You usually cannot identify the power plant that produced the exact electricity flowing through a wall outlet. Generators feed a shared, interconnected grid, so electrons from nuclear, gas, coal, hydro and wind plants are mixed before they reach homes. You can determine whether nuclear generation is included in the electricity service you buy by checking your utility or retail supplier’s current fuel mix, resource mix, generation mix or power-content label.
Use the provider’s disclosure for the most relevant percentage, then use the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Power Profiler and Energy Information Administration datasets as geographic and statistical cross-checks. Always report the provider or region, accounting method and year beside any nuclear percentage.

What you can—and cannot—find out
Electricity is produced by many generators and pooled on transmission and distribution networks. The grid operator constantly balances generation with demand, but it does not send a separately identifiable stream of “nuclear electrons” to one house and gas-generated electrons to another. An ordinary utility meter records how much electricity you consume, not which plant produced it.

That means the useful question is not “Which plant made the electrons in my outlet?” It is “Does nuclear generation appear in the mix assigned to my electricity service, and what percentage does the provider report?” The answer is an accounting result for a defined provider, plan, territory and reporting period—not a physical trace of each electron.

Follow this six-step method
-
1. Identify who sells and who delivers your electricity
Read a recent bill and note the company that charges you. In a regulated market, that may also be the distribution utility that owns the wires. In a deregulated market, a competitive retail supplier may bill you while a different utility delivers electricity. Record both names when they differ, because the retail supplier’s disclosure may describe the plan you purchased while the wires utility publishes a broader service-territory mix.
-
2. Locate the provider’s disclosure
On the bill or provider website, search for “fuel mix,” “resource mix,” “generation mix,” “power-content label” or “environmental disclosure.” Some jurisdictions require a standardized label. The document should identify a reporting period, resource categories and the service territory or plan covered. Save the document’s publication date and the plan name; a percentage without those details is easy to misinterpret.
-
3. Read the nuclear line in context
If nuclear has a percentage, nuclear generation is included in the provider’s reported mix under the label’s accounting rules. It does not mean every appliance was supplied by a nuclear plant at the instant it was running. Look for separate entries for imports, a residual mix, renewable-energy certificates or other certificate adjustments. Those categories can change the percentage attributed to a particular customer group.

4. Check the regional average with EPA Power Profiler
The EPA Power Profiler accepts a ZIP code or an eGRID subregion selection and shows an average fuel mix and emissions profile. Enter your ZIP code, note the eGRID subregion and record the data year displayed. Treat the result as regional context, not as a contract record for your supplier. EPA states that “Power Profiler does not provide information about the environmental attributes of electric power generated by individual companies.”
-
5. Use EIA datasets for broader context
The U.S. Energy Information Administration publishes generation statistics by source and datasets covering states, utilities and individual plants. Use the dataset whose geography matches your question and write down its year. Annual generation for a state or the nation is not the same thing as the real-time or marginal mix serving your home, and a plant-level total does not establish which retail plan claims its output.
-
6. Ask the provider when the label is ambiguous
Contact customer service or your state public utility commission if the disclosure is missing, outdated or unclear. Ask: “What is the current nuclear percentage for my exact service plan, what reporting period does it cover, and how are imports or renewable-energy certificates treated?” Request the answer in writing if you need to document the claim.

How to interpret a fuel-mix or power-content label
Provider or plan mix
A provider label normally allocates electricity sold to customers among categories such as nuclear, coal, natural gas, renewable sources and other generation. This is the closest routine answer to “Does my utility use nuclear energy?” because it is tied to the electricity service or plan you buy. Verify whether the figures describe delivered electricity, retail sales or a specific product rather than the entire grid.
Delivered mix and residual mix
A delivered mix describes the generation attributes assigned to electricity delivered to customers under the stated accounting system. A residual mix is the set of attributes left after voluntary claims—often renewable-energy certificate claims—have been removed or reassigned. Two labels can therefore show different nuclear or renewable percentages while referring to the same physical network. Read the definitions printed with the label before comparing numbers.
Imports and unclassified power
Utilities can buy power from outside their immediate territory. A label may list imports separately or assign them to generation categories. “Other,” “unspecified,” or similar wording means the provider has not attributed all electricity to a named source in the displayed table. Do not convert an unspecified share into nuclear, fossil or renewable power without an explanation from the provider.
Annual accounting is not a real-time reading
Most public labels summarize a year or another defined reporting period. Generation changes hourly and seasonally: a system can have a high annual nuclear share while gas or hydro supplies the marginal output at a particular moment. The label answers an accounting question over its stated period, not what was operating when you switched on a kettle.
Why percentages from different sources disagree
Before deciding that two numbers conflict, compare the dimensions in this table.

| Delivered mix versus residual mix | Whether certificate claims have been removed or reassigned | Renewable-energy certificate accounting can move environmental attributes between customer groups without rerouting electrons. |

Choose the source that matches the question. For “What does my plan claim?”, use the provider disclosure. For “What is typical in my area?”, use the EPA regional result. For national or state trends, use the matching EIA dataset.

What the U.S. figures show
National statistics provide context, but they are not a household-specific answer. The U.S. Energy Information Administration’s page reporting preliminary 2025 utility-scale data puts nuclear at about 18% of generation, fossil fuels at about 58% and renewable energy sources at about 24%. Those are U.S. utility-scale annual shares for 2025, reported in 2026; they should not be substituted for your utility’s plan percentage.
The EPA cites 2020 U.S. delivered-electricity shares based on EIA data as natural gas 40%, nuclear 20%, coal 19%, petroleum 1% and renewables 20%. This older national delivered mix illustrates why the year must accompany a percentage: it describes 2020, not current generation or a particular state.
| Figure | Geography and basis | Period and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| About 18% nuclear; 58% fossil fuels; 24% renewables | United States, utility-scale generation | Preliminary 2025 data reported by EIA in 2026 |
| 40% natural gas; 20% nuclear; 19% coal; 1% petroleum; 20% renewables | United States, delivered electricity | 2020 shares cited by EPA from EIA data |
| 7.1% nuclear | United Kingdom residual fuel mix | Disclosure period 1 April 2025 through 31 March 2026, published by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero |
The UK figure demonstrates why geography and accounting basis matter. It is a national residual mix for a specified disclosure period, not a universal percentage for every UK tariff and not a measurement of the electricity at one British outlet.
What EPA Power Profiler can and cannot tell you
Power Profiler is useful when you know only a ZIP code or want a common regional benchmark. It maps the ZIP code to an eGRID subregion and presents average fuel and emissions information for that region. Record the eGRID data year shown by the tool, since the result can change when EPA updates the underlying dataset.
It cannot verify that a named supplier generated a particular share of nuclear power, nor can it identify the environmental attributes of an individual company’s electricity. Do not use a regional Power Profiler percentage as proof that your retail plan has the same mix.
What EIA data adds
EIA tables let you investigate the system behind a customer label. State and national tables show generation by source; utility and plant datasets can show which facilities produced electricity and how much during a stated period. Use the table’s own geography and year, and distinguish generation from retail sales.

EIA data are especially helpful when a provider does not publish a clear customer label. You can describe the surrounding state or balancing area while clearly saying that the result is contextual. It remains insufficient to assign a plant’s output to your home without the provider’s contractual accounting.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhy a home device cannot detect nuclear electricity
A plug-in watt meter, smart plug, breaker monitor or rooftop-solar monitor can measure consumption, voltage, current, power or on-site production. None can determine whether the electricity consumed at that moment came from a nuclear, gas, coal, hydro or wind plant. Grid power is pooled and balanced across the network before it reaches the service panel.
Real-time carbon-intensity displays have the same limitation at a different scale: they estimate an area-wide mix using system data. They do not turn an individual outlet into a generator detector. Avoid products that promise to identify the source of each household electron unless they explain a separate, verifiable physical circuit; ordinary grid service does not provide one.
Nuclear power, green plans and renewable-energy certificates
What makes nuclear generation distinct
Nuclear plants generate steam through nuclear reactions rather than fuel combustion. That describes how a plant produces electricity; it does not establish which resource mix is assigned to a customer’s service. A provider can include nuclear generation in its portfolio even though the physical grid also carries power from many other technologies.
What a green-power option changes
A green-power plan generally changes the contractual environmental attribute claimed for your purchase. The supplier’s terms should explain whether renewable-energy certificates are bought, retired or otherwise assigned on your behalf. The purchase does not create a dedicated physical wire from a selected renewable plant to your house, and it does not make the electrons at your outlet individually traceable.
Why certificate treatment affects nuclear percentages
If renewable attributes are separated from the electricity and sold or retired, the remaining or residual mix can show different shares from the provider’s original delivered mix. Ask which mix the label uses before treating a nuclear percentage as comparable with a regional or national statistic.
Best Value
Troubleshooting common dead ends
There is no fuel-mix label on the bill
Search the provider’s site using all four terms: fuel mix, resource mix, generation mix and power-content label. Check a regulatory filing or your state public utility commission if the provider still does not publish one. In a deregulated market, look under the retail supplier’s plan name as well as the distribution utility’s name.
The label is several years old
Use it only for the period it identifies. Ask when the next disclosure will be issued and request the current percentage for your plan. Do not silently replace an old plan figure with a newer state or national average.
The utility and supplier show different nuclear shares
Confirm whether one number is a retail-plan mix and the other is a service-territory or residual mix. Compare the reporting periods and certificate treatment. If the definitions do not resolve the difference, send the provider the exact question about imports, residual mix and renewable-energy certificates.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The provider lists “unspecified” power
Keep that category as unspecified. It is not evidence for or against nuclear generation. Request the provider’s methodology and the percentage assigned to each source after imports and certificate adjustments.
You want the source at a particular hour
Ask for an hourly or marginal-generation data product for your balancing area, if one exists, and label it as regional system data. It still will not identify the physical source of electricity at your individual outlet.
How to write a defensible answer
When reporting your result, use a sentence that carries all of the needed qualifications: “The [provider or plan] reported [percentage] nuclear for [reporting period], using its [delivered, retail-sales or residual] mix for [service territory].” Add a separate sentence if you are using an EPA eGRID regional average or EIA state statistic. This prevents a national average from being mistaken for a personal supply figure.
- Name the utility, retail supplier or exact plan.
- State the geography or service territory.
- Include the reporting year or date range.
- Identify delivered, retail-sales, residual or other accounting basis.
- Explain imports, unspecified power or certificate adjustments when the label does.
- Keep regional averages and national statistics clearly separate from the provider result.
Geographic limits and the most reliable conclusion
The workflow above is U.S.-centered because EPA and EIA publish detailed ZIP-code, eGRID, state, utility and plant information. Other jurisdictions may require supplier fuel-mix disclosure; the UK, for example, publishes a regulated annual table. Disclosure names, reporting deadlines and accounting rules vary by country, so use the regulator or supplier serving your address.
Without your country, utility or retail supplier and exact service plan, no source can establish your personal nuclear percentage. With those details, the provider’s current fuel-mix or power-content label is the primary answer; EPA Power Profiler supplies a regional benchmark; and EIA supplies broader generation context. None can trace individual electrons from a nuclear plant to an ordinary wall outlet.
