For local emergency and evacuation instructions in the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI), start with the latest official CNMI Governor’s Office, Homeland Security and Emergency Management (HSEM), or Joint Information Center (JIC) notice for your island. For weather watches, warnings, and advisories, check the National Weather Service (NWS) Guam active hazards page. If internet access is limited, NWS Guam also lists a telephone recording at 211 for the CNMI and NOAA Weather Radio service for Saipan.
Where to get official CNMI emergency updates
Governor’s Office and HSEM bulletins
Check the CNMI Governor’s official bulletin archive for emergency and recovery updates. Read the notice’s publication date and the island it covers: arrangements in an older bulletin may no longer be in effect. The archive has also cautioned the public about misinformation and rumors.

Joint Information Center updates
During a response, the JIC coordinates public information. For verified updates, weather advisories, emergency instructions, and evacuation information, use JIC channels identified by an official CNMI or municipal notice. The Tinian Mayor’s official page identifies the JIC WhatsApp channel as an information source. Follow the link from that official page, rather than an unverified forwarded invite, and turn on notifications if they are useful to you.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe JIC has stated: “The public is informed to be aware of false information and rumors that may be spreading.” Before sharing a screenshot or repost, check that it came from an official account and whether a newer notice corrects or replaces it.

How to check weather alerts for your island
Use the NWS Guam active hazards page for current weather watches, warnings, and advisories affecting the Marianas. Select or check the relevant island; the page’s Marianas hazard selector has listed Rota, Tinian, and Saipan. The page is live, so its status can change.
Ways to get information when internet access is limited
| Option | What it provides | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Official CNMI bulletins and JIC channels | Local emergency instructions and updates, including evacuation information. | Online channels depend on connectivity; check the notice date and island. |
| NWS Guam active hazards page | Weather watches, warnings, and advisories for the Marianas. | It is a weather-hazard resource, not a comprehensive shelter directory. |
| NOAA Weather Radio | NWS Guam lists Saipan transmitter WXM-86 at 162.550 MHz. A compatible radio can provide a broadcast route to weather information. | The cited transmitter information is specific to Saipan; reception conditions across all islands are not established. |
| Telephone recording at 211 | NWS Guam lists 211 for recordings in Guam and the CNMI. | What the recording provides may vary; confirm its current information when you call. |
A battery-powered NOAA Weather Radio may be a useful additional option for Saipan households, but the listed transmitter does not establish coverage everywhere in the CNMI. Keep other official information routes available as well.

Where to find evacuation and shelter instructions
Use the latest official notice for your island and situation. Do not use a general web article or an old shelter list to decide whether to evacuate or where to go. Shelter locations, transport arrangements, and contact details can change, and a current comprehensive island-by-island shelter directory is not established in the available official notices cited here.

If you need transport or shelter assistance, look for current HSEM or Emergency Operations Center contact details in the latest official bulletin. A 2024 HSEM update described a Saipan arrangement in which people needing transport to designated shelters could call the HSEM State Warning Point at 670-237-8000. That was an incident-specific arrangement, not confirmation that the number or service will be active in a later emergency.

Special communications for the Northern Islands
Remote-island communications may differ from those used on Saipan, Tinian, or Rota. An older HSEM storm bulletin directed Northern Islands users to contact EOC dispatch by high-frequency single-sideband radio on 5.205.0. Because that instruction comes from a dated bulletin, do not treat it as current procedure; follow the latest HSEM instructions for Northern Islands communications.
A practical verification checklist
- Start with a current Governor’s Office, HSEM, JIC, or official municipal notice.
- Confirm the notice’s date, island, and whether a later update or correction has appeared.
- Use NWS Guam for weather hazards, and check the entry for the relevant island.
- If you need evacuation, shelter, or transport details, rely on the latest local instruction rather than a saved list or old hotline number.
- When internet access is unreliable, try 211 for the NWS-listed recording or use a compatible NOAA Weather Radio where the broadcast is available.
- Verify the source before forwarding messages, screenshots, or social posts.
Prepare alternate ways to receive information
CNMI storm bulletins have advised households to keep a preparedness kit with first-aid supplies, batteries, flashlights, toiletries, and a portable stove, and to stock food and water. Include a way to receive information when data service is unavailable, but treat radio and phone access as supplements to—not replacements for—official evacuation directions.
