How to Find Other Anime and Games by the Creator of Your Favorite Sci-Fi Action Series

Start with the series’ official credits, then follow the credited person’s exact role through an official portfolio or studio profile. “Creator” can mean original-work author, director, writer, character designer, or mechanical designer—and those roles do not make someone the sole author of every project they join.

Start with the credits for the series you like

Check the series’ official website, staff page, end credits, or official release materials. Write down the person’s name and the precise credit attached to it. A label such as “original creator” signals a different contribution from “director,” “series composition,” “writer,” or “mechanical design.”

That distinction matters in collaborative anime production. The Japan Agency for Cultural Affairs’ animation guide discusses contributions to The Super Dimension Fortress Macross separately, including Shoji Kawamori’s Valkyrie design and Noboru Ishiguro’s direction. Sharing a series credit does not mean two people did the same work.

Trace that person’s work by role and medium

  1. Search for an authoritative profile. Pair the name with a role-aware phrase such as “official works” or “filmography,” or search the studio or production company. Prefer the creator’s own portfolio or a studio, rights-holder, or distributor page.
  2. Sort the results by medium. Look for separate categories such as television anime, films, games, design work, and books. A cross-medium profile can reveal relevant work that a series-only search misses.
  3. Read the credit next to each title. Separate original-work or creator credits from directing, writing, design, and supervision. Do not infer a larger role from a brief listing.
  4. Confirm the candidate title’s credit. Open its official page or release materials and verify what the person did. A portfolio entry establishes involvement, not necessarily sole authorship.
  5. Check whether you can access it. Credits establish participation and format, not current streaming, retail, or regional availability. Verify access for your country separately.

Use the credit—not just the shared name—to judge a match

Consider the credited role first, then the medium and format, genre or tone, and your own access to the title. A shared creator can be a useful lead, but it cannot guarantee that another work will feel like your favorite series. A game-design contribution, for example, may interest you for a different reason than an anime the same person directed.

Examples: following Shoji Kawamori and Sunao Katabuchi

Shoji Kawamori: anime, films, and games

Kawamori’s official portfolio groups credits by medium and identifies his role. It lists him as original creator and director for The Super Dimension Fortress Macross and Genesis of Aquarion. Other anime entries credit him with mechanical design, a distinct contribution rather than direction.

The game entries show why checking the exact wording matters: the portfolio lists mechanical concept design for DAEMON X MACHINA and Devil Breaker design for Devil May Cry 5. Those credits connect him to the games, but do not describe him as their director or creator.

Sunao Katabuchi: anime and game writing

Contrail’s official creator profile lists Katabuchi’s television work on Black Lagoon and game credits for the Ace Combat series: director and writer on Ace Combat 04: Shattered Skies, writer on Ace Combat 5: The Unsung War, and writer on Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown. These are meaningful game credits, but they are not interchangeable with an anime directing credit.

Compare candidates without overstating the connection

Once you have several possibilities, organize them by title, medium, credited role, connection to your favorite, and availability in your region. The role column should lead: it shows most clearly how the person contributed. Describe genre or tone separately, and avoid treating a shared credit as proof that the works are alike.

For instance, Kawamori’s original-creator/director credit on Macross and his mechanical concept design credit on DAEMON X MACHINA are both worth following, but they represent different kinds of work in different media. The credits alone do not establish that the game will resemble the anime in story or tone.

When an official profile does not settle the question

Official portfolios and studio profiles are strong sources for the roles they publish, but a profile may omit credits. If a title matters to your decision, check its official credits as well. If no authoritative source clarifies a person’s contribution, describe the connection narrowly or leave the title out rather than calling it “by” that person without qualification.
