Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →To find an old website screenshot, enter the page’s exact URL in the Internet Archive Wayback Machine, open its capture history, and choose a date. If there is no capture for that address, try the site’s domain or search the UK Government Web Archive. An archived page is not necessarily a complete screenshot: images, scripts, and interactive features may be missing or may behave differently from the original.
Find a page in the Wayback Machine
- Open the Wayback Machine and enter the exact URL of the page you want to see. Include its path, such as example.com/about, rather than searching only for the homepage. If you do not know the precise address, start with the site’s domain.
- Choose Browse History to view available captures.
- Select a year, then choose a marked date to open a capture. If you are investigating a particular redesign or change, inspect captures around the date in question; the earliest or latest available copy may not show when the change happened.
- Check the address displayed in the archived view and the capture date. Confirm that the archive opened the page you meant to investigate, rather than a redirect or a different URL.
A marked date means a capture is available; it does not mean the site was recorded every day or that every part of the page was preserved.
Understand the capture timeline and status colors
The timeline and calendar show when the archive recorded a response. The capture’s status color gives a clue about what the server returned:
- Blue: a 2xx response.
- Green: a 3xx redirect.
- Orange: a 4xx client error.
- Red: a 5xx server error.
A color is evidence about the response associated with that capture, not proof that the archived page will replay completely. For a claim about what a site looked like, open the capture and inspect the visible result rather than relying on the calendar alone.

If the exact page has no capture
Try the domain or another URL form
Search for the site’s homepage or domain if the deep link produces no results. If you know an older or alternate form of the address, try it too—for example, a version with or without www, or a different path. A missing result for one URL does not establish that the page never existed; it may have been saved under another address or not captured.
Search the UK Government Web Archive
The UK Government Web Archive provides archived-site lookup. Its search can be refined using combinations of phrases and individual words. This may help when a page is absent from the Wayback Machine or when you do not know its exact URL.
Do not treat absence as proof
Archives have gaps. A site may prohibit crawling, a capture may fail because of its SSL settings, or the page may simply not have been recorded. A search with no result means you have not found a capture there; it does not prove the page was never online.

How complete is an archived website screenshot?
The Wayback Machine is an archive service for visiting earlier versions of websites, as the Internet Archive Help Center explains in Wayback Machine General Information. But a replayed page is not necessarily a pixel-perfect screenshot or a complete copy of the original site. Some pages are broken or absent, and images, stylesheets, scripts, fonts, or embedded content may not have been saved.

The Internet Archive also warns that, with JavaScript disabled, some images and links may come from the live web. That matters when you are using an archived page as historical evidence: an image visible in the replay may not itself be an archived image. Treat what you see as the archive’s replay of material retrieved at that time, and check whether important visual elements appear to belong to the archived capture.
Interactive elements can be especially unreliable. A menu, form, video, or dynamically loaded section may not behave as it did on the original live site. If your purpose is to establish wording or appearance, record what is visibly present and avoid claiming that the replay is a complete or faithful screenshot unless the evidence supports that description.

Compare captures when researching a change
When more than one capture is available, evaluate each on the same points before drawing a conclusion:
- Date: How close is the capture to the event or change you are investigating? A capture only establishes what the archive recorded on that date.
- Address and redirects: Does the archived URL match the page in question? Did it redirect, and does the resulting page still match the intended target?
- Visible content and assets: Are the relevant text, images, and other visual elements present? If a key image or section is missing, the capture may not support a claim about it.
- Replay behavior: Is the page usable, partly replayed, or visibly broken? Separate what can be read from what the archive could not reproduce.
- Timestamp precision: Is the capture date precise enough for the statement you want to make? Do not infer an exact launch or removal date from two captures that merely bracket a change.
For example, if one capture shows an older headline and a later capture shows a replacement, you can say the archive has those versions on those dates. Unless the available timestamps provide stronger evidence, do not claim the change happened on a particular day between them.

If you want to preserve a page for future reference, use the Internet Archive’s Save Page Now feature. Enter the page URL; the service returns a permanent URL for the resulting capture. This preserves a page going forward—it cannot create a historical capture from before the save.
Rank #4
Save Page Now’s documented workflow saves the single page you enter, not the entire website. Some sites prohibit crawling, and certain SSL settings can cause a capture to fail. If the save does not work, try a suitable page URL and check whether the site’s access restrictions or connection settings may be preventing capture.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need a screenshot of a page as it appears now—not an old archived version—ScreenshotNeo can return an image or PDF from one GET request. Its capture flow accepts consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before the shot; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. ScreenshotNeo also provides an MCP server with screenshot, page-info, and PDF tools for AI agents.
For a current-page capture, cURL example:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for options and account setup. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for 1,000 free screenshots a month, with no card required.
Troubleshooting common problems
| Problem | Likely explanation | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| No captures appear for the page | The exact URL may not have been archived, or the page may be recorded under a different address. | Search the domain or homepage, try another known URL form, then check the UK Government Web Archive. |
| The archived page is broken or incomplete | Some resources may be absent, or the archive may not replay the page’s scripts and interactive behavior. | Check another capture date and assess the visible text and assets separately. Do not assume missing elements were absent from the original site. |
| The page shows a redirect or error color | The archived response may have redirected or returned an HTTP error class. | Verify the displayed URL and open nearby captures. A 3xx redirect or 4xx/5xx response does not by itself establish what a fully loaded page looked like. |
| Save Page Now fails | The site may prohibit crawling, or an SSL setting may prevent capture. | Check the page address and try again if appropriate. Remember that this tool saves one submitted page, not the whole site. |
| An image or link may be from the live web | Some replay behavior can use live-web material, including when JavaScript is disabled. | Be cautious about treating that element as historical evidence; corroborate it with another archived capture if possible. |
Use an old capture as evidence carefully
Keep the capture URL and date with your notes, and state what the archive actually shows. Distinguish an archived page from a standalone screenshot, note redirects or missing assets that affect your point, and avoid treating gaps between captures as proof of an exact change date. If you need a preservation copy of a page you can access now, Save Page Now is prospective; if you need an image of a current live page, use a screenshot tool rather than assuming an archive replay is a complete record.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I find a website screenshot from a specific day?
Only if an archive has a capture from that date. A nearby capture may help establish what the archive recorded, but it does not prove the page looked the same on every intervening day.
Does Save Page Now recover an old version of a page?
No. It creates a capture of a page submitted now; it cannot retroactively produce a capture from an earlier date.
Can an archived page prove that a website never existed?
No. A missing archive result is not proof that a page never existed; it may not have been captured or may be filed under another URL.
