Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Open Settings > Storage on your Pixel, then tap a category to see what is consuming space. For an item-by-item view, use Settings > Storage > Free up space > Browse, or open the Files app and sort a category by size. The labels and available options can differ by Pixel model, Android version, and locale.
Storage and memory are different
Storage is the permanent space where your Pixel keeps photos, videos, music, downloads, apps, and app data. Memory (RAM) is the working space Android and running apps use while the phone is on. Closing apps may affect memory, but it does not identify or remove files from storage.

Use the Storage screen when your concern is a nearly full phone, failed downloads, or not knowing which category is taking space. Google says a Pixel can have issues when less than 10% of its storage is available. That is a troubleshooting guideline, not a guarantee that every phone below that level will fail or that every problem above it is caused by storage.
Start with the built-in storage breakdown
- Open the Settings app.
- Tap Storage.
- Tap any category in the breakdown to inspect it.
This is Google’s direct route for seeing what is using storage. The screen normally separates broad types of content, such as apps, photos and videos, downloaded files, and other app-related data. The exact names and order can change with Android releases and device configuration, so follow the labels shown on your Pixel rather than looking for an identical screenshot.

Read the free-space figure before deleting anything. If the phone is close to full, start with categories containing personal media or downloads you can verify. Do not assume that every category can be deleted wholesale: some entries are required by apps or Android.
Which inspection route should you use?
| Route | Best for | What it shows | Version or device notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Settings > Storage > category | Quick diagnosis | A category-level view with additional details when you tap an entry | Google’s standard first step; labels can vary |
| Settings > Storage > Free up space > Browse | Finding files beyond the summary | A browsable list of files that are using space | Use the option if it appears on your Pixel |
| Files app > category > sort | Locating individual large files | Category contents sorted by name, date, or size | Some steps vary by device; some Files features require Android 14 or later |
For a simple answer, use Settings. For a large-video or download hunt, Browse or the Files app is usually more useful because it exposes individual items rather than only a total for a category.
Drill down to individual files
Use Browse from Storage
- Open Settings.
- Tap Storage.
- Tap Free up space.
- Tap Browse.
Browse takes you from the storage summary to files that occupy space. Review the location and filename before removing anything. A file that looks like a duplicate may be an original used by another app, and a downloaded item may be available offline for a reason.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Sort in the Files app
- Open the Files app.
- Choose a category.
- Open the sort control and choose Size to put the largest items where you can evaluate them first.
Files can also sort by name or date. Sorting by size is the fastest way to find a few large videos, archives, or downloads that account for a disproportionate share of used space. If your menus differ, look for the category and sort controls in the Files app version installed on your Pixel. Google notes that some of these steps vary by device and that certain options require Android 14 or later.
What the categories usually mean
Photos and videos
Camera recordings and imported media can grow quickly. If a photo or video is backed up, Google’s cleanup guidance includes removing the phone copy while keeping the backed-up version available in your account. Verify that the backup has completed and that you can view the item from your account before deleting the local copy. A cloud copy is not the same as an unverified upload.

Be especially careful with videos recorded recently, edited originals, and items in a device folder that is not included in your normal backup settings. The Storage screen tells you how much space the category uses; it does not by itself prove that every item is safely backed up.
Downloads and downloaded media
Downloaded files may include documents, installers, images, audio, and offline video. Review them in Browse or Files and remove only items you recognize. Media downloaded inside another app may not appear as an ordinary file that you should delete from a top-level folder. In that case, use the app’s own downloads or offline-content controls so the app can update its index correctly.
Apps and app data
An app’s footprint can include the application itself plus data it created, such as offline maps, downloaded episodes, drafts, databases, and account information. Tap an app category or entry to identify unusually large apps, then check the app’s own settings for a way to remove optional downloads.
Uninstalling an unused app removes the app and generally removes its local data. Before uninstalling, confirm that anything important is synced or exported and that you know how to reinstall and sign in again.
Other files and system-related space
Some space is used by Android, system updates, temporary files, or data that does not fit neatly into a personal category. Do not treat an “other” or system-like total as a list of files that can be safely erased. Use the detail screen and the cleanup actions Android presents; avoid deleting unfamiliar folders manually.

Free space without losing something important
Choose an action based on three questions: Is the content backed up? Is it managed inside another app? Can you restore it if you change your mind?
Recommended Free Tools
- Backed-up photos and videos: Remove the phone copies only after confirming the backup.
- Downloads: Delete files you can identify as no longer needed, especially large installers or duplicate documents.
- Unused apps: Uninstall apps you no longer use, after checking for unsynced drafts or local-only data.
- Files you want to keep: Copy them to a computer or upload them to your Google Account before deleting the phone copies.
- Offline media: Remove it from the app that downloaded it when possible, rather than deleting an opaque folder in Files.
After a deletion, return to Settings > Storage and allow the totals to refresh. A category may not change immediately while Android finishes indexing or an app completes its own cleanup.
Clear cache without confusing it with app storage
Cache and app storage have different consequences.
| Action | What it removes | What can happen next | Use it when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Clear cache | Temporary data kept by the app | The app may be slower the next time it opens while temporary data is recreated | You need to remove temporary files and understand the app’s behavior |
| Clear storage | All data stored for that app | Local settings, sign-in state, downloads, and other app data can be permanently deleted | Only after checking the app-specific consequences and trying safer in-app deletion first |
Google’s wording is explicit: “Clear storage: Permanently deletes all app data. Try to delete the data within the app first.” Treat that as a warning, not as a routine storage shortcut. If the app has its own control for removing downloads, drafts, or history, use that control before Android’s Clear storage command. Clearing cache is less destructive, but it is not a way to remove a large personal video or an offline library that the app deliberately manages.
Copy files off the Pixel before deleting them
USB transfer to a computer
A cable is optional for diagnosing storage, but it is useful when you want a local copy on a computer. Google’s transfer procedure is:
- Unlock the Pixel.
- Connect it to the computer with a USB cable.
- On the Pixel, tap the notification labeled Charging this device via USB.
- Select File transfer.
- Copy the files you want to keep to the computer.
- Open a few copied files on the computer to verify them before deleting the phone copies.
Not every USB cable transfers data; some are intended only for charging. If the USB notification does not offer File transfer, try a known data-capable cable, unlock the phone again, and reconnect it. The exact computer prompts depend on the computer’s operating system.

Do not erase the phone copy until the transfer has finished and you have checked that the destination contains the expected folders and files. Copying is not the same as moving: keep the original until you have verified the copy.
Upload to your Google Account
Google also documents uploading files to a Google Account as an off-device route. This can avoid a cable and computer, but it depends on an internet connection and enough account storage. Check that the upload is complete and that the files open from the account before removing local copies. The instructions establish the upload option; they do not make paid storage necessary for every user.

You see a category total but not the files
Use Settings > Storage > Free up space > Browse. If Browse is absent, open Files, choose a category, and sort by size. Android version and device differences can change which route is available, so use whichever of these controls your Pixel displays.
A large download is not visible in Files
Look in the app that downloaded it. Offline music, video, maps, podcasts, and similar content may be indexed and removed only through that app. Deleting a visible cache or unrelated folder may not remove the managed download and can create app errors.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

The free-space number barely changes
Recheck the category after the deletion and give Android time to update its index. Confirm that you deleted the local copy, not only a shortcut or a cloud listing. If the space was occupied by app-managed content, complete the removal inside that app and then revisit Storage.

The phone is nearly full and behaving erratically
Check the free-space indicator first. Google says a Pixel can have issues when less than 10% of storage is available. Use Browse or Files to remove a few clearly identified large items, or copy them off the phone, then check Storage again. Do not begin by clearing storage for random apps; that can destroy data without addressing the largest category.
USB transfer does not appear
- Unlock the Pixel before connecting or reconnecting it.
- Tap Charging this device via USB when the notification appears.
- Select File transfer, not a charging-only mode.
- Try another cable that is confirmed to carry data; Google warns that not all USB cables do.
If the computer still cannot see the phone, use the Google Account upload route or inspect and delete files directly on the Pixel instead of treating a cable as a requirement.
A safe decision sequence
- Measure: Open Settings > Storage and note the free-space figure and largest categories.
- Inspect: Tap the largest relevant category, then use Browse or Files if you need individual filenames.
- Classify: Decide whether each large item is a personal file, an app-managed download, a cache, or data you still need.
- Protect: Confirm a backup or make a computer/account copy for anything irreplaceable.
- Remove: Delete verified downloads, backed-up local media, or unused apps; use an app’s own cleanup control for app-managed content.
- Recheck: Return to Storage and confirm that the free-space figure has improved.
This sequence keeps diagnosis separate from deletion. It also prevents the most common mistake: using a destructive app-storage command when a large video, download, or offline library is the real cause.
What you can and cannot conclude from the numbers
The Storage screen tells you how Android has classified space at that moment. It does not establish that a category is disposable, that a cloud backup exists, or that deleting cache will solve a performance issue. Category labels can change across Android versions, and Google’s help pages note that some storage and Files instructions apply only to certain versions, including Android 11 or later for some storage help and Android 14 or later for some Files steps.
Use the 10% guidance as a reason to create breathing room, not as a diagnostic law. A Pixel above that level can still have a misbehaving app or a failed transfer, while a phone below it may continue working normally for a time.
Quick Recap
