If anxiety or low mood is lasting, getting worse, difficult to manage, or interfering with work, school, home life, or relationships, contact a qualified health professional rather than trying to diagnose yourself first. A primary-care clinician or GP is a practical starting point. Depending on where you live, you may also be able to self-refer to a public therapy service or use an official treatment directory. If you may hurt yourself, are thinking about suicide, or face immediate danger, use crisis or emergency services now; do not wait for a routine appointment.
This guide explains how to judge urgency, prepare for a conversation, choose a route in the United Kingdom or United States, and understand what may happen next. It is general care-navigation information, not a diagnosis or a substitute for individualized medical advice.

Choose the right level of help
You do not need a confirmed diagnosis before asking for care. Persistent changes in mood, thoughts, body, or behavior deserve attention when they make ordinary responsibilities harder or self-care is no longer enough. Use the following three levels to decide what to do next.
Recommended Free Tools
| Urgency | What it can look like | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Routine support | Symptoms are present but you can remain safe and manage most responsibilities. | Arrange a GP or primary-care appointment, or check whether an eligible local therapy service accepts self-referrals. |
| Prompt professional contact | Anxiety or low mood is difficult to cope with, is worsening, lasts around two weeks or longer, or is disrupting work, school, home, or relationships. | Contact a clinician soon. Tell the service how symptoms affect daily life and ask about the earliest appropriate appointment. |
| Immediate crisis or emergency | Thoughts of suicide, urges to hurt yourself, inability to stay safe, or an immediate medical danger. | Use your country’s crisis or emergency service immediately. In the United States, call, text, or chat 988; call 911 or go to an emergency room for immediate danger or a medical emergency. |
These categories are about safety and functioning, not about labeling yourself. A person can need urgent help even if symptoms have lasted less than two weeks, and someone with longer-lasting symptoms may still be safe while arranging routine care.

Know when persistence warrants a professional conversation
Low mood
NHS guidance on low mood, sadness, and depression (reviewed 29 July 2026) advises contacting a GP when low mood lasts more than two weeks, is difficult to cope with, or personal steps are not helping. The two-week point is a prompt to seek advice, not a rule that you must endure symptoms until that date. Contact a clinician sooner if symptoms are severe, rapidly worsening, or affecting safety.
Anxiety, fear, or panic
NHS guidance on anxiety (reviewed 13 July 2026) recommends contacting a GP when coping is difficult or self-help is not helping. Recurrent worry, panic, avoidance, sleep disruption, or physical symptoms can all be relevant to the conversation. You do not have to decide whether the problem is an anxiety disorder before seeking an assessment.
Changes that interfere with daily life
The US National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) advises considering how symptoms affect daily life. Its 2025 guide says, “If you have had severe symptoms for 2 weeks or more, seek professional help.” The same guide also advises immediate help for suicidal thoughts or urges to hurt yourself, so the quotation should never be interpreted as an instruction to wait two weeks in an unsafe situation.
The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) describes changes in thoughts, mood, or body that last two or more weeks and make it hard to manage work, school, home, or relationships as a sign that it may be time to ask for help. The duration is one signal; severity, safety, and loss of functioning matter at any point.
Prepare what you want to tell a clinician
A short written record can make an appointment more useful, especially when anxiety or low mood makes it hard to remember details. A paper note or phone note is optional; it is not treatment and does not replace an assessment.
- Record the start and pattern. Note when you first noticed the change, whether it is constant or comes in episodes, how often it occurs, and whether it is getting better, worse, or staying the same.
- Describe effects on ordinary activities. Include sleep, appetite, concentration, work or school attendance, household tasks, social contact, and relationships. Concrete examples are more useful than a general statement that you feel “bad.”
- List safety concerns plainly. If you have thoughts of suicide, urges to self-harm, or fear that you may not stay safe, say so directly and at the beginning of the contact. Do not soften the wording to protect the listener.
- Bring relevant health information. List medicines, supplements, recent illnesses, substance use that may affect symptoms, and previous mental-health treatment. A provider may assess whether a physical problem or another health issue could be contributing.
- Write questions. Ask what assessment is being proposed, which treatments are available, how quickly they can start, what follow-up will look like, and what to do if symptoms worsen while you wait.
NIMH’s anxiety guidance notes that symptoms can have different causes and that a provider may check whether an unrelated physical problem is involved. That is one reason an evaluation is more reliable than self-diagnosis from a symptom list.

Find a starting route in the United Kingdom
Ask a GP
A GP can discuss persistent low mood or difficult-to-manage anxiety, consider physical and psychological factors, and help you decide what level of care is appropriate. When booking, you can say that your mental health is affecting daily life and that you need an appointment. You do not have to use a diagnostic term.
Check NHS Talking Therapies
Some adults can refer themselves to NHS Talking Therapies. NHS information says eligibility can include people aged 18 or over, or 16 or over in some areas, and that local arrangements vary. Service names, age rules, and availability can change, so check the current rules for your area rather than assuming that a service is available or that a referral is automatic.
What to include in the request
- How long the anxiety or low mood has been present.
- The specific activities or relationships it is disrupting.
- Whether self-help attempts have helped.
- Any immediate safety concern.
- Preferred contact method, language, accessibility needs, or other practical requirements.
If you are outside the United Kingdom, NHS pathways may not apply. Use your own country’s public health service or an official local care directory.

Primary care
A primary-care clinician can be a first point of contact for anxiety or low mood. Explain the duration, frequency, effect on daily responsibilities, and any safety concern. The clinician can discuss treatment options or refer you to a mental-health professional.
Use official treatment-finding services
SAMHSA identifies FindTreatment.gov and its National Helpline as US routes for treatment-finding and referral information. Availability, costs, insurance participation, provider credentials, and appointment times differ by location, so confirm those details directly with the service and prospective provider.

Ask about practical fit
Before scheduling, ask whether the provider serves your state, accepts your insurance or offers a stated self-pay rate, treats the concerns you described, and provides the type of appointment you need. These checks help you avoid a referral that is geographically or financially unusable.

If you live elsewhere
The NHS pathways and US directories described here are country-specific. Readers in other countries should use their national health service, a local primary-care clinician, or an official government crisis-care page. Crisis numbers, eligibility rules, and emergency procedures vary by country; do not assume that a US number works internationally.
Understand what an assessment may cover
An initial appointment is usually a conversation about symptoms, functioning, health history, and safety. The clinician may ask when the change began, how often it occurs, what makes it better or worse, how you are sleeping and functioning, and whether you have thoughts of suicide or self-harm. Honest answers help the clinician judge urgency; they do not commit you to a particular treatment.
Because anxiety and low mood can have multiple causes, the clinician may review physical health, current medicines, substance use, and other symptoms. Do not stop a prescribed medicine or start a supplement based solely on online advice. Ask the prescriber how any change should be made.

Know the main treatment categories without choosing for yourself
Talking therapy
Therapy is a common treatment option for anxiety and low mood. The form, length, frequency, and delivery method depend on the person’s symptoms, preferences, availability, and clinical assessment. Ask the clinician to explain the proposed approach and how progress will be reviewed.
Medication
Medication is another common option. Whether it is appropriate depends on symptoms, other health conditions, current medicines, side effects, and the clinician’s judgment. Ask about expected benefits, common risks, interactions, how long a trial may take, and what follow-up is planned. Never change a prescribed dose or stop suddenly without medical advice.

Combined or stepped care
Some people receive therapy, medication, or both; others begin with one approach and adjust after review. The available evidence here does not establish one universally preferred treatment. A qualified professional should help match the plan to your circumstances, safety, and preferences.

Official services and directories are useful starting points, but a listing alone is not a guarantee of quality or availability. Before accepting an appointment, verify:
- The provider’s professional credentials and the jurisdiction in which they are allowed to practise.
- Whether they have experience with anxiety, low mood, or the specific problem you described.
- How confidentiality works and when information may be shared for safety.
- The fee, insurance coverage, cancellation policy, and any waiting period.
- How appointments occur, including location, telephone or video options, and accessibility arrangements.
- Who to contact outside appointment hours if symptoms worsen.
If a service cannot meet your needs, ask the GP, primary-care clinician, or directory service for another route. A poor logistical fit is a reason to seek a different service, not evidence that treatment cannot help.
Use self-help as support, not as a substitute for care
Sleep routines, regular meals, movement, time with trusted people, breathing exercises, and reducing alcohol or other substances may support wellbeing. They should not delay professional contact when symptoms are severe, worsening, persistent, or disrupting life. A symptom journal can help you describe patterns at an appointment, but it is optional and cannot assess risk or provide treatment.
If self-help is not helping, tell the clinician exactly what you tried and for how long. NHS guidance specifically lists lack of benefit from personal steps as a reason to seek advice.
Get immediate crisis help in the United States
In the United States, 988 provides call, text, and chat support for mental-health, suicide, and substance-use crises. SAMHSA states that the service is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and that people worried about someone else may also contact it. SAMHSA’s 988 FAQ says, “There is no reason too big or too small to reach out to 988.”
Best Value
If there is immediate danger or a medical emergency, call 911 or go to an emergency room. If you are outside the United States, use your local official crisis or emergency service instead; 988 is not a global number.
What to say during a crisis contact
- State your location if asked.
- Say whether you are thinking about suicide or self-harm, or whether someone else may be in danger.
- Explain whether you have a plan, access to means, or an immediate injury.
- Follow the responder’s instructions and stay connected while arranging in-person help.
Support someone who is struggling
Choose a private moment, describe what you have noticed without judgment, and ask how you can help them contact care. Offer practical assistance such as sitting with them while they call, helping write symptoms down, or accompanying them to an appointment if they agree. Do not promise secrecy if they may be in immediate danger. If safety is urgent, contact the appropriate crisis or emergency service.
You cannot diagnose another person or force a routine treatment decision. You can take statements about suicide or self-harm seriously, remain present while help is arranged, and remove avoidable barriers to contacting professionals.
Common mistakes that delay useful help
Waiting for a perfect label
Services assess symptoms and functioning; you do not need to identify a disorder before making contact.
Treating two weeks as a waiting requirement
NHS, NIMH, and SAMHSA each use a two-week reference in specific guidance, but none makes it a universal requirement to wait. Severe, worsening, or unsafe symptoms require earlier action.
Using a commercial listing without checking fit
Confirm geography, credentials, cost, coverage, availability, and the provider’s experience rather than assuming every listing is suitable.
Assuming one country’s crisis route works everywhere
988 is a US service. Readers elsewhere should use their own official crisis and emergency information.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsStopping after one unsuccessful contact
If a service is full, unaffordable, or not appropriate, ask for another official route. Keep describing the urgency and functional impact so the next service can triage you accurately.
A simple action plan for today
- Decide whether you are safe right now. If not, use crisis or emergency help immediately.
- Write three facts: when symptoms began, how often they occur, and what daily activities they affect.
- Contact a GP or primary-care clinician, or check the applicable official referral route for your country.
- Ask what assessment and treatment options are available, including expected timing and cost.
- Arrange follow-up and ask what to do if symptoms worsen while you wait.
Persistent anxiety or low mood is a valid reason to seek professional support. Starting with an official health service, giving a clear account of the impact, and escalating promptly when safety is at risk gives you the most dependable path to appropriate care.
