How to Find Reliable Greenland Precipitation and Climate Data for a Research Project

There is no single, complete Greenland precipitation dataset. Use Danish Meteorological Institute (DMI) stationValue observations for quality-controlled measurements at coastal and settlement stations, PROMICE/GC-Net automatic weather-station data from GEUS for the ice sheet, and a documented model or reanalysis when you need a spatially continuous field. The correct choice depends on your location, period, time resolution and whether you need gauge precipitation, snowfall or a model estimate.

Build validation into the design. Greenland stations are sparse, gaps are not generally filled by interpolation, and precipitation varies over distances smaller than a model grid. Preserve the source version, station or grid cell, units, quality flags, missing-data treatment and access date in your project record.

Which Greenland dataset fits your research question?

Start by defining the measurement target rather than searching for a file by name. A settlement climatology, an ice-sheet surface-energy study and a Greenland-wide precipitation map require different evidence. The table below matches common questions to the most defensible starting point.

Research need Best starting source What you receive Important limitations
Coastal town or long station record DMI stationValue Daily, monthly or yearly station values where a station and parameter support them Each station has its own start and end dates; missing observations can remain after erroneous values are removed
Ice-sheet surface climate GEUS PROMICE/GC-Net catalog Automatic weather-station files in NetCDF and CSV, with Level 2 station products and Level 3 site products Sensor coverage, variables and known problems differ by site and year; inspect metadata and the quality-issue log
Long daily precipitation history DMI historical collection Daily accumulated precipitation in millimetres for Ilulissat (1873–1991) and Tasiilaq (1897–2020), among other component series The daily records were visually checked and corrected but were not tested for homogeneity
Spatially continuous precipitation DMI Greenland ERA5_HIRHAM5 directory Daily and monthly-sum precipitation NetCDF files for 1960–2023 This is an evaluation product based on ECMWF ERA5 and DMI-HIRHAM5; verify grid, units, calendar and interpretation in each file’s metadata
Model or reanalysis evaluation Compare the gridded product with nearby DMI or PROMICE observations Site-specific error and correlation estimates Published ASRv1 comparisons found correlations from 0.37 to 0.86, so one site cannot establish Greenland-wide accuracy

Use more than one source when the question spans environments. For example, a coastal gauge can anchor a nearby model cell, while an ice-sheet AWS can test whether the same product behaves plausibly at elevation. Keep the observations and model estimates labelled as different measurement types rather than merging them into one unqualified series.

How to obtain and interpret DMI station observations

What stationValue contains

DMI’s climate-data service is the primary route to quality-controlled meteorological observations at Greenland stations. Depending on the station and parameter, you may find daily, monthly and yearly values. The service documentation describes Greenland and Faroe Islands station availability from 1953, but an individual series exists only between that station’s own start and termination dates. Check the station history and parameter availability before designing a period-of-record analysis.

DMI’s documentation lists mean temperature and accumulated precipitation from 1991 and other parameters from 2011 on its climate-data page. Those dates describe the service’s listed availability, not a guarantee that every station has a continuous record from those years. A station may have an earlier or later start, interruptions, or a parameter that was never observed there.

Why missing values are meaningful

Greenland quality control is not the same as the Danish workflow. DMI says Greenland observations are manually checked monthly and that erroneous values are removed; gaps can remain because values are not interpolated from neighbouring stations. In Denmark, some procedures interpolate or replace gaps and errors, so do not apply Danish assumptions to a Greenland series. Treat a missing value as missing unless you have a documented, separate infilling method.

Location Documented daily period Variable Use with caution
Ilulissat 1873–1991 Daily accumulated precipitation (mm) Daily observations and blended series were not tested for homogeneity
Tasiilaq 1897–2020 Daily accumulated precipitation (mm) Daily observations and blended series were not tested for homogeneity

The report describes four component station series that can be combined into the longer Ilulissat and Tasiilaq records. Missing daily observations are represented as null in the described data. DMI states explicitly: “No DMI testing for homogeneity has been performed on these daily observations.” Therefore, a long record is not automatically a homogeneous climate normal. If you study trends, test for station moves, instrument changes, observation-practice changes and break points yourself, and report the result as a potentially inhomogeneous series unless your analysis demonstrates otherwise.

A practical station-data checklist

  • Confirm the exact station identifier, coordinates, elevation and operating dates.
  • Confirm that the parameter is accumulated precipitation, not snowfall, snow-water equivalent or a derived amount.
  • Record whether the download is daily, monthly or yearly and how the aggregation interval is defined.
  • Map nulls and other missing-value codes before calculating totals or averages.
  • Keep the download date and the DMI documentation version with your analysis.

When PROMICE/GC-Net is the right source

Coverage and file formats

For measurements on and around the ice sheet, use the PROMICE/GC-Net automatic weather-station catalog maintained through GEUS. The catalog states that data are updated hourly from near-real-time station transmissions and are provided in NetCDF and CSV formats. Its coverage description lists 40 sites on or around the ice sheet plus 11 partner sites. A 2026 PROMICE|GC-Net data paper describes an integrated product with 52 active and historical AWS sites as of late 2025. These counts use different coverage definitions and dates; cite the product version and definition rather than presenting one number as a permanent network size.

Choose Level 2 or Level 3 deliberately

Level 2 files are station products. GEUS describes unit conversions, calibrations, manual flagging or fixing and instrument corrections in this level. They are appropriate when you need the behaviour of a particular station or sensor and want to inspect station-specific flags.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Level 3 files are site products. They merge redundant stations and include derived variables, making them useful for a site-level climate record rather than a single instrument stream. Aggregation can simplify analysis, but it can also hide which sensor supplied a value. For publication, retain the underlying station metadata and explain why the site-level product is appropriate.

Does PROMICE measure precipitation?

Do not assume every PROMICE or GC-Net AWS provides a directly measured precipitation gauge. Automatic weather stations commonly focus on variables such as air temperature, wind, radiation, pressure and surface height; the available variable set differs by site and period. Inspect the file’s variable names, units and metadata. If precipitation is absent, use the AWS for validation of other climate variables or for site context, and obtain precipitation from DMI or a model product instead. A variable labelled snowfall, accumulation or precipitation is not interchangeable without checking its definition and measurement method.

Metadata and known issues

Before using a particular sensor or year, inspect station or site coordinates, elevation, instrument history, processing level and the logged data-quality issues. The GEUS catalog links the relevant citation information; for a paper or report, cite the DOI shown through GEUS Dataverse, along with the product version and access date. An hourly near-real-time update does not mean that every historical value has the same latency, calibration status or completeness.

Using gridded precipitation and reanalysis

What is available for Greenland

DMI does not provide the Danish-style interpolated station grids for Greenland. Its documentation explains that an interpolation algorithm is not applied because of Greenland’s large area, complex topography and low station density. That limitation concerns station-derived grid products; it does not mean that no gridded estimate exists.

  • Identify the precipitation variable and its units. Model products may store rates, accumulations or water-equivalent amounts that require conversion.
  • Check the grid projection, cell size, coordinate order and land/ice mask.
  • Check the calendar, timestamp convention and exact first and last time step.
  • Record the file version or directory date and distinguish daily fields from monthly sums.

Never describe a grid-cell value as a gauge observation. It represents an area and a model formulation, while a gauge represents a point affected by wind, exposure and instrument siting.

How reliable is ERA5 precipitation over Greenland?

Reliability is location- and season-dependent. A published comparison of ASRv1 monthly precipitation with DMI station and Summit POSS observations found correlations between 0.37 and 0.86 across the compared sites. The authors also cautioned that precipitation varies at scales smaller than a model grid. Those results do not provide a single Greenland-wide error bar for ERA5, HIRHAM5 or any other product. They show why you should validate the exact product, period and location you use.

For validation, extract the model cell containing the station and, as a sensitivity check, nearby cells or an area average. Align the model’s accumulation interval with the observation interval, convert units before computing statistics, and document whether you compare raw totals, anomalies or seasonal means. Use metrics suited to intermittent precipitation, such as bias, mean absolute error, correlation and event-detection measures, rather than correlation alone.

A reproducible workflow for a Greenland precipitation project

  1. Define the target. Write down the region (coast, settlement, margin, interior or Greenland-wide), study period, temporal resolution and variable. State whether you need gauge precipitation, snowfall, accumulation or a model estimate.
  2. Screen DMI station availability. Use the DMI climate-data documentation to identify stations, start and end dates, parameters and time resolutions. Do not assume that a nearby station has the required variable or an unbroken record.
  3. Download and inventory the station series. Preserve the original files. Create a table containing station ID, coordinates, elevation, variable, units, interval, first and last timestamp, null count and any quality flags. Keep missing values as null until your method specifies otherwise.
  4. Check historical documentation. If you use the Ilulissat or Tasiilaq long records, read the DMI historical report, record the component series and state that homogeneity testing was not performed by DMI.
  5. Search ice-sheet AWS data when appropriate. Use the GEUS catalog and select Level 2 station files or Level 3 site files according to your analysis. Download metadata, inspect the quality-issue database and record the DOI, version and access date.
  6. Inspect a continuous field. If station coverage cannot answer the spatial question, obtain the relevant DMI ERA5_HIRHAM5 daily or monthly NetCDF file. Verify units, grid, calendar, timestamps and product interpretation from its metadata.
  7. Validate locally. Match model cells to observations near the study location and period. Quantify bias and missingness, test alternative cells or spatial averages, and explain point-to-grid representativeness in the methods.
  8. Freeze the provenance record. Archive URLs, filenames, DOI, product version, station or grid-cell coordinates, processing scripts, transformations, quality flags and access date. This makes a later re-download auditable if a near-real-time product is revised.

Quality, comparability and interpretation checks

Accumulated precipitation is not automatically snowfall

DMI station precipitation is generally an accumulated amount in millimetres, equivalent to liquid-water depth. A model’s total precipitation may include rain, snow and mixed-phase precipitation. Snowfall, snow-water equivalent and surface accumulation involve additional definitions and processes. Name the variable exactly as supplied and explain any conversion or partitioning.

Point observations versus grid cells

A gauge samples one exposure; a model cell averages an area that can include steep elevation gradients, coastline and ice. At Summit or a high-elevation AWS, the nearest cell may have a different surface type or altitude. Compare coordinates and elevation, not just the nearest index, and include a representativeness limitation when interpreting differences.

Time aggregation and missingness

Daily totals can use different local or UTC day boundaries. Monthly sums can be incomplete if days are missing. Before aggregating, count valid intervals, identify whether a total is flagged as estimated, and set a minimum-completeness rule. Do not turn a month with several null days into a full-month total without stating the treatment.

Homogeneity and station changes

The long Ilulissat and Tasiilaq records are valuable for historical context but were not tested for homogeneity by DMI. AWS records can also contain sensor replacements, relocations, calibration changes and periods of icing. Use metadata and quality flags to identify discontinuities; a statistical trend is not automatically a climate trend.

Common failure modes and how to fix them

  • Looking for a single Greenland-wide gauge dataset: There is none with uniform coverage. Combine station, AWS and model sources according to geography and document the boundaries between them.
  • Applying a Danish interpolation assumption: Greenland gaps may remain after quality control. Analyse missingness explicitly instead of expecting a filled grid or infilled station series.
  • Calling ERA5 or HIRHAM5 “observed precipitation”: Label it as model or reanalysis output and validate against nearby observations.
  • Quoting an AWS site count without a date or definition: State whether you mean the GEUS catalog’s 40 ice-sheet sites plus 11 partners or the 52 active and historical sites described by the 2026 integrated data paper as of late 2025.
  • Mixing Level 2 and Level 3 without explanation: Level 2 is station-focused and processed; Level 3 merges redundant stations and derives site variables. Keep the level in your dataset name and methods.
  • Ignoring nulls in historical files: Preserve nulls, report completeness and avoid silently replacing them with zero. Zero precipitation and no observation are different facts.
  • Using a long series as a homogeneous normal: The DMI historical report’s daily series were not homogeneity-tested. Perform and report your own checks before trend or climatology claims.
  • Assuming a precipitation variable exists at every AWS: Check each file’s variables and units. PROMICE/GC-Net is not a guarantee of a precipitation gauge at every site.

What to report in a paper or data release

A reader should be able to reconstruct exactly what you downloaded and how you interpreted it. Include:

  • Organization, dataset name, product or processing level, version and DOI where supplied.
  • Station or site identifier, coordinates, elevation and, for a grid, projection, cell size and selected cell or area.
  • Variable name, physical meaning, units, accumulation interval and timestamp convention.
  • Start and end dates, temporal aggregation and completeness thresholds.
  • Quality-control method, flags retained, known sensor or station changes and homogeneity testing.
  • Missing-data codes, null handling, infilling or bias correction, including the dates affected.
  • Validation stations, comparison period, statistics and the reason the station-to-grid match is representative.
  • Exact access URLs: DMI climate-data documentation, DMI historical collection, GEUS THREDDS catalog, DMI ERA5_HIRHAM5 directory and the relevant PROMICE|GC-Net data paper.

A defensible source-selection decision

Choose DMI stationValue when your question is tied to a coastal station and you can tolerate station-specific gaps. Choose the DMI historical collection when you need the documented Ilulissat or Tasiilaq daily records and can address their untested homogeneity. Choose PROMICE/GC-Net when the ice-sheet surface and AWS processing are central, selecting Level 2 or Level 3 intentionally. Choose ERA5_HIRHAM5 or another documented model when you need spatial continuity, but validate it at the relevant observations and report the grid’s limitations.

The strongest project often uses these sources together without pretending they are equivalent: observations establish what happened at particular sites, AWS products extend measurements onto the ice sheet, and gridded products provide spatial context. Keeping those roles, definitions and uncertainties separate is what makes a Greenland precipitation analysis reproducible and credible.
