Open File Explorer, select Pictures in the left navigation pane, and browse the files there. To find a particular image, search from that folder by name or keyword. If you are unsure where it is saved, search from This PC instead; that broader search can take longer. You can also use Microsoft Photos to search by name, date, file type, or location.
Browse the Pictures folder in File Explorer
- Open File Explorer from the taskbar, or right-click Start and choose File Explorer.
- Select Pictures in the left navigation pane.
- Browse the folder contents and open a photo to view it.
The Pictures folder is a starting point, not a promise of one fixed drive path: its location can vary with your Windows folder setup. Microsoft’s Windows file-search guidance describes searching from a chosen folder or from This PC.

Search for a photo by name or keyword
Search only Pictures
Select the Pictures folder, then use File Explorer’s search box to enter part of the filename or a keyword. Starting in Pictures narrows the search to that location.

If you do not know which folder contains the image, select This PC and search there. Microsoft describes this as a slower, more in-depth search than searching a specific folder. Windows search results can also depend on indexing settings.

Find photos in the Microsoft Photos app
- Open Start, type Photos, and open the Photos app.
- Search by the photo’s name, capture date, file type, or location.
- If the folder you need is not shown, add that local folder in Photos.
The Pictures folder appears in Photos by default. Microsoft’s Photos app guide explains its folder and search options. The newer Photos app does not include Photos Legacy’s People tab or tag search; when connected to OneDrive, it syncs files in the OneDrive Pictures library, and other OneDrive folders may need to be added. See Microsoft’s overview of changes in the new Photos app.
Natural-language search is limited to Copilot+ PCs
On Copilot+ PCs, Windows 11 can search indexed local photos with natural-language phrases such as “sunset at the beach.” Microsoft documents this capability for Copilot+ PCs; it is not a feature to assume is available on every Windows 11 computer. Details are in Microsoft’s Photos search instructions.

If the photo is missing from Pictures
- Check another local folder: Add the suspected folder to Photos and search there.
- Check OneDrive: If you store or sync pictures there, look in its photo experience and confirm the relevant folders are included. Microsoft notes that showing a local folder in that experience does not upload the files by itself. See Browse and manage your photos on Windows.
- Review app access: If Photos cannot access pictures or save changes as expected, check Settings > Privacy & security and review the app’s picture-library access. Microsoft’s library access and privacy guidance covers these controls.
Use location search thoughtfully
Photos can use latitude and longitude embedded in an image to help find where it was taken. Location search is optional. Microsoft says its Location Service uses this information to determine where a photo or video was taken and does not store the information; separately, OneDrive warns that location tags can reveal personal information. Consider the privacy implications before using or sharing location-tagged photos. See Microsoft’s Photos search guidance and OneDrive’s guidance on organizing and finding photos.
