How to Find Reliable Hurricane Forecasts, Watches, and Evacuation Orders

For a U.S. hurricane, use the National Hurricane Center (NHC) for the official tropical-cyclone forecast and hurricane watches or warnings, your local National Weather Service (NWS) forecast office for expected hazards where you live, and your local emergency-management authority for evacuation zones, routes, and orders. Keep more than one alert channel active and recheck official updates because a storm’s track, intensity, hazards, and local instructions can change.

Use the source that has authority over the decision

No single map or app answers every hurricane question. The reliable approach is to match the decision you need to the agency responsible for it.

What you need to know Primary source What it provides
Where the tropical cyclone is headed and whether a hurricane watch or warning is in effect National Hurricane Center Official storm position, forecast track, intensity outlook, and hurricane watches and warnings
What your community may experience Your local National Weather Service forecast office Local expectations for wind, flooding, storm surge, rainfall, tornadoes, surf, and inland effects
Whether and where to leave Your local government or emergency-management authority Evacuation zones, routes, shelters, transportation information, and evacuation orders
How to receive urgent alerts when you are not watching a screen Wireless Emergency Alerts, NOAA Weather Radio, and trusted local broadcast sources Additional warnings and updates through mobile, radio, and broadcast channels

Start with the NHC storm advisory rather than a reposted social-media graphic. Then read the forecast discussion and local NWS information for the places that matter to you. Evacuation decisions belong to local officials; a national hurricane map cannot tell you which zone or road applies to your address.

How to check an official hurricane forecast

  1. Identify the active system. Use the current NHC advisory to confirm the storm’s name or designation, location, movement, intensity, and the time of the update. An old screenshot can remain online after the forecast has changed.
  2. Read the hazard products, not only the track graphic. Look for hurricane watches and warnings, storm-surge information, rainfall or flooding products, and other hazards mentioned in the advisory. A track line is only one part of the forecast.
  3. Check your local NWS forecast office. Search for the office serving your county or parish and read its forecast and briefing materials. Local offices translate the national forecast into expected conditions, timing, uncertainty, and inland impacts.
  4. Confirm the update time. Forecasts are time-stamped. Compare the time with the current date and with the next scheduled advisory. During a rapidly changing storm, a forecast that was accurate several hours ago may no longer describe the risk.
  5. Follow the instructions attached to each hazard. Wind, storm surge, inland flooding, tornadoes, and dangerous surf can have different timing and protective actions. Do not treat every alert as interchangeable.

Forecast uncertainty is normal, especially several days before landfall. Use the newest official information and prepare for the range of conditions described by NHC and your local NWS office rather than waiting for the center line to become precise.

Record the details that matter

When you check an advisory, note the storm name or designation, the publication time, the hazards listed, and the area covered. Save the direct page for the NHC advisory and your local NWS office instead of saving only an image. If family members are monitoring from different places, sharing the official link and update time prevents everyone from comparing different forecast cycles.

Forecast products may use different update schedules. A local briefing can add detail about rainfall or roads even when the national track graphic looks nearly unchanged. Conversely, a change in the center forecast does not automatically mean every local hazard changes by the same amount. Compare the new wording and timing for each hazard.

Hurricane watch versus hurricane warning

The words “watch” and “warning” indicate different urgency. Their meaning also depends on the particular hazard named in the alert.

Alert Meaning What to do
Watch The specified hazardous conditions are possible in the watch area. Use the time to finish preparations, confirm communications, review your evacuation plan, and monitor official updates.
Warning The specified hazardous conditions are expected or are occurring. Take the protective action in the alert and local instructions. If local officials order an evacuation, leave promptly by the designated route.

A hurricane watch or warning does not describe every threat from the storm. For example, a wind warning does not by itself explain the timing of storm surge or inland flooding. Read the hazard name, affected area, timing, and instructions in the complete alert.

A watch is not a prediction that the strongest conditions will occur at every address inside its boundary. It is a preparation signal. A warning is the point at which the specified hazard is expected or already occurring, so delaying action to seek a more dramatic visual confirmation can reduce the time available to travel or shelter.

What the forecast cone does—and does not—show

The NHC forecast cone represents the probable path of the storm’s center. It is not a picture of the storm’s size, the area that will receive dangerous weather, or a safety boundary.

  • Hurricane-force winds, tropical-storm-force winds, rain, tornadoes, storm surge, and dangerous surf can extend far outside the cone.
  • Inland communities can face life-threatening flooding and damaging wind even when the center remains offshore.
  • A location outside the cone is not automatically safe, and a location inside the cone is not guaranteed to experience the strongest conditions.
  • The cone does not show how far storm surge or rainfall will reach. Use the relevant hazard products and local NWS forecasts for those questions.

According to National Weather Service guidance, the storm center has historically remained within the forecast cone roughly two-thirds of the time. That statistic describes center-track performance; it does not mean that all hazards stay inside the cone or that the remaining one-third represents a harmless miss.

Do not compare the cone directly with an impact map as though one were a more detailed version of the other. The cone answers a narrow track question. Surge, wind-field, rainfall, tornado, surf, and flooding products answer different questions and can cover areas of very different size.

Find local impacts beyond the center track

Your local NWS forecast office is the place to understand how a national forecast translates to your area. Read its updates for the timing and severity of the hazards that matter locally.

Wind

Wind damage depends on the storm’s size, intensity, forward speed, terrain, building exposure, and how long strong winds persist. Local forecasts can identify the expected onset, gust potential, and whether conditions may continue after the center passes.

Storm surge and coastal flooding

Storm surge is seawater pushed onto normally dry land by the storm’s winds and pressure. It can be highly local, varying with coastline shape, tide, bays, rivers, and the storm’s angle of approach. Use local surge products and evacuation instructions rather than estimating risk from the cone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Rainfall and inland flooding

Heavy rain can cause flash flooding, river flooding, and urban drainage problems far inland and after the storm’s strongest winds have moved away. Follow local flood warnings and never drive through water when an official alert or road closure says not to.

Tornadoes, surf, and rip currents

Hurricanes and tropical storms can produce tornadoes, dangerous surf, and rip currents outside the area experiencing the strongest wind. Beach and coastal advisories may remain important even when the center is distant.

National Weather Service Weather-Ready Nation material reports that nearly 90% of hurricane-related deaths involve water hazards, including storm surge, inland flooding, rip currents, and rough surf. Treat water-related warnings as life-safety instructions, not secondary details.

How to find your evacuation zone and order

Evacuation information is jurisdiction-specific. The correct zone name, route, shelter list, and alert channel depend on your city, county, parish, or state, so identify them before a storm threatens.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Locate the official emergency-management page for your address. Use your local government’s website or emergency-management office, not an unlabeled map copied elsewhere.
  2. Record your evacuation zone. Save the zone designation and the official explanation of which hazards trigger evacuation. Some jurisdictions use letters, numbers, colors, or different systems for coastal and inland areas.
  3. Map at least one official route and a backup. Learn the roads designated by local authorities and note that routes can change because of flooding, congestion, or closures. Do not invent a shortcut through an evacuation area.
  4. Decide where you will go. Identify a safe destination outside the evacuation area, such as relatives, friends, or an officially listed shelter. Confirm whether it accepts pets, accessibility equipment, and medical needs.
  5. Sign up for local alerts. Emergency-management text, email, phone, or app alerts may carry the order that applies to your zone. Keep the local channel available even when national forecasts are calm.
  6. Act when an order is issued. Follow the order’s timing and route instructions promptly. Waiting for a second source to repeat the order can put you on the road after conditions deteriorate.

If you are unsure whether an order applies to your address, contact the local emergency-management authority through its official information channel. National agencies can describe the storm, but they do not issue every local evacuation order.

Keep a written or offline record of your zone, destination, route, and a local contact number. Internet pages may be difficult to load during an outage, and a route that was open during planning can close after flooding or debris. Recheck the local authority’s latest instruction immediately before leaving.

Build a warning system that does not depend on one device

Power failures, overloaded networks, dead batteries, and poor cellular coverage can interrupt a single alert method. Use several independent channels.

  • Wireless Emergency Alerts: Enable emergency alerts in your phone’s settings. These are designed for urgent notices delivered through participating wireless networks.
  • NOAA Weather Radio: A receiver can provide continuous weather information and warnings when internet service is unavailable. Keep spare batteries or another backup power source. It supplements, rather than replaces, current NHC forecasts and local evacuation orders.
  • Official NHC and local NWS updates: Check the current advisory and local forecast products directly. Do not rely on an old screenshot, an unattributed map, or a post that does not show its update time.
  • Trusted local broadcast sources: Local radio or television can relay local road, shelter, and government information, particularly during outages.
  • Human backup: Ask a nearby relative, neighbor, or caregiver to monitor alerts with you if you may have difficulty receiving or acting on them.

Test the setup before hurricane season: turn on alerts, verify that notification volume is audible, check radio batteries, and write down local emergency contacts and your evacuation destination.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A generic NOAA Weather Radio receiver is an optional preparedness item, not a replacement for official web updates or local orders. No particular brand or model is required. Choose a way to receive alerts that remains usable for your household, including for people who are asleep, have hearing or vision limitations, or may lose access to a phone.

What to do as a storm approaches

Several days before possible impacts

  • Read the current NHC advisory and identify which hazards could affect your area.
  • Check your local NWS forecast office for timing, rainfall, wind, surge, and inland impacts.
  • Review your evacuation zone, destination, route, transportation, and pet or medical arrangements.
  • Charge phones, backup batteries, radios, medical devices, and other essential equipment.
  • Secure outdoor items and complete preparations while conditions are safe; do not wait for a warning if local officials advise earlier action.

When a watch is issued

  • Finish preparations that require travel or outdoor work.
  • Recheck local emergency-management information for evacuation-zone instructions.
  • Monitor the next official advisory and keep alerts enabled.
  • Be ready to leave if an order is issued or if your household cannot safely shelter in place.

When a warning or evacuation order is issued

  • Follow the specific protective action for the hazard named in the warning.
  • Leave promptly if local officials order your zone to evacuate, using the designated route.
  • Move to higher, safer ground when instructed for flooding or surge; never shelter in a vehicle or building location that officials identify as unsafe.
  • Keep monitoring official updates after leaving because routes, shelter availability, and hazards can change.

Common mistakes that make hurricane information unreliable

Using the cone as a personal impact map

The cone is a center-track tool. Replacing it with local hazard forecasts prevents the false assumption that outside-the-cone areas are safe.

Waiting for a warning before preparing

A watch exists to provide preparation time. Supplies, transportation, medications, pets, and evacuation destinations are harder to arrange once a warning, road congestion, or deteriorating weather begins.

Following a repost without checking its age

Always look for the issuing agency and update time. A copied map can omit a newer advisory, changed warning area, or revised local instruction.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Assuming one agency handles everything

NHC forecasts the tropical cyclone and issues hurricane watches and warnings; local NWS offices explain impacts; local emergency managers issue evacuation instructions. Using the wrong source can leave a crucial question unanswered.

Ignoring water because the wind forecast looks modest

Storm surge, rainfall flooding, rip currents, and rough surf can be deadly even when wind is not the headline hazard. Read every applicable water-related product.

Driving around barricades or through floodwater

Road closures and route changes are safety controls. Follow official detours and never treat a familiar road as safe once flooding begins.

For readers outside the United States

This guide uses U.S. agencies and terminology. If you live elsewhere, substitute your national meteorological service for the NHC, your regional forecast office for the local NWS office, and your national, provincial, or municipal civil-protection authority for evacuation zones and orders. The same principles still apply: use the agency responsible for the forecast, the authority responsible for local impacts, and the government that can legally order an evacuation.

A compact reliability checklist

  • Is the information from the official hurricane center, your local forecast office, or your local emergency-management authority?
  • Does it show a current update time and the specific hazard involved?
  • Are you reading local impact information in addition to the center-track cone?
  • Are Wireless Emergency Alerts, a backup radio or broadcast source, and official online updates available?
  • Do you know your evacuation zone, destination, route, and local alert channel?
  • If an order is issued, can you leave promptly without waiting for the storm to become visually obvious?

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I find a reliable hurricane forecast?

Use the current National Hurricane Center advisory for the official tropical-cyclone position, track, intensity outlook, and hurricane watches or warnings. Then check the National Weather Service forecast office serving your location for timing and local hazards. Verify the publication time and avoid relying on reposted graphics or screenshots.

What is the difference between a hurricane watch and a warning?

A watch means the specified hazardous conditions are possible in the watch area, so use the time to prepare and monitor updates. A warning means those conditions are expected or occurring; follow the instructions for that hazard and any local evacuation order promptly.

Does the hurricane forecast cone show where impacts will happen?

No. The cone shows the probable path of the storm’s center. It does not show storm size, wind, rain, surge, tornadoes, surf, or flooding, and dangerous impacts can occur well outside it and inland. Use local NWS hazard forecasts and official impact products.

Where do I find my evacuation order?

Check your city, county, parish, or state emergency-management authority for the official zone map, routes, shelters, and alerts. Evacuation decisions are local, so the NHC or a national map cannot determine whether an order applies to your address. Follow the local order and designated route promptly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I buy a NOAA Weather Radio?

A generic NOAA Weather Radio receiver is an optional way to receive continuous storm information and warnings, especially when internet service is unavailable. Keep backup power and use it alongside current NHC forecasts, local NWS updates, Wireless Emergency Alerts, and local emergency-management instructions. No specific model or brand is required.

How often should I check hurricane information?

Check the newest official advisory and your local NWS and emergency-management updates, paying attention to each product’s update time and the next scheduled advisory. Forecasts, hazard areas, roads, shelters, and evacuation instructions can change as the storm evolves, so do not treat an old forecast as current.

What if I live outside the United States?

Use your national meteorological service for the official cyclone forecast, your regional forecast office for local impacts, and your national or local civil-protection authority for evacuation zones and orders. The same authority-and-purpose distinctions apply even though agency names and alert terms differ.

The Bottom Line

Trust the National Hurricane Center for the storm forecast, your local NWS office for impacts, and local emergency management for evacuation orders. Read hazards beyond the cone, keep multiple alert channels active, and leave promptly when officials direct your zone to evacuate.
