1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesTo find an old website, open the Wayback Machine, enter the most exact URL you know, choose a year with captures, then select a highlighted date and time. A domain search is useful for discovering a site; an exact page URL is the reliable way to check whether a particular article, product page or file was archived.
How do I find an old website in the Wayback Machine?
- Open the Wayback Machine. Go to web.archive.org.
- Enter a URL. Use the old page’s complete address if you have it. Otherwise enter the site’s domain, such as example.com, to view the site’s capture history. The Internet Archive’s search guidance also describes choosing “Search archived websites” from the archive.org search dropdown when starting from its general search field.
- Choose a year. The timeline shows years in which the archive has captures for that URL. Select the year closest to the version you need.
- Choose a date and time. In the calendar, click a highlighted date and then a listed capture time. The Wayback Machine opens the archived snapshot, not the current live page.
- Verify the result. Check the address shown in the Wayback banner, the capture timestamp and the page’s visible content. An archived response can exist without containing every image, script or interactive function.
Domain search versus an exact page search
Use a domain when you are exploring
A domain search gives you a map of what the archive knows about a site and can reveal older homepages, navigation links and URL patterns. It is a starting point rather than proof that every page on the site was saved.
Use the exact URL when you need one page
For a deep page, paste its complete historical URL directly into Wayback. A homepage can have many captures while a linked article, image or download has none. If the old page used a different path, try only plausible variants: an http versus https address, a www versus non-www host, or a known older directory structure. Do not assume a similar-looking URL is the same page.
Follow archived links
Once a snapshot opens, links that were captured may lead to related archived pages. If a link fails, copy its destination and search that URL separately. Individual image and file URLs can also be checked directly.

How to read the capture calendar
The calendar records capture dates and times, so select a snapshot that matches the period you are researching. The Internet Archive describes these status colors as:
| Color | Meaning described by the Internet Archive | What it does not guarantee |
|---|---|---|
| Blue | Crawler received a 2xx response | That every page asset was saved |
| Green | Crawler received a 3xx redirect | That the redirect leads to the version you expected |
| Orange | Crawler received a 4xx response | That no useful content is present |
| Red | Crawler received a 5xx response | That another capture does not work |
A color describes the crawler’s response at capture time; it is not a completeness rating. Open more than one capture when the first result is incomplete or redirected.
Can I see what a website looked like years ago?
Usually, yes, if the site or page was captured during that period. Select a capture from the desired year and inspect the rendered snapshot. For a defensible historical reference, record the exact archived URL and timestamp rather than citing only the site’s domain.
Expect differences from the original live site
- Images, stylesheets, fonts or videos may be missing because external assets were not captured.
- JavaScript applications may not run correctly in an archived copy.
- Forms, logins, shopping carts, searches and other functions that require the origin server can fail.
- Server-side image maps and similar components may depend on resources that are no longer available.
The visible page is therefore evidence of what the archive reconstructed, not a guarantee of a pixel-perfect or fully functional copy of the original.

Can I search the text of archived pages?
Not through Wayback’s Site Search in the way you would use a full-text search engine. The Internet Archive says Site Search is built from terms associated with links to site homepages and capture/link signals; it is intended to help locate sites, not to index all text inside every archived page. Search the likely URL first, then use the page’s own archived navigation or your browser’s find command after opening a snapshot.
A practical discovery sequence
- Search the domain to find a known homepage capture.
- Open a snapshot from the approximate year.
- Follow archived navigation to discover the site’s URL structure.
- Search each important deep URL directly.
- Check linked images or downloads as separate URLs if they matter to your evidence.
Why is a page missing from the Wayback Machine?
“No capture” means the page was not found in the archive; it does not prove that the page never existed. Common causes include:
- Crawlers never discovered an orphan page or could not reach it through links.
- The page was behind a password, form, paywall or other access restriction.
robots.txtor another site rule blocked crawling at the relevant time.- The server was unavailable, returned an error or required a live function the crawler could not use.
- The owner requested exclusion from the archive.
What to try next
- Search the exact URL, including older protocol, host and path variants that fit the site’s known structure.
- Open nearby captures and inspect their links for an earlier or renamed path.
- Check individual image, document and script URLs directly.
- Look for a dated link to the page in other archived pages, then search that destination.
These steps can find an overlooked capture, but they cannot create one retroactively.
What is Save Page Now, and what can it do?
Save Page Now makes a one-time capture of a specified page. It is useful when you need to preserve a page that is currently available, but it does not enroll the URL in future crawls and does not capture multiple pages, a directory or an entire site. Save the resulting archived URL immediately if you need to share or cite it.

| Question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Is the timestamp close to the event you are documenting? | A page can change substantially between captures. |
| Is the exact URL correct? | A domain-level result may represent a different page or redirect. |
| Are key assets visible? | Missing images, CSS or scripts can change meaning or layout. |
| Do important links work? | Linked evidence may require its own archived capture. |
| Is the page interactive? | Live-server functions often cannot operate in an archive. |
For research notes, retain the capture date and time, archived URL, original URL and a description of missing assets or broken functions.
Troubleshooting common Wayback problems
The homepage loads, but the article does not
Search the article’s exact URL rather than relying on the homepage’s capture. Try a plausible older path or host variant, then inspect archived navigation for renamed URLs.
The page opens with a blank layout or missing pictures
Check whether the assets came from another host, depended on JavaScript, or were generated by a live server. Search the asset URL separately. If no asset capture exists, the archived page may not be reconstructable.
A capture redirects somewhere unexpected
Open another timestamp and compare the original URL shown in the Wayback banner. A green redirect capture records the crawler’s redirect response, not necessarily the historical page you intended.

Confirm the URL spelling, protocol and host. Then search the domain, follow any known archived links and retry the exact destination. If all variants have no captures, report the page as not found in the archive rather than as proven nonexistent.
A form, search box or login does nothing
That behavior is expected for functions requiring the origin server, a session or a current database. Use the archived page as a historical record of its captured content, not as a replacement for the live application.
Or skip the browser setup
If your goal is to capture a page that exists now rather than retrieve an historical archive, ScreenshotNeo returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF from one API request. It removes cookie-consent banners, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture; bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients.
See the complete option list and parameter reference in the ScreenshotNeo documentation.

Does the Wayback Machine archive every website?
No. Coverage depends on discovery, access, crawl rules and whether the owner requested exclusion.
Can I recover a page that was never captured?
No. You can search URL variants and linked assets, but Save Page Now cannot reconstruct an earlier missing version.
Is a blue calendar marker proof that the page is complete?
No. It indicates a 2xx crawler response; assets and interactive behavior may still be absent.
Can I use an archived page as a working website?
Only for the portions that were captured and replay successfully. Functions requiring the original server commonly fail.
