A weekly label such as “Questionable” is not the final inactive decision, and availability can change after the weekly report.
Where to check whether a running back is playing
- Start with the NFL.com injury report. Find the current week and confirm the player’s team. The report lists the club, player, position, injury, practice participation, and game status. Because the page changes during the season, make sure you are looking at the current entry rather than an older week.
- Use a dated fantasy roundup for lineup context. A fantasy article can help explain possible workload changes, replacement options, and the impact on your lineup. Check its week and update time, and compare its injury information with the NFL report. For example, ESPN Fantasy’s Week 1, 2026 roundup provides fantasy context and says Sunday inactive coverage begins around 90 minutes before scheduled kickoffs. It is analysis, not the official status record.
- Make the final check on the NFL inactive report. The inactive list is the game-day public confirmation to consult before deciding whether the player is available for that game. Check around the 90-minute pregame period, then refresh closer to kickoff in case an update appears.
What the injury and practice labels mean
The NFL separates practice participation from game status. The league’s injury-report policy describes practice participation as Did Not Participate, Limited Participation, or Full Participation. These labels describe practice work; they are not the player’s game-status designation and do not, by themselves, confirm that the player will be active.

- Questionable: The policy says it is uncertain whether the player will play. This is not an announcement that the player is active or inactive.
- Doubtful: The player is unlikely to participate, but check the game-day inactive report for the final confirmation.
- Out: The policy defines this as the player will not play.
Do not treat a full practice as a guarantee of active status. Read practice participation and game status as separate pieces of information, then use the inactive report for the game-day decision.
When NFL inactive reports come out
NFL Football Operations says clubs exchange their game-day inactive lists at the 90-minute pregame meeting. ESPN Fantasy describes Sunday inactive updates as beginning around 90 minutes before scheduled kickoffs. Weekly injury reporting is earlier and follows the game schedule. For the 2026–27 season, the NFL’s important dates page lists practice reports due by 4 p.m. New York time, or as soon as possible after practice, on scheduled reporting days. For Sunday games, those days are Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday; the game-status report is due Friday by 4 p.m. New York time or as soon as possible after practice. Other game days have different schedules, so do not apply the Sunday cadence to Thursday, Saturday, or Monday games.
Why you should check again close to kickoff
The Friday report is not necessarily the last word. The NFL policy requires a club to report an injury or other event affecting availability after the Friday update and before the inactive-list meeting to specified media and league contacts. If the running back’s status is important to your lineup, return to the official inactive page during the pregame window and refresh closer to kickoff.
