To find an existing photo in Google Photos, tap Search in the mobile app or visit photos.google.com/search on a computer. Search with a person’s name only after Face Groups is on and you’ve labeled that face group; for places, objects, and scenes, try a place name or a plain-language description.
Start a search in Google Photos
- On a phone or tablet: Open the Google Photos app and tap Search.
- On a computer: Go to photos.google.com/search.
- Enter a name, place, object, or description of the scene you remember. Suggested searches may also appear.
Controls can vary by platform and app version, and some features are not available for every region, domain, or account type, according to Google Photos Help.

Find a person or pet
Use a suggested face or People & pets
Tap a suggested face in Search, or open People & pets and choose a face group. This is useful when you recognize the face but have not labeled it with a name.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsSearch by name or nickname
To search by a person’s name or nickname, first turn on Face Groups and label the relevant group. Once your own face group is labeled me, you can search for yourself using “me.” Google’s example “Alice and me laughing” combines labeled people with an activity.
#1 Best Overall
- Attention-grabbing design meets the latest evolution of the Google Pixel Camera on the new Google Pixel 11 Pro; Gemini Intelligence helps manage details so you can live in the moment[1]; and the phone is available in two sizes
- Unlocked Android phone gives you the flexibility to change carriers and choose your own data plan: Works with Google Fi, Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, and other major carriers[2]
- Stay informed without looking at your screen: When your phone is face down, Pixel HiLight gently alerts you with subtle glowing lights when your favorite contacts are calling or you’re talking with Gemini; exclusive to Google Pixel 11 Pro phones
- Magic Capture catches the moment as you live it: With just one tap, Pixel 11 Pro captures video and photos, and automatically edits, crops, and unblurs a curated collection, ready to share – and you get the memory of how it felt to be in the moment
- Two new cameras for more brilliant photos: A larger telephoto sensor captures 30% more light for clear, beautiful photos and videos, even in the dark[3]; Pixel’s longest zoom ever helps you capture details from impressive distances[4]
To label your own group, open the face group in Google Photos, choose Add a name (or the displayed name-edit control), and enter “me.” Google’s instructions for labeling a face group are at Label a face group. Labels and face groups are private to the account by default and are not shared across accounts when photos are shared. Turning on Face Groups allows Google to create face models from photos; Google notes that these may be considered biometric data in some jurisdictions. Google also says turning the feature off deletes face models, groups, and labels, subject to its retention policies and account-inactivity conditions. Some Face Groups operations are country-limited. See Google’s Face Groups guidance before enabling it if these privacy implications matter to you.
Find photos by place
Search for a place name, or combine a subject and location—for example, “colorful sunsets in Mexico.” Google recommends enabling location settings for your camera so photos are easier to organize and find by location. A photo without usable location information may not appear for a place search, so a subject-based query can be worth trying too.

Find an object, activity, or remembered scene
Use ordinary descriptive terms for what is in the picture or what was happening. Google’s simple examples include “beach” and “dog.” More specific phrases can combine people, actions, and settings:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- “Emma at the playground”
- “drinking tea by the fireplace”
These are query examples, not guarantees that every search will find a match. If a broad term returns too many results, add a location, activity, or other detail you remember.
Search for text in a photo or its details
Put a phrase in quotation marks when you want an exact text match in supported fields such as filenames, camera models, captions, or text visible within photos. Without quotation marks, the search is broader. For example, searching for the name of a veterinary clinic may help locate a pet’s invoice if that name appears in the image or its attached information. Google explains text and phrase searches in its search guidance.
Check whether a result is shared content
Search results can include items from shared albums or conversations that have not been saved to your own library. Check the shared-content badge or ownership information if a result seems unfamiliar. To exclude items shared with you, use the results menu’s Shared with me control. Google’s web search instructions describe the shared-item controls at Google Photos Help.

When to try Ask Photos
For a straightforward search—such as a person, dog, or beach—ordinary Search is the place to start. If Ask Photos is available for your account and you have opted in to Gemini features, it can handle more conversational requests. Google describes Ask Photos as experimental and warns that it may return unexpected or inaccurate results. Treat its response as a way to locate candidate images, then inspect the actual photo and details rather than assuming the answer is correct. Availability can vary; see Google’s search guidance and Ask Photos help.
