The most defensible approach is to combine quality-reviewed station observations with a gridded observation product or reanalysis, then test the chosen variable and period against whatever surface observations exist. A reanalysis supplies spatially continuous estimates by synthesizing many observations, but a grid cell is not a direct measurement at your site. Reliability changes with the variable, time scale, location, historical period and observing network that was available for assimilation.
What reliable climate data means when stations are scarce
“Reliable” is not a single product label. It means the dataset is appropriate for the question, its provenance is documented, its time and space scales match the analysis, and its errors have been examined for the variable and region you care about.

A station measures conditions at one instrument location. A gridded product estimates conditions over a cell, often by blending observations with a numerical analysis system. The estimate can be extremely useful for mapping, comparison and long records, but it may smooth elevation, coastlines, urban effects or local rainfall that a point sensor would capture. A 31-kilometre grid spacing, for example, describes the distance between ERA5 grid points; it does not promise 31-kilometre local accuracy.

For a poorly observed region, confidence usually comes from triangulation: inspect station records, compare more than one suitable gridded source where practical, and quantify agreement at stations before drawing conclusions about unobserved areas.

Step 1: Define the climate question before choosing a dataset
Write down the variable, spatial scale, time step, historical period and decision the data must support. The same location may need different sources for a monthly climatology, an analysis of daily extremes and an engineering assessment of a particular site.
| Intended use | Variable examples | Useful scale | Key design question |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monthly climate description | Mean temperature, total precipitation | Grid-cell or regional average | Does the record cover the same months and baseline period at comparable stations? |
| Daily extremes | Maximum temperature, heavy-rain days, minimum temperature | Daily or sub-daily | Can the product represent local peaks, or does spatial averaging suppress them? |
| Hydrology or agriculture | Precipitation, temperature, radiation, wind | Catchment, farm or management unit | Are the variable-specific errors acceptable for the model and decisions? |
| Site-specific planning | Wind, heat, solar resource or radiation | Point or very small area | Is there a nearby, comparable observation or a downscaling and validation procedure? |
Record the intended output as a short specification. Include units, desired temporal aggregation, the period of interest, whether you need a trend or a climatological average, and the tolerance for error. This prevents a convenient hourly series from being used for a question that actually requires carefully validated daily extremes.
Step 2: Inventory and screen available station observations
Start with quality-reviewed archives
NASA describes NOAA/NCEI’s Global Historical Climatology Network-Daily (GHCN-Daily) as an integrated archive of daily land-station summaries with common quality-assurance reviews. The archive contains more than 100,000 stations in 180 countries and territories, according to a NASA Science explainer accessed in 2026. That is the size of the global archive, not a promise that a station is near your study site or that every station has a complete record.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesSearch by coordinates and elevation, then inspect each candidate station’s record length, missing months, variable coverage and observation frequency. A station several hundred kilometres away, or on a different side of a mountain range, may be less representative than a shorter record at a comparable elevation. Keep a list of rejected stations and the reason for rejection so the selection can be reproduced.
Check continuity, not just record length
A long time series can contain non-climatic jumps. NASA notes that station relocation, equipment changes and changes in data sources can create fluctuations unrelated to weather. Homogenization methods attempt to identify and adjust such discontinuities, but adjustment uncertainty remains relevant. Examine archive flags, documented breaks and any homogenized version separately from the raw series.

- Measure completeness by month and year rather than relying on the nominal start and end dates.
- Check whether the variable’s definition or observing time changed.
- Compare overlapping stations when a move or instrument replacement is documented.
- Preserve the original values and quality flags alongside any adjusted series.
Build a station baseline for validation
Choose stations that overlap the product period and have enough valid observations for the statistic you will calculate. Keep the matching rule explicit: nearest grid cell, bilinear interpolation or an area average. Do not silently mix these methods, because a station-to-grid comparison can change when the spatial matching changes.
Step 3: Add a gridded observation product or reanalysis
What reanalysis contributes
NOAA/NCEI defines reanalysis as a set of data-synthesis methods that incorporates different datasets into one regularly spaced grid. Reanalysis systems also help compensate for biases among observing instruments as observing systems change over time. The result is a coherent, regularly sampled record that is easier to compare across locations than a patchwork of station series.
It remains an estimate. The analysis is influenced by the observations available for assimilation, the model and its physics, and the observing system of the era. Sparse observations generally increase uncertainty, particularly in early periods and in places far from assimilated measurements.
ERA5 and ERA5-Land
ERA5 is a global reanalysis with hourly output and approximately 31-kilometre grid spacing. Copernicus Climate Change Service quality documentation warns that uncertainty is higher in early decades and in data-sparse regions, especially before the satellite era. It also recommends caution in trend analysis because changes in the observing system can introduce inhomogeneities. For some higher-resolution land applications, the documentation identifies ERA5-Land as a potentially preferable option, but suitability still depends on the variable and the validation evidence for your location.
Use the hourly data only when the question needs that frequency. Aggregating to daily or monthly values does not remove all structural or representativeness errors; it changes which errors matter.

NASA POWER sources
NASA POWER’s meteorological parameters use MERRA-2 assimilation data. Its solar-resource values are inferred from satellite observations, so the provenance is not identical across variables. POWER documentation provides source-specific resolution and uncertainty information; do not assume that a temperature field and a solar-radiation field have the same performance simply because they are delivered through one interface.
NASA POWER states that its uncertainty estimates are based on comparisons with surface measurements. Treat that as an invitation to inspect the variable-level validation, not as a blanket accuracy guarantee.
Compare candidate products on the dimensions that affect your result
ERA5 and NASA POWER are examples rather than universal winners. Compare the exact dataset version and variable you intend to use.
| Comparison axis | Questions to answer | Why it matters in sparse regions |
|---|---|---|
| Provenance and assimilated inputs | Which observations, model and assimilation system produced the field? | Different observing inputs can produce different errors where stations are scarce. |
| Variable availability | Is the required temperature, precipitation, wind, radiation or derived quantity supplied directly? | A directly analysed variable is not interchangeable with a satellite-inferred one. |
| Spatial resolution | What is the grid spacing, and what terrain or coastline is averaged within a cell? | Resolution describes sampling, not local observational accuracy. |
| Temporal resolution | Are values hourly, daily or monthly, and how are aggregates calculated? | Extremes and totals can respond differently to temporal smoothing. |
| Historical coverage and observing era | Does the period include pre-satellite decades or major observing-system changes? | Early and transition periods may have larger uncertainty or inhomogeneity. |
| Validation design | Which stations, geography, years and variable were compared? | An aggregate result from another climate zone may not transfer to your site. |
| Error and uncertainty reporting | Are bias, RMSE, correlation and uncertainty reported separately by variable? | One good statistic can hide poor performance for another variable. |
| Access and reproducibility | Can you record the version, query, units and aggregation needed to recreate the series? | Reproducible inputs are essential when observations are limited. |
Step 4: Validate the variable and period against stations
Validation should resemble the analysis you plan to publish. Match the grid and station in time, convert units consistently, and calculate statistics for the same aggregation and period. A monthly comparison cannot establish reliability for hourly rainfall extremes.
Use more than correlation
Correlation or R-squared shows whether variations line up; it does not show whether the product is systematically too wet, too dry, hot or cold. Report a bias or mean error, an absolute-error measure and a measure of association. RMSE is useful because it weights large errors, but it is sensitive to outliers and should be interpreted with the distribution of observations.

What NASA POWER’s published comparison shows
NASA POWER compared hourly MERRA-2 parameters with NOAA/NCEI Integrated Surface Database observations at 2,599 stations for 2001–2020. The aggregate results differ sharply by variable:
| Variable and aggregation | Evaluation period | RMSE | R-squared | How to use the figure |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hourly temperature | 2001–2020 | 3.32 °C | 0.96 | Aggregate station comparison, not a guarantee for an individual site. |
| Hourly precipitation | 2001–2020 | 1.24 mm | 0.06 | Low association indicates that hourly rainfall timing and amount require particular caution. |
| Daily average temperature | 1981–2020 | 2.10 °C | 0.97 | Aggregate daily comparison over the stated period. |
| Daily precipitation | 1981–2020 | 3.69 mm/day | 0.39 | Moderate aggregate association does not establish local rainfall accuracy. |
These figures are evaluation statistics for the stated station network and periods. They demonstrate why a product cannot be rated “good” without naming the variable and time scale: temperature agreement is much stronger than precipitation agreement in this comparison.
Make the validation geographically relevant
Stratify results by elevation, distance to coast, climate zone or other feature that controls representativeness. If only one station overlaps the target area, label the result as a local check rather than a regional validation. Use withheld stations or a time split when possible so that the evaluation is not simply a comparison used to tune the selection.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Step 5: Handle temporal changes and trend questions carefully
Long records combine observing systems. The introduction of satellites, changes in radiosonde networks, station moves and instrument replacements can alter the information entering a reanalysis or station archive. ERA5 quality guidance specifically cautions that such changes may introduce inhomogeneities relevant to trend analysis.

Test whether the trend appears in multiple reasonable datasets and in the overlapping station record, while keeping the tests separate from the final result. A climatological average over a stable modern period may be defensible even when a century-scale trend would require stronger qualification.

Step 6: Match the workflow to the application
Monthly climatologies
Compute monthly means or totals from a consistent period, then compare them with stations that have adequate monthly completeness. Grid-cell averaging may be useful for regional summaries, but document how cells were selected and whether elevation differences could bias the comparison.
Daily extremes and precipitation events
Use daily or sub-daily fields only after checking event timing and intensity against stations. Precipitation is especially sensitive to spatial displacement: a storm can occur in the grid cell while missing the station, or vice versa. Report event-detection limitations rather than treating a low correlation as a minor technical detail.
Hydrology and agriculture
Validate every forcing variable used by the model. A temperature field that performs well does not validate precipitation, wind or radiation. Preserve the temporal aggregation and units expected by the downstream model, and test whether systematic wet or dry bias changes simulated outcomes.
Site-specific decisions
For a single facility, farm or community, treat the grid as a regional estimate and seek local observations, elevation corrections or a documented downscaling method. A nearest-cell value can be a starting point, not proof that conditions at the site are measured.
Common failure modes and fixes
- Choosing the nearest station without checking representativeness. Fix: compare elevation, terrain, coastline exposure, record completeness and documented station changes.
- Equating grid spacing with accuracy. Fix: describe the grid geometry separately from station-based error statistics.
- Using one product for every variable. Fix: inspect provenance and validation for each variable, especially when meteorological and solar fields come from different source systems.
- Reporting only R-squared. Fix: add bias and an error measure such as RMSE, and state the stations and period used.
- Combining unlike periods. Fix: align the product and station dates before calculating a climatology, trend or event statistic.
- Ignoring station discontinuities. Fix: review quality flags, relocation and equipment metadata, and distinguish raw from homogenized records.
- Assuming modern performance applies to early decades. Fix: identify satellite-era boundaries and follow the product’s uncertainty guidance for earlier periods.
- Publishing a global product as equally reliable everywhere. Fix: qualify the result by location, variable, period and local validation evidence.
How to document a defensible dataset choice
For every downloaded series, retain a machine-readable record containing:
- Dataset name, version or release and access date.
- Variable name, units and whether it is analysed, observed, model-derived or satellite-inferred.
- Grid-cell coordinates or station identifier, elevation information and spatial matching method.
- Temporal frequency, aggregation rule, calendar and exact start and end dates.
- Station records used for validation, including geography, completeness and quality treatment.
- Bias, RMSE or other error statistics, with the variable, period and station sample attached to each number.
- Known uncertainty, observing-system changes and limitations that affect the intended application.
- Query parameters, processing code and checksums or archived files sufficient to reproduce the result.
In the article, report the result in the same terms. For example, say that a daily temperature series from a named reanalysis grid cell was compared with specified stations over a stated period, then give the observed error statistics. Do not call it a local measurement or imply that the validation proves performance outside the tested geography.
A practical decision sequence
- Write the specification. State variable, units, spatial scale, frequency, period and use.
- Search station archives. Identify nearby and climatologically comparable stations, then inspect completeness and metadata.
- Flag discontinuities. Separate raw and homogenized records and note moves, equipment changes and source changes.
- Select candidate grids. Compare provenance, resolution, temporal coverage, observing era and uncertainty documentation.
- Extract matching periods. Align calendars, units, aggregation and spatial matching before comparison.
- Validate by variable. Calculate bias and error measures alongside correlation, and stratify results where geography matters.
- Test sensitivity. Check whether the substantive conclusion changes with another suitable product, station subset or aggregation.
- Report limits. Identify what is measured, what is estimated, how it was validated and where uncertainty remains.
What cannot be chosen universally
No single product is established as best for every sparse-coverage region, variable, time scale or application. A defensible recommendation requires the target geography, variable, period and intended use, followed by a local comparison wherever observations permit. ERA5, ERA5-Land and NASA POWER can each be useful in appropriate circumstances, but their suitability must be demonstrated for the specific question rather than inferred from global coverage or nominal resolution.
