Open the retailer’s official website or app, sign in, and check the specific order for its status and any action prompt. “On hold” is not a standard status across retailers: it can mean payment verification, a pending card authorization, or a retailer review. Follow the order-specific instructions, and contact the retailer or your card issuer depending on what the status actually describes.
What “on hold” can mean
A hold may stop order processing, or it may describe money reserved by your card issuer. Those are different issues, and the order page or retailer’s message is the best place to identify which one applies.

- Payment verification: The retailer needs you to verify the payment method before proceeding. For example, Amazon UK says a digital order can be held pending payment verification; that guidance applies to the digital-order case described on its page, not every Amazon order or country. - Pending authorization: Your bank or card issuer may show a temporary reservation of funds. It is not necessarily a completed charge, and it does not by itself mean the order has shipped.
- Processing, fulfillment, or security review: A retailer may need to resolve an availability, address, shipping, or account-review issue before the order can proceed. The specific reason varies by retailer and order.
Retailers publish examples of problems that can interrupt an order, but those examples are not a diagnosis of yours. Walmart lists unavailable stock, quantity limits, unavailable shipping methods, listing or price errors, an older unsupported app or browser, and requests for more information from its Credit and Fraud Avoidance department among reasons an order or part of it may be canceled. How to find the order-specific reason
- Go to the retailer directly. Type its known website address or open its official app, then sign in. Avoid links in an unexpected order message.
- Open the exact order. Check the current status, any warning or action prompt, and whether the notice applies to the whole order or only an item.
- Check the account’s email and text messages. Look for the confirmation and later updates. Compare the order number, items, and status with the information shown after signing in.
- Use the authenticated workflow if action is required. If the order page asks you to verify payment or correct an address, follow the instructions there. Change payment details only if the account offers that option.
- Ask the retailer if the order page is unclear. Use support reached through the official site or app. Give the order number and ask what specific action, information, or review is outstanding.
- Ask your card issuer about a pending authorization. If the order page shows no action but your card account shows a pending amount, ask the issuer about its status and release timing.
Retailer pages and interfaces can change, so rely on the current order page and current notice rather than an old message or general advice.
How to tell a pending authorization from a charge
A pending card entry may be an authorization: a temporary reservation that lets the retailer process an order. It is not necessarily a final posted charge. Target says authorization holds are not actual charges and may remain until they expire, the issuer removes them, or they are settled. It says a financial institution may take a few days to clear one, and multiple authorizations can appear when an order ships in parts or uses different fulfillment methods. Walmart says its temporary hold appears as pending, while the final order total is charged when the order is picked up, delivered, or shipped. Walmart says the bank removes the hold under its own policies after the order is complete: “We can’t remove the hold, only the bank can.” Walmart’s guidance says removal can take up to 10 days after order completion; that is Walmart’s stated guidance for its process, not a general deadline for all retailers or card issuers. Do not assume that every pending entry will clear on the same schedule. The issuer controls release timing, and the retailer may not be able to remove an authorization once it has been placed.

What to do if verification is required
Use the order page or another authenticated account workflow to complete a requested check. If the order identifies an expired or incorrect payment method, update it only through an option provided in the account. If the address is the stated problem, check and correct the address through the retailer’s account or support process. Do not send full card details or account credentials in response to an unsolicited email, text, or call.
Timing can be specific to a retailer, order type, and region. Amazon UK says that for the digital-order payment-verification case described on its page, an order is automatically canceled if the payment method is not verified within seven days of the email notification. Its guidance says to contact the bank or financial institution if help completing verification is needed. How to avoid fake order-support contacts
An unexpected text, call, or email claiming there is a problem with an order may be an impersonation attempt. Georgia’s consumer protection guidance warns that fake order-confirmation contacts may seek login credentials or payment information. Independently open the retailer’s app or type its known website address and check the order there; do not click an unsolicited link or call a number supplied in an alarming message. A retailer’s own website may also show a security check that is separate from the order status. Target says its press-and-hold check may appear when its systems detect activity that seems unusual or automated, and that the check alone does not mean there is a problem with the account.
