier to open the researcher’s profile in that ecosystem, review claimed records and check the publication list. Web of Science also explains profile functions in Introduction to your Web of Science Researcher Profile and Web of Science Researcher Profiles.
Google Scholar profile
A Google Scholar profile can be useful when the scientist maintains one, particularly for finding versions of papers and an author-curated list. Treat it as a separate source: check the profile owner, affiliation and individual records, and record that the count came from Google Scholar on a specific date. A Scholar total should not be presented as interchangeable with a Scopus or Web of Science total.

When the item is a thesis rather than a journal or conference paper, search Shodhganga. INFLIBNET describes Shodhganga as an open-access repository for electronic theses and dissertations submitted by students and research scholars at Indian universities. The INFLIBNET activities page is available at https://web.inflibnet.ac.in/activities/.

Search method
- Search the author’s full name, then try initials and spelling variants.
- Add the university, department or a distinctive phrase from the research topic.
- Open the repository record and confirm the title, degree, university, year and supervisor.
- Use the downloadable full text or metadata to distinguish a thesis from later journal papers based on the same work.
- Cite the thesis as a thesis or dissertation; do not count it as a journal article merely because a related article exists.
Shodhganga is especially valuable for work that predates a researcher’s current appointment or for subjects with limited journal indexing. Its record should still be matched to the person’s institutional and identifier information.
Use Shodh-Chakra for cross-source literature discovery
Shodh-Chakra is a research workspace associated with INFLIBNET. Its service description says, It helps researcher(s) to find out relevant literature from millions of scholarly articles from Shodhganga, Google Scholar, IRINS, Crossref and other databases.

Use it when your university or research institute has completed the required onboarding. The available sources and functions can depend on that institutional participation. Treat a result as a discovery lead, then open the underlying record and identify whether it came from Shodhganga, an IRINS profile, Crossref or another index.

Before you quote a paper, download a list or report a citation figure, apply the same identity test to every important record.
- Compare names. Check initials, middle names, transliteration and order of surnames.
- Compare affiliations. Match the publication affiliation to the person’s current or historical institutions.
- Compare subject and co-authors. A consistent field and recurring collaborators are useful disambiguators.
- Check dates. A paper published before the person entered the field or after a long career break deserves closer review.
- Use the identifier. Prefer a record linked to the person’s ORCID, Scopus Author ID or ResearcherID when available.
- Inspect versions. A repository manuscript, conference item and journal article may describe the same work; avoid counting all versions as separate publications.
- Check the institution’s page again. Current affiliation can change, while a profile may retain historical organisations.
For a high-stakes report, save the profile URL, article DOI or repository handle, the affiliation evidence and the date checked. This creates an audit trail if a profile changes later.
Compare citation profiles without creating a misleading ranking
Citation totals are source-specific measurements. The systems described here draw on different collections, matching rules and update schedules. A paper missing from one database may be present in another, and duplicate or variant records can affect totals.

Write results precisely: “The Web of Science profile showed X citations on [date]” is defensible; “the scientist has X citations” suggests a universal figure that no single platform establishes. If two profiles disagree, report both with their database names rather than averaging them.
A repeatable workflow for a publication or citation check
- Define the output. Decide whether you need a biography, a complete publication list, a thesis, or a database-specific metric.
- Build the identity record. Record the full name, institution, department, city, field and known identifiers.
- Check VIDWAN. Use the profile to discover the researcher’s areas and likely affiliations.
- Confirm on the institutional site. Use the staff, laboratory or department page as the primary affiliation check.
- Open IRINS. If the organisation participates, compare its profile and publication records.
- Follow identifiers. Check ORCID and the relevant Scopus, Web of Science or Google Scholar profile.
- Search Shodhganga. Add theses and dissertations that are absent from article indexes.
- Use Shodh-Chakra if available. Search across its connected sources, then verify each underlying record.
- Reconcile duplicates. Group preprints, repository copies, conference versions and journal versions before counting works.
- Document the result. Save URLs, database names, identifiers, affiliation evidence and check dates.
Common problems and how to resolve them
Several scientists have the same name
Add institution, city, department, subject and co-author terms. Prefer a record with a matching identifier and confirm it against an official staff page. Do not merge profiles simply because the first and last names match.
The profile lists an old institution
Check the date of each publication and the current institutional page. Report the historical affiliation when it is relevant, but label the person’s current affiliation separately.
A paper is missing from one database
Search the title in the institution’s repository, IRINS, Crossref, Shodhganga and the author’s identifier-linked profiles. Absence from one index does not prove that the work was never published.
The same article appears more than once
Compare title, authors, journal, year, DOI and document type. Keep one canonical journal record and note repository or conference versions separately.
Citation totals do not agree
Check the database name, profile identity, coverage and date. Report the separate figures with those qualifications instead of choosing the largest number.
You cannot open a service
VIDWAN, IRINS, Shodhganga and Shodh-Chakra are INFLIBNET services or projects, but institutional portals and onboarding can differ. Confirm the live portal through the university library or research office. Access to third-party indexes may also depend on institutional arrangements; the service descriptions do not establish one universal access rule for every reader.
How to cite a profile or publication in your own work
For a profile, identify the platform, researcher, profile URL and date accessed. For a publication, use the DOI or repository record as the primary item link and include the author list, title, venue and year. If you report a metric, name the database beside the number and include the check date.
Example wording: “The researcher’s IRINS profile, checked on 16 October 2026, listed the following works; citation counts were checked separately in Web of Science on the same date.” This makes clear that the profile and metric came from different systems.
Access, maintenance and freshness
Profiles are living records. Researchers can change institutions, claim publications or correct name variants. Institutional portals can also change their data sources. Recheck the affiliation and citation figure immediately before submitting a report, grant application or news article.
When a source does not display an update date, do not imply that its count is current to a particular day. Use the date you personally checked it and preserve the original URL. For historical analysis, keep a dated copy of the list or export where the service permits it.
What a dependable result looks like
A dependable identification has three layers: an India-focused or institutional profile, independent affiliation evidence and at least one persistent identifier. A dependable publication list records the source of each item and removes duplicate versions. A dependable citation statement names the database and date instead of presenting a platform-specific total as a universal ranking.
