For a U.S. outbreak update, start with the CDC’s Current Outbreak List, then check your state or local health department for guidance where you live. For vaccine questions, use current information from the agency suited to the question—CDC, FDA, or WHO—and follow a viral claim back to its original notice or evidence. A report of a health problem after vaccination is not, by itself, proof that the vaccine caused it.

Open the linked notice itself rather than relying on a search-result snippet, repost, or screenshot. CDC says its Health Alert Network is its primary method for sharing cleared information about urgent public-health incidents.

- Open the source notice. Confirm it is published by the agency named in the post and follow its links to the underlying update.
- Check the date and status. Note when the notice was updated and whether the investigation is ongoing or closed. Counts and recommendations can change; an older figure is not necessarily current.
- Check the scope. Identify the place covered, the affected group or product, and any stated exposure locations or dates. Do not assume a national notice answers a local question.
- Read how cases are defined. Distinguish confirmed linked cases from suspected cases and from all cases of a disease. If the notice does not specify a category, do not infer one.
- Look for action guidance. Use the notice’s stated instructions and local public-health updates rather than drawing personal conclusions from a case count.
Where to check whether a vaccine claim is true
Match the source to the question. The agencies have complementary roles, so differences between their pages do not automatically mean one is wrong. Compare the vaccine, population, date, geography, and type of evidence each source addresses.

When a claim circulates online, trace it to the original notice, report, or study. Check who issued it, when, what geography and population it covers, whether it links to evidence, and whether it describes something that happened “after” vaccination or establishes that it happened “because of” vaccination. An agency logo or name in a repost is not proof that the agency issued or endorsed the claim.
Does a VAERS report mean the vaccine caused an event?
No. A VAERS report means a health problem was reported after vaccination; it does not establish that vaccination caused it. The FDA explains: “VAERS reports generally cannot be used to determine if a vaccine caused or contributed to an adverse event or illness.” Reports can include events where the reporter is unsure whether there is a connection, and VAERS generally cannot establish how often a vaccine causes an event.

VAERS is a surveillance system: reports can help identify a possible safety signal that merits investigation. A signal is a reason to look further, not a causal finding. CDC and FDA use other systems and studies to evaluate whether a vaccine may have caused an outcome. When reading a safety claim, check whether it cites reports, a signal under investigation, or an assessed finding—and do not treat those as interchangeable.

Check the current FDA recall information and relevant CDC guidance, then confirm that the notice covers the exact vaccine and lot in question. Recall instructions are product- and lot-specific; do not assume that every recall requires revaccination or any other particular action. If the notice does not make the next step clear for your situation, ask a healthcare professional.

What to do when sources appear to conflict
Compare the statements on the same terms before deciding that they disagree:
- Authority and role: Is the source a regulator, a public-health recommendation body, or an international health agency?
- Date and update status: Is one page newer, or is one a live page that has since changed?
- Geography and population: Are the sources addressing the same country, age group, or other population?
- Evidence stage: Is a source describing reports, a preliminary investigation, or a reviewed finding?
- Primary evidence: Does the notice link to the original data or study, and does that evidence support the claim being shared?
