Check two dated records: Nasdaq’s notice to confirm the company and the index-change effective date, then the ETF issuer’s holdings file dated on or after that date. Search the file by company name and ticker, verify the security description and share class, and report what that file showed on its stated date.
What you are actually trying to verify
A company being added to the Nasdaq-100 does not, by itself, prove that a particular ETF owned it. The Nasdaq-100 is an index, not a security that investors buy directly. An ETF may seek to track the index, but the evidence for your question is the ETF’s own published portfolio.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
Your conclusion should therefore be narrowly framed: “The ETF’s holdings file dated date listed (or did not list) the company’s security.” That establishes disclosed exposure on that date. It does not prove what the ETF holds today if the file is old, predict whether the position will remain, or show that the fund bought the stock specifically because of the index change.
The two records you need
| Record | What it establishes | Details to capture |
|---|---|---|
| Nasdaq addition notice or current constituent information | That the company was selected for the index and when the change became effective | Company legal name, ticker, announcement date and effective date |
| ETF issuer’s dated holdings, portfolio or daily holdings file | Whether the specific fund disclosed the company’s security | ETF ticker, file date, security description, company ticker and share class, if shown |
Do not substitute the announcement date for the effective date. Nasdaq can announce a change before the new constituents enter the index, while an ETF’s portfolio may be disclosed on a different schedule.

Step 1: Confirm the Nasdaq-100 addition
Find the official notice
Start with Nasdaq’s own notice or constituent information for the relevant change. Record the company’s exact legal name and ticker as Nasdaq presents them. Also write down both dates:
- Announcement date: when Nasdaq published the decision.
- Effective date: when the change took effect in the index, normally stated as a market-open date.
These dates answer different questions. If a notice was published on a Monday for an addition effective before the market opened on a later date, the company was not yet an effective constituent during the intervening period.
Use the correct type of Nasdaq event
“Added to the Nasdaq-100” can refer to more than the annual December reconstitution. Nasdaq’s rules also provide for quarterly rebalances, conditional fast-entry events and special-event changes. Identify the specific notice rather than assuming every addition occurred during the annual review.
Example: the December 2025 reconstitution
Nasdaq’s 2025 notice named six additions effective before the market opened on December 22, 2025: Alnylam Pharmaceuticals (ALNY), Ferrovial (FER), Insmed (INSM), Monolithic Power Systems (MPWR), Seagate Technology (STX) and Western Digital (WDC). This is a dated example of how to read a notice, not a statement that all six are current constituents or that any particular ETF currently owns them.
Step 2: Identify the exact ETF
Start with the ticker, not the fund’s nickname
Use the ETF ticker supplied by the reader or shown in the brokerage account. Similar funds can have different mandates, share classes or regional listings. The ticker lets you reach the correct issuer page and avoid checking a similarly named product.
Open the issuer’s official holdings area
On the fund sponsor’s website, look for a label such as Holdings, Portfolio, Daily holdings or All holdings. Prefer a downloadable CSV, spreadsheet or other file that includes a clear “as of” date. A screen that shows only a live or delayed snapshot is harder to use for a historical question.
For example, Invesco’s QQQ page includes an “All QQQ holdings” area and states that ETF holdings are disclosed daily. Its holdings display was not loading during the source review, so no claim about QQQ’s current ownership of a particular recent addition should be made without retrieving a current file.

Save the date with the file
Download the file or record the page’s stated date before searching. Keep the original filename and, if practical, a local copy. A holdings table can change while you are viewing it; a saved file gives you an auditable date for the result.
Step 3: Search and validate the security
Search both the company name and ticker
Use the file’s search function or your spreadsheet’s Find command. Search first for the company’s ticker from Nasdaq’s notice, then for the legal name. A ticker-only search can miss a differently formatted field, while a name-only search can return a related issuer or an old name.
For a spreadsheet, search the entire workbook if it contains multiple tabs. For a CSV or text export, use the application’s Find command and check every matching row. Do not treat a search result as final until the row’s description identifies the expected issuer.
Check the security description and share class
Confirm the issuer name, ticker and any share-class marker in the holdings row. Name changes, abbreviations and multiple share classes can create false matches. Nasdaq’s current methodology allows multiple classes of securities issued by the same company to be eligible, subject to the other index criteria, so “the company appears” and “this exact security appears” are not always identical statements.
If the holdings file lists a security identifier, exchange or share-class field, use it as an additional check. If it lists only a shortened name, compare that text with the company and ticker in Nasdaq’s notice and describe the limitation in your result.
Distinguish a real position from non-equity rows
Some holdings files include cash, derivatives, money-market instruments or other rows alongside common stocks. A matching company name in a notes field or derivative description is not automatically the same as a common-stock position. Read the row type and security description before reporting ownership.
Step 4: Align the holdings date with the index change
For a current-ownership question
- Find the addition’s effective date in Nasdaq’s notice.
- Use the newest holdings file the ETF issuer publishes.
- Confirm that the file is dated on or after the effective date. If it predates the change, it cannot establish post-change ownership.
- Recheck the latest file immediately before reporting, because ETF holdings change over time.
If the newest file is dated before the effective date, report that it is too early to answer the post-change question rather than inferring a position.

For a historical question
- Define the target date precisely: the effective date itself, a later trading day or a particular month-end.
- Locate an archived holdings file dated on or as close as possible to that date.
- Compare the file date with the question’s date and state the gap if they differ.
- Search and validate the security using the same name, ticker and share-class checks.
If the issuer does not provide an archive, contact the fund sponsor or consult its official filings. Do not reconstruct historical ownership from the ETF’s name, a current portfolio or a third-party summary.

Why one date is not enough
An announcement can precede the effective date, and a fund’s disclosed portfolio can be published daily or on another schedule. The Nasdaq notice proves the index event; the ETF file proves what that fund disclosed on its own date. Keeping both dates in your notes prevents a valid event from being paired with the wrong portfolio snapshot.
A practical timeline example
Use the December 2025 change to see how the dates work together. Nasdaq announced six additions and specified that they would enter before the market opened on December 22, 2025. A holdings file dated December 19 would be a pre-effective snapshot: even if it does not list one of those companies, it cannot answer whether the ETF disclosed the security after the change. A file dated December 22 or later is the appropriate evidence for a post-effective check, subject to the issuer’s stated “as of” date and the possibility that the fund traded or rebalanced.
For a question about ownership on December 22 itself, note whether the file is for that date or for a later publication date. If the issuer’s next available file is several days later, report that interval rather than presenting the later portfolio as a minute-by-minute record of the effective-date opening.
How Nasdaq schedules changes
Nasdaq’s current methodology describes a 100-company index of large, non-financial companies listed on Nasdaq and uses eligibility criteria plus a ranked selection process. For the annual December reconstitution, the process first selects the top 75 eligible companies by full market capitalization, retains qualifying current members ranked in the top 100, applies additional rules to certain existing members ranked 101–125 and to remaining non-members ranked in the top 100, and continues until the index reaches 100 constituents. Nasdaq’s methodology states, “The selection process concludes once the Index reaches 100 constituents.”

| Quarterly rebalance | Last trading day of February, May, August and November | After the third Friday in March, June, September and December, respectively |
Nasdaq schedules the annual announcement after the close on the sixth trading day before the effective date. The methodology and calendar can be updated, so use the current notice for the event you are checking rather than relying on a recurring date from an old article.
Checking more than one ETF
When comparing funds, use the same company and the same target date for every file. The useful comparison is exposure shown in each fund’s dated portfolio, not which fund is preferable.

| ETF | Holdings-file date | Company/security match | Share class or description | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fund 1 ticker | Date shown by issuer | Listed or not listed | Exact text from the row | Exposure shown on that date |
| Fund 2 ticker | Date shown by issuer | Listed or not listed | Exact text from the row | Exposure shown on that date |
Replace the example labels with the actual tickers and values you find. If two files have different dates, say so prominently; a later file may reflect trading or rebalancing that the earlier one could not show.
What a positive or negative result means
A validated row establishes that the ETF disclosed the matching security in that dated portfolio. It does not establish the position’s size unless the file separately provides a reliable weight or share count, and it does not establish when the fund acquired the holding. The fund could have held the security before the index event, acquired it during implementation, or changed the position afterward; the dated row alone does not identify the reason.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsLikewise, “not found” should be tied to the exact file searched. It means the company was not located under the searched name, ticker or class in that snapshot. It does not mean the ETF never owned the company, that a later file will omit it, or that the fund cannot gain exposure through another eligible security.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When the answer is unclear
The issuer page has no downloadable file
Look for a portfolio date, a holdings export button or a separate daily-holdings page on the same official site. If only a live table exists, record its displayed “as of” timestamp and avoid presenting it as a historical record.
The file is missing the company
Check spelling, punctuation, ticker format and alternate share-class notation. Then verify that the file date is on or after the index effective date. A missing match in a pre-effective file does not answer whether the fund later owned the company.
The company appears under an unexpected name
Compare the issuer’s row with Nasdaq’s legal name and ticker. Corporate name changes or abbreviated descriptions can be legitimate. If the ticker or security type conflicts, do not count it without confirmation from the issuer’s description or an official filing.
The file is inaccessible or the data is delayed
Do not fill the gap with a search-engine snippet, a social-media post or an assumption based on the benchmark name. Contact the fund issuer and request the relevant dated holdings record. State that ownership could not be verified until an official file is available.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Using the announcement date as the effective date: the index change may not yet have taken effect.
- Checking only the index: an index constituent list does not prove a specific ETF’s disclosed position.
- Assuming every Nasdaq-100-tracking label means identical holdings: verify the exact ETF ticker and issuer.
- Ignoring share classes: multiple securities from one company can have different tickers or descriptions.
- Reporting an old file as current: always include the holdings date.
- Claiming causation: a matching row shows exposure, not why the fund acquired it.
- Turning a missing record into a negative answer: “not found in this file” is different from “never owned.”
A concise, defensible reporting format
After checking the records, report the result in one compact block:
- ETF: the fund ticker and full fund name.
- Company: the legal name and ticker from Nasdaq’s notice.
- Index event: announcement date and effective date.
- Holdings source: issuer page or file name and its “as of” date.
- Match: whether the company’s security appeared, including the exact description or share class.
- Scope: that the result describes the published portfolio on that date and does not predict future holdings.
For example, a properly bounded conclusion would read: “The ETF’s holdings file dated [date] listed [security description], matching [company] ([ticker]). Nasdaq’s notice announced the addition on [announcement date], effective [effective date]. This confirms disclosed exposure on the file date only.” Use the bracketed fields only when preparing your own report; do not treat them as evidence until you have filled them from the two official records.
Final checklist
- Confirm the company identity and ticker in Nasdaq’s official notice.
- Record announcement and effective dates separately.
- Identify the ETF by its exact ticker.
- Open the fund issuer’s official holdings or daily-portfolio page.
- Save a file or page with a visible holdings date.
- Search by ticker and legal name.
- Validate the security description, class and row type.
- Ensure the file date answers the current or historical question.
- Report the ETF ticker, company ticker, file date and match status.
- Avoid inferring ownership, timing or purchase motive beyond what the dated file shows.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does an addition to the Nasdaq-100 guarantee that my ETF bought the stock?
No. The index notice confirms a constituent change, not a transaction by a particular fund. Check that ETF’s own holdings file dated on or after the effective date. A matching row shows disclosed exposure on that date, but not why or exactly when the fund acquired the security.

Use Nasdaq’s effective date to determine when the index change took effect, then use the ETF issuer’s holdings-file date to determine what the fund disclosed. Keep the announcement date separate because Nasdaq can publish the notice before the market-open effective date.
Can I rely on a brokerage or third-party holdings page?
For a defensible answer, use the fund sponsor’s official holdings, portfolio or daily-holdings page. Third-party summaries may be delayed, abbreviated or undated. If the issuer provides no archive, contact it or consult its official filings instead of reconstructing historical ownership from a current summary.
What if the company has more than one share class?
Search the legal name and ticker, then inspect the holdings row for the exact security description and class. Nasdaq’s methodology allows multiple classes to be eligible subject to its criteria, so identify the particular security that appears rather than treating every class as interchangeable.
Is the Nasdaq-100 changed only once a year?
No. Nasdaq has an annual December reconstitution, quarterly rebalances, and conditional fast-entry and special-event processes. Identify the specific notice and event type before aligning the ETF holdings date.
Recommended Free Tools
What does it mean if the company is absent from the file?
It means the matching security was not found in that particular dated snapshot after checking spelling, ticker and share-class formats. It does not prove the ETF never owned the company or that a later holdings file will omit it.
The Bottom Line
Verify the Nasdaq addition and effective date first, then search the exact ETF issuer’s dated holdings file. Match the legal name, ticker and share class, and report only the exposure that the published file shows on its stated date.
