In the Photos app, add a custom keyword to a photo or video, then search for that label. Open the item, tap the Info button (or swipe up), choose Add Keywords, save the label, and later select the matching search suggestion marked Aa.
What a keyword does in iPhone Photos
A keyword is a custom tag that you attach to a photo or video. It is useful for information that Photos cannot reliably infer, such as “school play,” “tax receipts,” “garden project,” or a client name. Apple describes keywords this way: “Keywords are tags or labels you add to your photos and videos to help you easily find them.”

The tag is not added automatically. You must apply it to each relevant item before Photos can retrieve that item by the custom label. The same workflow works for still images and video clips.

Add a keyword to a photo or video
- Open Photos and open the photo or video you want to label.
- Open the item details. Tap the Info button, or swipe up on the media.
- Choose Add Keywords. Type a short label that describes why you may want to find the item later.
- Tap Done. The keyword is now attached to that photo or video.
If the item already has keywords, use Edit in the keyword field to add another label or change the existing ones. You can apply more than one label when an item belongs to multiple projects or occasions.

Choose labels that will be easy to remember
- Use a consistent spelling, such as
Kitchen remodelevery time instead of alternating betweenKitchen remodelandKitchen renovation. - Include a year when the same event repeats, for example
Camping 2026. - Use labels for facts that are not obvious from the image, such as a document purpose, customer, school activity, or planned post.
- Keep labels distinctive. A very broad word can produce a large result set that is harder to scan.
These are organization choices rather than Photos requirements. The important requirement is that the exact label be saved on the media before you search for it.
Find the tagged items by keyword
- In Photos, tap Search.
- Enter the keyword you previously added.
- When Photos shows the matching keyword suggestion, select the suggestion marked Aa. That opens the photos and videos carrying that label.
Apple says you can type multiple keywords separated by spaces. This is useful when you want to narrow a search with more than one label, although the result depends on the items actually carrying those labels. If a word was never saved as a keyword, Photos cannot find it as your custom tag.
Limit results to video or another media type
Add a media term to the search when you know what kind of item you are looking for. For example, include Video to focus on video clips or Portrait when you want portrait-mode images. Photos can also scope a search to the library, an album, or a collection, so use the location in which you expect the item to be stored.
Keyword search versus Photos’ other search methods
A custom keyword is only one route into your library. Pick the route that matches what you remember about the item.

For example, search by a city if you remember the trip location, by a month if you remember the date, or by a custom keyword if you deliberately labeled the files for a project. You do not need to add a keyword for information Photos already exposes through these other search categories.
Search for a scene with natural language
On devices with Apple Intelligence enabled, Photos can accept a natural-language description of an image and can search video clips for particular key moments. You might describe an image in terms of its scene or action instead of entering a single tag.
This is an optional route, not a replacement for ordinary keyword tagging. Apple Intelligence availability depends on the iPhone model, the enabled language, and the region, and those conditions can change with software releases. If the feature is unavailable on your device, use custom keywords and the standard date, place, category, event, people, pet, text, or caption searches instead.

Enhanced Visual Search can identify landmarks and points of interest in Photos or Spotlight, including cases in which the photo or video has no saved geolocation information. Apple documents Enhanced Visual Search as beginning with iOS 18, while availability and behavior can vary by release and region.

Apple states that “Enhanced Visual Search works without sending your photos or videos to Apple.” This feature is useful when the thing you remember is a recognizable landmark rather than a label, date, or GPS location. It remains separate from a custom keyword: it does not create the label you would see as an Aa suggestion.
Use Live Text when the words are inside the picture
Live Text addresses a different problem from library retrieval. If a sign, receipt, screenshot, or paused video frame visibly contains text, Live Text can recognize that text so you can select, copy, translate, or search it.
Use Photos Search when you want to locate media in your library. Use Live Text after opening the image or pausing the video when you want to act on words shown in that media. A phone number printed on a document, for example, can be selected with Live Text; it does not have to be stored as a custom keyword to use it.
Troubleshoot a keyword search that returns nothing
The label was never saved
Open one of the expected photos or videos, swipe up or tap Info, and inspect its keyword field. If the label is absent, choose Add Keywords, enter it, and tap Done. Searching for a word that appears only in your memory, but was never attached to the item, will not produce a custom-keyword result.

The spelling does not match
Check the saved label in the item’s information panel and enter that wording in Search. Correct punctuation, spaces, and spelling are especially important when you use a project code, person’s name, or year. If you have used several variations, edit the items so the same label is applied consistently.
You searched the wrong place
Photos can scope a search to the library, an album, or a collection. Return to the main Photos search and check the selected scope if an item exists but is not appearing where expected. Also remove an accidental media filter such as Video when you are looking for still images, or add it when you want only clips.
You expected a caption, visible text, or a scene to behave like a keyword
Captions, Live Text, category recognition, dates, places, events, and identified people or pets are separate search systems. Use the corresponding search term or feature instead of expecting those words to appear under your custom Aa keyword list.
The interface looks different
Apple can change labels and placement between iOS releases. The documented workflow remains based on opening the item, viewing its information, adding or editing keywords, and searching for the saved label. If a button has moved, look for the item’s Info view or the keyword field rather than relying on a particular icon position.

Label items at the point of capture or import
Adding a keyword while an event or project is still fresh reduces the chance that you will forget what a group of images represents. For a large backlog, start with the albums or collections you search most often instead of trying to tag the entire library at once.
Use a small, repeatable vocabulary
Decide whether your labels will identify a project, occasion, person, location, or purpose, and keep the pattern stable. A label such as Invoice 2026 is easier to reuse than a different phrase for every receipt. If one item belongs to multiple contexts, add multiple keywords rather than creating an increasingly long single label.
Combine a keyword with a second clue
Once the custom label brings up the right group, narrow it with a media type, date, place, or another keyword when needed. This is more reliable than making a new one-off label for every possible combination.
Review tags before deleting or sharing
Keywords are metadata attached to the media. Before you share a file outside your library, consider whether its labels reveal a project, customer, school activity, or other information you do not want recipients to see. Keep the labels that help your own retrieval, but avoid putting sensitive details in a tag when the file may be distributed broadly.
Requirements and availability notes
- The procedure uses the built-in Photos app; no separate photo-management app, accessory, or paid service is required.
- Custom keyword tagging and the Aa search suggestion are documented Photos features, but exact interface labels can change.
- Apple Intelligence image descriptions and video key-moment search require a supported device, language, and region.
- Enhanced Visual Search is documented from iOS 18 and may not behave identically in every release or locale.
- People and pet searches depend on the identities Photos has recognized in the People & Pets collection.
- Place-based searches are affected by the location information and recognition data available for each item.
Bottom line
For a label you control, tag the photo or video first, then use Photos Search and choose the matching Aa suggestion. For everything else, search by the clue you actually remember—date, place, event, category, person, pet, caption, visible text, or landmark—and use Apple Intelligence only when your device, language, and region support it.
