To find out whether your local grocery store donates unsold food, verify the specific branch: ask its manager or customer-service team which organization receives edible surplus and how often donations happen, then confirm the relationship with that organization. A company-wide announcement, map listing, or nearby food bank can point you toward an answer, but none alone proves that your branch currently donates.
Ask the exact store branch
- Identify the location. Note the store name and street address. Donation practices can differ between branches, even within one chain.
- Contact the store. Call or visit and ask for the manager, customer-service lead, or community-relations contact. Ask: “Does this location currently donate unsold food that is still safe to eat? If so, which local organization receives it, and is the donation schedule regular or limited to certain foods or days?”
- Get specifics. Ask whether donations are recurring or occasional, which types of food are included, and whether the named recipient collects the food or the store delivers it. A precise answer helps you check the right arrangement with the recipient.
Confirm with the recipient organization
Contact the named food bank, pantry, or food-rescue group and ask whether it currently receives donations from that branch or chain. Check which food categories it accepts and how pickup or delivery works. Organizations differ in their capacity to collect and handle perishables, so a store’s willingness to donate does not necessarily mean every category can be accepted. Food-rescue services and MealConnect
EPA also lists food-rescue directories, including Sustainable America’s Food Rescue Locator, as ways to find organizations that may rescue, transport, prepare, or distribute food. Check local availability and current contact details. Feeding America says companies can use MealConnect to post donations and connect with a local network partner for pickup, but that describes a possible industry channel—not proof that a particular retailer participates or a consumer-facing way to verify a branch.
Check local evidence for its date and scope
A store sustainability page, local news story, or recipient announcement naming the store can provide a useful lead. Look for the specific branch or region and the date. A corporate donation announcement may describe a program without establishing that your local location participates now. Confirm any lead with both the branch and the named recipient.

Why donation does not mean every unsold item is suitable
Unsold food can be donated only when it is wholesome and handled safely under applicable requirements. FDA guidance for retail food establishments covers intact packaging and labeling, clean handling, temperature control, safe transport, records, and relevant state or local food codes. It gives operational guidance of 135°F or above for hot food and 41°F or below for cold food. These are handling requirements for stores and recipient partners, not tasks a shopper needs to perform. The FDA says, “FDA encourages the donation of wholesome food to help reduce food loss and waste in our communities while feeding those in need.” See FDA’s retail food donation guidance.

Federal law also includes protections for certain good-faith food donations, but eligibility depends on the circumstances. The EPA says the Bill Emerson Good Samaritan Food Donation Act was updated in January 2023 to include qualified direct donors giving food to people in need; qualifying protection depends on good-faith conduct without negligence or intentional misconduct. USDA describes retail grocers as among qualified direct donors. This legal framework does not show whether a store donates, make every item eligible, or replace applicable state and local rules. Why the answer matters—and what the national figures do not tell you
EPA estimates that about 66 million tons of food were wasted across U.S. food retail, food service, and residential sectors in 2019; that is not a grocery-store-only figure. EPA also reports USDA estimates that 12.8% of U.S. households experienced food insecurity at some time during 2022, representing 44.2 million people. These national figures explain the broader context for food recovery, but they cannot establish what any one store does.
