To find a safe way to a business during road construction, start with the responsible transportation agency’s project page, read its newest update, and open the latest detour or local-access map. Check the local 511 service, follow signs at the site, then contact the business to confirm its current entrance and parking. A through-traffic detour does not necessarily mean a business is unreachable—but vehicle access is not guaranteed at every work site or time.
How do I find the current detour?
- Find the official project page. Search the road, neighborhood, or destination name with “construction” or “road closure,” then open the relevant city, county, or state transportation agency page.
- Read the newest update. Check its publication date, work phase, closure limits, working hours, and effective dates. Schedules may be tentative and weather-dependent; Saint Paul’s project updates, for example, warn that plans can change. Check again just before leaving.
- Open the latest map for your trip. Look for separate maps covering through traffic, local business access, parking, and pedestrian routes. The City of Saint Paul’s Grand Avenue Reconstruction page lists detour and local-business-access maps, illustrating why it matters to choose the newest map rather than rely on an older one: Grand Avenue Reconstruction.
- Check the local 511 or live travel service. Use the service for the jurisdiction where you are traveling, along with the project page. Minnesota and Alaska transportation agencies direct travelers to their 511 and project-information channels for current impacts. MnDOT also cautions that navigation apps may select a route other than the official detour: MnDOT: Helping Businesses During Construction and Alaska DOT&PF: Project Development and Businesses.
- Follow on-site signs and traffic staff. Do not enter a closed road or active work area based only on a map or navigation-app suggestion. If signs seem to conflict with an old online map, follow on-site traffic control and contact the project agency or destination for clarification.
When comparing routes or project notices, check the phase and timing, whether only through traffic is diverted or local access is affected too, permitted entrances and turn restrictions, legal parking and walking distance, pedestrian or transit routes, and the update date. A stale map and current signed conditions are not equivalent.

Does a road closure mean a business is inaccessible?
Not necessarily. A detour may be intended for through traffic while local customers can still reach businesses by a different route. MnDOT explains that business access can remain available even when through traffic is detoured, although routes and signs may change during construction. The agency’s business construction guidance and Hwy 3/Robert St. project information describe temporary access routes and signs.

Do not assume that a driveway or entrance is open just because local access is mentioned. Conditions depend on the project, work phase, time of day, and safety arrangements. Hampshire County Council says vehicles may be unable to enter or leave properties inside an active work area during working hours for some planned works, while NJDOT’s Route 70 traffic-mitigation plan provides for business driveway access under specified conditions. These local examples show why a general promise about access would be unreliable: Hampshire County: Planned Maintenance and NJDOT: Route 70 Corridor Traffic Mitigation Plan.

Where can I park while the road is closed?
Parking depends on the location and current construction phase. Check the latest project map or update for legal parking, restrictions, and any walk from the parking area; then call the business if anything is unclear. Hennepin County specifically advises visitors to contact a business about changes to access or parking: Nicollet Avenue reconstruction in Richfield.
Local project instructions can differ. Caltrans’s Hopland 101 project describes street parking where construction is not taking place and additional nearby parking: Hopland 101 Project. In a September 2026 update, Saint Paul told Payne Avenue visitors to park outside a closed section and walk to the corresponding business: Payne Avenue Pedestrian Intersection Improvements. Neither example establishes a parking rule for other projects.

How can I check a business entrance, delivery, or accessible route?
Contact the specific business before traveling if the entrance, parking, delivery arrangements, or accessibility is uncertain. Ask which entrance is currently open, where a vehicle may legally park, whether vehicle access is available during your arrival window, and which accessible pedestrian route to use. Confirm any delivery instructions directly with the business rather than assuming a usual loading area remains available.

Hampshire County directs pedestrians along footways and advises following traffic-management operatives; Saint Paul’s Payne Avenue update describes pedestrian routes around work areas. Do not cross barriers or walk through an active work zone to reach a door.

What if the map, app, and road signs disagree?
Give current signs and directions from traffic staff priority over an outdated online map or a navigation-app route. MnDOT notes, “Apps often choose the fastest route, not the official detour.” If the signed route does not appear to reach the business, stop somewhere safe and contact the project agency or business instead of attempting an unmarked shortcut. Project notices can change, so verify the latest update and the destination’s instructions immediately before travel.
