How to Find Out Whether a Book Is Banned in Your State or School District

Start with PEN America’s Index of School Book Bans: search the title, then check the district and statewide indices. Treat a listing as a documented lead, not proof that the book is currently unavailable at a particular school. For a current answer, verify the district’s catalog, review records, board materials, policy, or ask library staff.

Search by title, then by district

  1. Look up the book title. PEN America’s 2024–2025 index offers searchable lists by book title, school district, and statewide bans. Note the school year and the status associated with any result. Open the index.
  2. Search the district index separately. A district-level result can provide local information that a title search or statewide listing does not settle. PEN America’s data may include districts where specific titles were not publicly identified, but removals or official acknowledgement were documented. Check the district index.
  3. Read what the entry counts. PEN America says its index records “decisions to limit or diminish access to books, not instances where books are challenged.” A request for review, temporary hold, restricted access, and final removal can represent different outcomes. Check the status rather than treating every mention as a completed removal. Read the index’s scope.

Confirm the current status locally

A national index is not a live catalog for every school. Find the school district’s library selection and reconsideration policies, challenge forms, review committee decisions, and school board agendas or minutes. Then check the current library catalog or contact the school librarian or district library office.

Ask specifically whether the title is available at the school and whether access is limited by grade, campus, or review status. If the district has published a decision, check its date and whether the decision applies districtwide or only to certain schools.

  • Catalog: Does the title appear as available, checked out, restricted, or absent?
  • Review records: Was there a challenge, and did the review result in a restriction, removal, or no change?
  • Policy and board records: What process was followed, what decision was made, and when?
  • Library staff: Is the book accessible to the student or grade level you are asking about now?

Check dates and geography before calling it a ban

PEN America’s entries refer to a school year, so they are historical reporting rather than a real-time statement of availability. Local decisions can change. A statewide entry also does not prove that every district held the book or implemented the restriction in the same way; PEN America notes that it cannot verify every district held each title subject to a statewide ban. Compare the state, district, and school scope, as well as the entry date and current local records. PEN America’s index and scope notes.

When two sources appear to disagree, compare what each one is measuring:

  • Geography: State, district, or individual school.
  • Time: School year covered and date the local information was last checked.
  • Unit: A challenge, an action, a title, or an instance of a ban.
  • Status: Under review, temporarily restricted, removed, or restored.
  • Access: Whether the decision affects everyone or only a grade, campus, or location.
  • Method: Whether the source records reported censorship attempts or documented access restrictions.

Use ALA as a separate, complementary source

The American Library Association’s censorship reporting can help identify reported attempts, but it is not a duplicate of PEN America’s school-ban index. ALA gathers reports from library workers and news coverage and uses different counting rules. It says policy-based weeding is not a ban, and it does not classify temporary reduced access during a review as a ban. See ALA’s library censorship data and methodology.

The figures from the two organizations therefore answer different questions. PEN America counted 6,870 instances of school book bans across 23 states and 87 public school districts during the 2024–2025 school year; this is a count of instances under its methodology, not a count of unique titles or a current status check for one school. ALA reported 5,668 books banned from libraries in 2025; its classifications exclude some policy-based weeding and temporary review-related access changes. Do not combine or compare these figures as if they measured the same thing. PEN America; ALA.

Record what you checked

For a useful answer you can revisit, write down the title, school or district, source, school year or decision date, and access status. Include the date you checked the local catalog or contacted staff. If you are asking “Is this book banned in my state?” remember that a statewide entry may not tell you whether a specific school owns the book or how local access works.
