Check the bank first: its official website and app, branch locator, customer notices, and customer-service team can tell you whether a specific office is closing, moving, consolidating, or merely changing hours. Then verify structural filings in the FDIC’s BankFind Suite and, when relevant, the OCC’s Corporate Applications Search (CAS). Regulator databases can lag or show a filing before a move is complete, so confirm the effective date, replacement location, hours, and affected services directly with the bank.
What you are trying to establish
“The headquarters is changing” can describe several different events. A bank may move its main office, change a legal headquarters address, relocate a branch a short distance, consolidate two branches, close an office, or leave the location open while changing hours and services. These events do not have identical notice requirements or customer impact.

- Whether the office is closing, relocating, consolidating, or only changing its hours or services.
- The confirmed effective date and whether there will be a temporary interruption.
- The replacement location, its opening date, hours, and available services.
- What happens to services tied to the old office, such as safe-deposit boxes, cashier’s checks, cash handling, notarization, or accessibility arrangements.
- Whether the information is a completed change or only a regulatory filing that is still pending.
A bank’s own notice is normally the best source for your account and the services you use. The FDIC and OCC databases are valuable independent checks, especially when an announcement is unclear or you are trying to verify a headquarters or branch event.

Headquarters and branch changes are not the same question
A headquarters or main-office filing concerns the institution’s official office location. A local branch change concerns the place where customers obtain services. A bank can have a headquarters relocation without changing the branch you use, while a branch can close or move with no change to the bank’s headquarters. Ask the bank which type of office is involved and search the matching category in the regulator databases.
Do not treat a legal-address update as proof that customer service has moved. The bank must tell you whether the public-facing office, account records, mail, or in-person services are affected. Conversely, a new branch-locator address may reflect an operational change before a structural record is visible.
Start with the bank’s own channels
Search the official website and branch locator
Use the bank’s full legal or consumer-facing name, not just a partial name. Similarly named institutions can be separate banks with different charters and branch networks. Open the official branch locator and search the complete street address. Look for labels such as “closing,” “relocating,” “temporarily closed,” “new location,” or revised hours.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Also check the bank’s news or service-alert pages. A branch locator may change before a formal announcement is easy to find, while a news page may explain a consolidation that is not obvious from the map. Check the locator again shortly before an announced move because hours and service lists can change during the transition.
Check the app, online banking, and mailed notices
Sign in to secure messages and alerts. Banks often send location-specific notices to customers who use a branch, hold a safe-deposit box, or live in the affected market. Review recent account statements and separate mailings as well. Save a copy or screenshot and record the date, because a later web-page update may remove the original wording.
Read the notice for the exact address, not merely the city or neighborhood. Note whether it says “proposed,” gives an effective date, identifies a destination branch, or describes only reduced hours. If the notice refers to a temporary interruption, record both the last day at the old office and the first day at the replacement.
Call or message the bank for a customer-specific answer
Ask the representative to check the exact address and give you a confirmed date rather than an estimated month. A useful script is:
“Is the office at [full address] closing, relocating, consolidating, or changing hours? What is the effective date? Which location replaces it, what services and hours will that location have, and what should I do about any safe-deposit box or transaction that requires an in-person visit?”

Ask whether the old office will operate normally until the effective date, whether there is a temporary interruption, and whether ATM access will remain available. If the change affects a service you cannot easily replace, explain the problem and ask for an alternative or accommodation.
Request a case number or secure-message confirmation when the answer is important. A written response helps resolve conflicts between a phone estimate, a posted notice, and a regulator record. Ask when to check again if the representative says the date is not final.
Use FDIC BankFind Suite to check structure changes
The FDIC’s BankFind Suite includes a Bank Structure Changes search. It can show main-office relocations, branch-office relocations, branch openings, and branch closings. This makes it the most direct public lookup for many structural events involving FDIC-supervised institutions.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Open BankFind Suite and choose Bank Structure Changes.
- Search for the exact institution. Add a date range broad enough to include the announcement and expected effective date.
- Review event types separately: Main Office Relocations, Branch Office Relocations, and Branch Office Closings are not interchangeable.
- Check whether the result uses an effective date or a processed date. An effective date describes when the structural change takes effect; a processed date describes when the record was handled in the system.
- Compare the address and institution identity with the bank’s notice. Do not assume a similar name means the same bank.
The two date fields answer different questions. A processed record may appear after an event was submitted or handled, while the effective date may be later. A record therefore does not, by itself, prove that a branch is open or closed today.
If your first search returns nothing, broaden the date range and try the institution’s current and former names. Then compare the result with the street address. A record for a different city, state, or similarly named bank is not evidence about your office.
Use the OCC Corporate Applications Search for OCC filings
The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency’s Corporate Applications Search (CAS) is a separate database for OCC applications and notices. It is useful when the bank is an OCC-chartered institution or when you want to inspect an OCC filing for a headquarters or branch location.
- Search by the bank’s name or OCC charter number.
- Choose the location type: Bank Headquarters for a headquarters filing or Branch Location for a branch filing.
- Filter the application type for Relocations or Branch Closings, as appropriate.
- Set a date range. CAS limits each date range to five years, so run more than one search for older records.
- Read the action and status, not just the filing title. A receipt means an application was filed; an approval is a regulatory decision; a consummated or effective action indicates that the transaction has reached completion.
OCC guidance says there can be a five-day delay between receipt of an application and its appearance in CAS. A missing result during that window does not establish that no change is planned. One filing can also appear at multiple stages, so do not count each status entry as a separate relocation or closure.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsKeep the filing stage separate from the customer timetable. An approved action may still have a future effective date, and a receipt is not approval. Ask the bank which date controls your ability to visit the office and whether the listed status has changed since the filing was posted.

| Best practice | Use the event record to verify that a structural change exists | Use the filing stage to determine whether the action is proposed, approved, or completed |
Neither database replaces a direct call to the bank. The bank can tell you whether the destination is open, whether a service has moved, and how customers should handle an immediate need. If one database lists an event and the other does not, that can reflect different charter coverage, date fields, or update timing rather than a contradiction.
Understand branch-closing notices and exceptions
The usual federal timing
Section 42 of the Federal Deposit Insurance Act generally requires customer notice by the beginning of the 90-day period before a proposed branch closing. The statute also calls for a conspicuous posting at the branch during at least the final 30 days before the closing. The FDIC’s consumer guidance, “Is Your Bank Branch Relocating or Closing?” (July 2024), describes the same basic timing: at least 90 days’ notice to customers and a visible posting for at least 30 days.
Look for the notice in a regular account statement or separate mailing, and look at the branch itself for the posted announcement. If you have not received instructions about a safe-deposit box, contact the bank rather than waiting for the closing date. Ask specifically how and when you can access the box, whether a new appointment is required, and where records will be maintained.
Why a move may have different treatment
The statute excludes certain relocations or consolidations within the immediate neighborhood when they do not substantially affect the nature of the business or the customers served. A nearby move can therefore follow different notice rules from a full branch closure. Do not assume every relocation receives exactly the same 90-day process.
The exception does not answer whether your own services remain available. Even for a nearby move, confirm transportation, accessibility, hours, ATM functions, and the handling of safe-deposit boxes directly with the bank.
A narrow 2025 FDIC filing detail
The FDIC’s December 16, 2025 final-rule summary says that, for institutions covered by that rule, a de minimis address change does not require a filing, although customers must be notified. It also says covered branch or main-office relocation filings must confirm that advance written customer notice was provided. The stated coverage is insured state nonmember banks and insured branches of foreign banks; these process details should not be generalized to every bank charter.
What to ask about the replacement office
A replacement branch may not offer the same services as the old one. Before the change takes effect, ask for the destination’s:
- Regular, Saturday, holiday, and drive-through hours.
- ATM availability and whether deposits, cash withdrawals, or other functions are supported.
- Cashier’s-check, coin, cash-order, wire-transfer, notary, and signature-guarantee capabilities, if you use them.
- Safe-deposit-box arrangements, including whether boxes move, remain at the old site temporarily, or require a scheduled visit.
- Accessibility features and a contact who can arrange assistance.
- Parking, public-transport access, and any appointment requirement.
The FDIC suggests comparing the destination branch’s hours and asking about alternatives such as mobile check deposit or ATM-fee waivers at another institution’s machine. Get any fee waiver or special arrangement in writing through secure messaging or email.

Plan around the service that prompted your visit. A branch may be open for routine deposits but unable to provide coin, large cash withdrawals, notarization, or a cashier’s check. If you need one of those services on a particular date, ask whether advance notice or an appointment is required.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When a search shows nothing
The filing may not be public yet
OCC CAS can lag receipt by five days. FDIC records also distinguish processed and effective dates, so an event can be absent from one date view while appearing in another. Search a wider date range and check both date types before concluding that no record exists.
The change may be too small or treated as a nearby move
A minor address correction, a move within the immediate neighborhood, or a consolidation that does not substantially change service may follow different filing or notice treatment. The absence of a matching record is not proof that the bank has no plan.
You may be checking the wrong institution
Verify the chartered bank name, not only the brand printed on a debit card. Confirm the street address, city, and state. If the institution has merged or changed names, ask the bank which current legal name and charter number to use in a regulator search.
The notice may describe hours, not a structural event
A branch can reduce hours, remove drive-through service, or stop a particular transaction without closing or relocating. Those operational changes may not appear as a relocation or closing record. The branch locator and customer-service team are the appropriate sources for current hours and services.
The record may describe a proposal rather than a completed move
Read the status and action fields carefully. A receipt or pending filing does not establish that the office has moved. Even an approval can precede the effective date. Use the bank’s confirmed customer timetable for deciding where to go.
A complete lookup workflow
- Identify the office. Write down the full bank name, branch address, city, state, and any office or branch number shown on a notice.
- Collect the bank’s information. Check the website, app, branch locator, secure messages, statements, and mailed notices. Save the dated notice.
- Ask direct questions. Confirm the type of change, effective date, replacement location, hours, temporary interruption, and affected services.
- Check FDIC BankFind Suite. Search Bank Structure Changes, review the relevant event category, and compare processed and effective dates.
- Check OCC CAS when relevant. Select Bank Headquarters or Branch Location, filter Relocations or Branch Closings, and interpret receipt, approval, and consummated/effective statuses.
- Reconcile differences. If a regulator record and the bank’s notice disagree, ask the bank which date controls customer access and when the public record is expected to update.
- Plan the service you actually need. Confirm safe-deposit-box instructions, cash and check services, ATM access, accessibility arrangements, and alternatives such as mobile deposit.
- Escalate an unresolved access problem. Explain the specific service you cannot obtain and request an accommodation or alternative. The FDIC says unresolved concerns about access to banking services may be communicated to the appropriate bank regulator.
For a planned visit, repeat the final confirmation close to the change date. Hours, appointment rules, and temporary closures can be different from the permanent relocation date. Keep the bank’s confirmation available in case staff at the destination need to verify the arrangement.

Keep a small record with the branch address, date you checked, notice text, representative’s name or case number, confirmed effective date, destination branch, and promised follow-up. Record whether the information came from the bank, FDIC, or OCC and whether it described a proposal or a completed event. This prevents confusion when a filing has several status entries or when a branch locator changes before the move occurs.
Best Value
Save screenshots of the regulator result showing the search filters and date basis. If the result later changes, you can show exactly what you saw and when. Do not rely on a search-result title alone; retain the status, address, and institution details that identify the event.
When to contact a regulator
Regulator databases are designed to show institutional filings and structure events, not to arrange your next in-person transaction. Contact the bank first, especially for a safe-deposit box, urgent cash need, accessibility issue, or fee dispute. If the bank does not resolve a material access problem, the FDIC consumer guidance says you may communicate the concern to the appropriate bank regulator. Use the regulator associated with the institution’s charter and describe the office, dates, service you need, and the response you received.
A regulator inquiry is most useful when you can provide a clear timeline: the notice date, the promised effective date, the attempts you made to obtain service, and the bank’s response. Keep the request focused on access and notice rather than assuming that a database entry alone proves a violation.

Frequently Asked Questions
How can I tell whether my bank’s headquarters is moving or only a branch?
Check the bank’s notice for the exact office and ask customer service to identify it as a main office, headquarters, or branch. In FDIC BankFind Suite, use Main Office Relocations for a main-office event; in OCC CAS, choose Bank Headquarters or Branch Location. Confirm whether customer-facing services are affected because a legal headquarters move may not change your local branch.
How much notice should I receive before a branch closes?
Federal guidance generally calls for customer notice by the beginning of the 90-day period before a proposed closing and a conspicuous posting during at least the final 30 days. Nearby relocations or consolidations may fall under an exception, so ask the bank which rule applies to your specific move.
Why can’t I find a branch move in OCC CAS?
OCC says received applications can take five days to become viewable. The filing may also use a different bank name or charter number, fall outside your five-year date range, or concern a nearby move or minor address change. Confirm the status and date directly with the bank.
What is the difference between a processed date and an effective date in FDIC BankFind?
The effective date indicates when the structural change takes effect. The processed date indicates when the record was handled in the system. Check both when searching; neither field alone tells you the branch’s current hours or service availability.
What should I do about a safe-deposit box when a branch moves?
Ask the bank where the box will be located, whether access requires an appointment, and what deadline applies. The FDIC advises customers who have not received instructions to contact the bank rather than wait for the closing date.
What if the bank and a regulator database show different dates?
Ask the bank which date controls customer access and whether the regulator record is a filing, approval, or completed action. Save both records and ask when the public database is expected to update.
The Bottom Line
Use the bank’s official notice, branch locator, app, and customer-service team for the answer that affects your next visit. Use FDIC BankFind Suite and OCC CAS to verify the institution, office type, filing stage, and dates—but remember that records can be delayed or describe a proposal. Before the change, confirm the replacement branch, hours, safe-deposit-box instructions, accessibility, and the exact service you need.
