Check the official docket or court calendar for your case, then review court notices sent by mail or through any registered electronic-notice account. A postponement request, the other side’s agreement, or an informal assurance does not by itself confirm a new date. Unless the court confirms a change, treat the scheduled hearing and existing deadlines as active and contact the court promptly if the status is unclear.
Procedures vary by court, jurisdiction, and case type. The steps below draw on official U.S. federal court guidance; use the court named on your hearing notice and follow its rules and instructions.

How to check whether your hearing date changed
- Identify the right case. Use the latest hearing notice to confirm the court, case number, case type, and scheduled date. Make sure you are checking the correct court and case.
- Check the official docket or calendar. Start at the court’s official website and look for the case docket or hearing calendar. The Central District of California’s FAQ for people without lawyers says the docket contains the most recent information about a case. Public access and the information displayed vary by court.
- Review court notices. Check your mail and any electronic filing or court-notice account you registered. The same Central District FAQ says court-generated forms and orders are mailed to people who have not signed up for electronic notice.
- Look for official confirmation. Check for an order, updated hearing notice, docket entry, or other official communication that states the new date or confirms cancellation. A filed request or tentative indication is not necessarily a final change. For example, the Central District of California Bankruptcy Court’s continuance guidance says a hearing is not continued until the court approves the request and notifies the parties by entering an order and/or posting a tentative ruling.
- Contact the court if the status is not clear. Use the phone number on your notice or the contact information on the court’s official website. Give the case number and hearing date; ask whether the hearing remains on calendar, how a change will be confirmed, and whether any other deadlines are affected.
- Save the confirmation. Keep the order, notice, docket details, or other official confirmation. Update your calendar once you know the court’s status.
If you have not received confirmation
Do not assume the hearing has been postponed because you filed a request, the other side agreed, or someone said it might be rescheduled. The Northern District of California’s Request to Change the Date of a Hearing packet, updated November 2024, advises: “If you do not hear from the Court, then assume that the hearing date has not changed, and you need to follow the original deadline.” That is guidance from that court; check the rules and instructions for your own court as well.

Specific federal traffic-court guidance illustrates why guessing can be risky, but does not establish a universal consequence for missing a hearing. The Eastern District of California’s Redding CVB page says a person is not excused from the original date until they receive notice of the continued date. The District of Arizona’s CVB hearing page warns that failure to appear may result in a warrant. If you are unsure, promptly verify the status with the court rather than relying on an unconfirmed assumption.

If you need to ask for a postponement
Use the procedure for your specific court and case type. A request does not guarantee that the hearing will move, and deadlines and permitted contact methods differ. For instance, the Central District of California’s violation-notice instructions allow a phone call to the listed number or a written request to the court; a written request must arrive at least one week before the scheduled date. That timing applies to the cited process, not as a general rule for other courts.
For a separate example, the District of Arizona says on its CVB hearing page that staff will notify an applicant by email if a continuance is granted and provide the new date. Follow the instructions given by your own court, and keep checking for the court’s decision.

After the court confirms a change
- Record the new date and time, courthouse or remote-appearance method, and where the confirmation came from.
- Read the order or notice for any changed filing, service, or appearance requirements.
- Ask specifically whether other deadlines moved. The Central District of California Bankruptcy Court notes that some deadlines may be extended in some instances, while the Northern District of California’s civil local rules say continuing a motion hearing does not extend opposition or reply deadlines unless the court orders otherwise. The effect depends on the applicable rules and order.
- Keep checking the docket and court communications for later updates.
- If you have a lawyer, promptly share the notice with them. If you are unrepresented and do not understand the procedure or possible consequences, consult the court’s official self-help resources or seek qualified legal assistance.
