How to Find Reliable Information About Asteroids and Planetary Defense

For a current, authoritative answer about an asteroid, start with NASA/JPL’s Center for Near-Earth Object Studies (CNEOS). Use its Sentry system for confirmed near-Earth objects and long-term impact monitoring, and distinguish those results from Scout, which evaluates unconfirmed candidates over shorter time spans. Always record the object’s designation and the date of the assessment: impact probabilities, close-approach dates and even risk-list status can change as astronomers obtain more observations.

Where to check an asteroid’s current status

Search headlines and social-media posts are often out of date by the time you read them. The most dependable starting point is NASA/JPL CNEOS, which publishes computed orbits, close approaches and impact-risk information for near-Earth objects (NEOs). Its Sentry risk table monitors confirmed objects for possible impacts over a typical 100-year search horizon.

For a newly reported object that has not yet been confirmed, consult the Sentry introduction to understand the distinction between Sentry and Scout, then follow the object through the Minor Planet Center’s NEO Confirmation Page. The confirmation page is part of the discovery workflow: observations are collected, reported and checked before an object receives a reliable orbit and permanent designation.

NASA’s Next Asteroid Close Approaches page is useful for upcoming flybys. It is not the same thing as an impact-warning list: a close approach can be millions of miles away and completely harmless. For the broader observing and follow-up program, see NASA’s Near-Earth Object Observations Program.

What counts as a near-Earth object?

NASA describes a near-Earth object as an asteroid or comet whose orbit brings it within 120 million miles (195 million kilometers) of the Sun. That definition concerns orbital location, not a prediction that the object will hit Earth. Many NEOs never come close to our planet.

Sentry, Scout and the Minor Planet Center: different jobs

System or resource What it covers How to use it
Sentry Confirmed near-Earth objects and possible impacts found in long-term orbit calculations, normally over 100 years Check the current risk table, object page, probability, possible dates and Torino or Palermo values
Scout Unconfirmed candidates at an early stage, using short-term preliminary orbit estimates Treat results as provisional until follow-up observations confirm or eliminate the candidate
Minor Planet Center NEO Confirmation Page Newly reported observations awaiting confirmation and designation Use it to follow the discovery and confirmation process, not as a final impact verdict
NASA/JPL Asteroid Watch Upcoming close approaches and public-facing asteroid information Check flyby dates and distances; do not equate a close approach with an impact

The systems are complementary. Scout can flag a possible trajectory while an object is still unconfirmed. Once observations establish a sufficiently reliable orbit and the object is designated, CNEOS can perform the longer-term Sentry analysis. A listing in either context is a calculation based on available observations, not a declaration that an impact will occur.

How to verify a claim step by step

  1. Write down the exact designation. Asteroid names can look similar, and a provisional designation may change after confirmation. Copy the designation exactly as shown in the report.
  2. Record when the claim was made. Include the article date, video date or social-media timestamp. A probability quoted weeks ago may no longer be the current value.
  3. Establish whether the object is confirmed. A preliminary candidate belongs to the Scout and Minor Planet Center workflow. A confirmed near-Earth object is the kind of object Sentry monitors for long-term risk.
  4. Open the object’s CNEOS page. Use Impact Risk: Introduction to understand the terminology, then open the current Sentry record for the designation. Compare the page’s update date with the date in the claim.
  5. Read the orbit and encounter context. Look at the listed possible encounter dates, the range of computed trajectories and the observations used to constrain the orbit. An orbit is an estimate with uncertainty, not a single permanently fixed line through space.
  6. Separate probability from severity. An impact probability says how many currently possible trajectories lead to an impact. It does not by itself state the object’s size, energy or damage area. Check diameter estimates and their uncertainty separately.
  7. Identify the scale. Torino is intended mainly for public communication; Palermo is a technical comparison scale. A number on one scale cannot be interpreted as if it were the other.
  8. Recheck before sharing. CNEOS updates calculations as new astrometric measurements arrive. Save the page date and URL with any probability or close-approach date you quote.

What an impact-risk listing actually means

An impact-risk entry means that, using the observations available at that time, at least one mathematically possible future trajectory intersects Earth. The probability reflects the fraction of the allowed orbit solutions that produce an impact under the model; it is not a countdown and not a statement that an impact is certain.

Early in an object’s observation history, the allowed orbit can be broad. A small error in position or velocity, propagated over years, can produce a wide corridor of possible future locations. Some of those paths may cross Earth even when most do not. This is why a newly discovered object can briefly appear more alarming than it later becomes.

As additional observations narrow the orbit, the possible trajectories usually contract. If the trajectories that intersect Earth are eliminated, the object can disappear from Sentry. CNEOS describes removal from the list as a normal outcome of improved measurements; it does not mean the earlier calculation was fraudulent or that the system “missed” a guaranteed impact.

Probability is not certainty

Suppose a page reports a one-in-a-million impact probability. That does not mean the object has already been assigned a destination and will probably hit. It means the current uncertainty region contains a very small set of impact solutions. The value can rise, fall or reach zero when new measurements change the estimated orbit.

Risk listing is not a damage forecast

Impact probability and consequence are separate questions. Diameter estimates can be approximate, especially when an object’s albedo (reflectivity) is unknown. A larger object at a very low probability and a smaller object at a higher probability require different kinds of analysis. Do not infer an impact’s energy, location or casualties from a risk-table percentage alone.

Why an asteroid’s impact probability changes

More observations constrain the orbit

Discovery surveys provide a short sequence of positions against the background stars. Follow-up observatories extend that arc and reduce uncertainty in the object’s position and motion. Because orbital calculations project those measurements years or decades into the future, even a small improvement in the initial data can remove large groups of possible trajectories.

Long time horizons magnify small errors

Sentry searches for impacts over approximately 100 years. A tiny uncertainty in today’s velocity can become a substantial positional difference after many solar orbits. A later observation can therefore change the calculated encounter geometry without any physical change to the asteroid itself.

New physical information can alter the model

Orbit solutions may incorporate additional observations and refined calculations. Non-gravitational effects, such as subtle forces caused by uneven heating and thermal emission, can matter for some objects over long periods. The relevant question is whether the current CNEOS page includes a newer solution, not whether an older headline once used a different number.

Object identity and confirmation can change

A preliminary candidate may be linked to an object that is later confirmed, merged with earlier observations or removed when the observations cannot be matched. Scout’s short-term result should not be quoted as though it were a settled Sentry assessment.

How NASA and astronomers build the warning chain

NASA describes a sequence that starts with survey telescopes finding moving points of light. Observatories report the measured positions to the Minor Planet Center, which distributes the observations and coordinates confirmation. Follow-up observers collect additional positions, and CNEOS computes the orbit and evaluates close approaches and possible impacts.

NASA’s “How NASA Science Data Defends Earth from Asteroids” (April 10, 2025) explains how these data streams support planetary defense. NASA’s Planetary Defense Coordination Office also coordinates with the International Asteroid Warning Network. The process is international: one survey’s discovery becomes more useful when observatories in different locations and time zones extend the observing arc.

For a technical description of CNEOS and its role, see the Center for Near-Earth Object Studies. NASA’s explanation is consistent with the practical rule for readers: trust a dated, current calculation built from many observations more than an undated statement copied from an earlier report.

Understanding Torino and Palermo scales

The Torino Scale is designed for public communication. It combines the likelihood of an impact with the object’s estimated energy and uses an integer scale from 0 to 10. A Torino value should be read with the object’s encounter date and the current assessment; it is not a permanent label.

The Palermo Technical Impact Hazard Scale is intended for specialists comparing an object’s calculated risk with the background probability of impacts from objects of similar size. Palermo values can be negative even when a nonzero impact solution exists, because the calculated risk may be below the expected background level. They are not grades from “safe” to “dangerous” for casual use.

CNEOS explains both measures through its Sentry risk pages. If a report shows a scale value without naming the scale, check the original table before interpreting it. Neither scale replaces the underlying probability, date, orbit uncertainty and size estimate.

A dated example: asteroid 2024 YR4

NASA Science reported that asteroid 2024 YR4 reached a peak calculated impact probability above 3% on February 18, 2025. That figure belongs to that dated assessment and must not be presented as the asteroid’s current risk. The example illustrates why a probability needs a date and source: later observations can materially change the result.

When you encounter a new article about 2024 YR4 or any other object, open the current CNEOS record rather than repeating the February 18, 2025 number. Compare the object designation, the latest update date, the possible encounter date and the current probability. A historical maximum is useful for explaining how risk estimates evolve, but it is not a live warning.

Common mistakes when reading asteroid news

  • Using an undated screenshot. A screenshot cannot show whether observations have since changed the orbit. Find the live CNEOS page and its update date.
  • Confusing a close approach with a collision. “Close” is an astronomical measurement relative to Earth, not a synonym for impact. Use the listed miss distance and date.
  • Treating a preliminary candidate as confirmed. Scout and the Minor Planet Center confirmation workflow cover early reports. Wait for confirmation and a current Sentry assessment.
  • Reading a percentage as a certainty. A probability describes current orbit uncertainty. It is not a prediction that the object has chosen one path.
  • Ignoring the time horizon. A short-term Scout estimate and a century-scale Sentry search answer different questions.
  • Comparing Torino and Palermo values directly. The scales have different purposes and reference frameworks.
  • Assuming diameter is exact. Unknown albedo can make a brightness-based size estimate uncertain.
  • Relying on a single dramatic headline. Check the underlying NASA or CNEOS record, then look for the observation date and explanation of what changed.

A practical checklist for sharing a risk claim

Before you repost or write about an asteroid, capture the following details:

  • Exact designation, including any provisional prefix.
  • Whether the object is confirmed or still a candidate.
  • Current CNEOS page URL and the page’s update date.
  • Impact probability and the possible encounter date or date range.
  • Search horizon: short-term preliminary analysis or long-term Sentry monitoring.
  • Diameter estimate and the stated uncertainty or albedo limitation.
  • Whether the displayed communication metric is Torino or Palermo.
  • The observation context: discovery arc, follow-up measurements and any newly added data.

Include those qualifiers in the same sentence as the number. “CNEOS currently lists a probability of X” is more useful than “NASA says it will hit,” because it preserves the distinction between a model result and a certainty.

What reliable planetary-defense information can and cannot tell you

It can tell you

  • Whether an object is in the confirmed NEO catalog or remains an unconfirmed candidate.
  • Which future dates have nonzero impact solutions under the current orbit estimate.
  • How the current probability compares with earlier dated assessments.
  • How close a non-impacting flyby is expected to be.
  • Which public or technical risk scale is being displayed.

It cannot tell you from one number alone

  • The exact impact point, because that requires a much narrower orbit and additional physical modeling.
  • The final crater size or damage area, because those depend on size, composition, speed, angle and location.
  • That an earlier warning was false simply because the object left the risk list; removing possibilities through better observations is the intended outcome.
  • That every newly discovered object is dangerous; discovery means an orbit is being measured, not that a collision is expected.

Why official, dated pages matter

Asteroids move continuously, and their predicted positions are recalculated as measurements arrive. NASA’s 2021 explanation of the next-generation monitoring system notes that asteroids follow knowable physical orbits, while the measurements used to estimate those orbits still have uncertainty. That combination—predictable physics and imperfect observations—is why official pages publish changing values rather than one irrevocable answer.

Javier Roa Vicens, who led development of Sentry-II while working as a JPL navigation engineer, described the original system in NASA’s December 6, 2021 article: “The first version of Sentry was a very capable system that was in operation for almost 20 years.” The continued value of the system is not that it never changes its result; it is that it recalculates the result as the evidence improves.

For a current claim, use the live CNEOS record, retain the date and explain whether the object is confirmed. That habit gives readers a useful answer even when the number changes later.
