For a current bushfire warning, use the official emergency or fire-service authority for the state or territory where the fire is occurring. Open the incident’s action statement, follow its direction immediately, and check the authority’s live map or incident list for evacuation routes, road closures and centres. The Australian Warning System gives every jurisdiction the same three labels—Advice, Watch and Act, and Emergency Warning—but only the local authority has the incident-specific detail.

Do not wait for a warning if you can see danger or believe you are at risk. Fires can move faster than warning systems, communications can fail, and an alert may not reach every device. Call Triple Zero (000) when a life is in danger.

Where to get a trustworthy warning first

Start with the jurisdiction in which the fire is burning, not a generic national search result or a social-media post. Safe Work Australia explains that bushfire warnings continue to be issued by the state or territory emergency service or local fire authority. Its source list covers the Australian Capital Territory, New South Wales, the Northern Territory, Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania, Victoria and Western Australia.

  1. Identify the state or territory. Use the authority responsible for the address, town or travel route at risk.
  2. Open its official warning page, app, map or incident list. Search for the authority’s current website or app by name, rather than clicking an unverified repost.
  3. Open the individual incident. Read the time of the update, the warning level and the complete action statement.
  4. Check evacuation information in the same official channel. Confirm which roads, assembly points, relief centres or destinations are currently open; these can change during the event.
  5. Keep monitoring. A warning can be upgraded, downgraded or replaced as the fire and weather change.

A national warning framework does not replace local incident information. A national page may explain the warning colours, but it cannot tell you which road is safe or whether a particular evacuation centre is open.

What the three Australian Warning System levels mean

The Australian Warning System uses consistent colours and labels for hazards, including bushfires. The label is a prompt to read the incident’s action statement, not a substitute for it.

Level Colour What it generally indicates What you should do
Advice Yellow An incident is occurring, but there is no immediate danger to you identified in the warning. Stay informed, check conditions and prepare to act if the message changes.
Watch and Act Orange The threat has heightened or conditions are changing. Start taking protective action now. Prepare to leave or shelter according to the action statement.
Emergency Warning Red Danger may be imminent or is already affecting the warning area. Take immediate action. Follow the stated evacuation or shelter direction without delay.

New South Wales guidance describes Advice as a reason to stay up to date, Watch and Act as the point at which action should begin, and Emergency Warning as a direction to act immediately. The exact instruction can differ by location, fire behaviour and the options available. Always read the message attached to the level.

How to read an incident warning

An alert should answer five practical questions: what is happening, where it is happening, how serious it is, what you must do and who issued it. Check the publication or update time before relying on it.

Find the action statement

The action statement is the operational part of the warning. It may tell residents to leave immediately, leave while roads remain open, move to a named location, shelter in a solid building or monitor conditions. Do not infer a safe response from the colour alone; two fires at the same level can have different instructions.

Confirm the affected area

Read the listed suburbs, towns, roads or map boundary. A warning that is nearby is not automatically a warning for your exact address, and a fire outside your suburb can still cut roads or produce smoke that affects your route.

Check the update time and changes

Warnings are live information. Reopen the incident after a major weather change, a new fire-front report or an evacuation announcement. Screenshots and cached pages can be out of date.

Finding evacuation routes, centres and road information

Use the authority’s live incident map or listing for evacuation detail. Victoria, for example, aligns evacuation actions with the warning levels and represents evacuation information on the VicEmergency map and incident list. Other jurisdictions use different names and interfaces, so do not assume that a Victorian tool, app or map applies nationally.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Routes: Follow the route named by the current incident message. Do not choose an unfamiliar shortcut because a map application shows it as faster.
  • Road status: Check the official incident or road-status information immediately before leaving. Roads can close because of fire, smoke, fallen trees, emergency operations or traffic controls.
  • Evacuation centres: Verify that the centre is open and accepting people before travelling. The listed location can change as conditions develop.
  • Pets, livestock and medication: Include them in your departure plan. Waiting to collect essentials after an evacuation direction can put you in greater danger.

Never rely on an old article, an unverified map pin or a social post for a current evacuation decision. If the official page and a repost disagree, use the current official authority message.

State and territory channels: choosing the right authority

The responsible service depends entirely on where the fire is. Safe Work Australia’s state-and-territory source list is a useful starting point when you are unsure which authority covers a location. Once you identify the jurisdiction, use that authority’s own warning map, incident list, app or alert page.

Location Correct starting point What to verify
Australian Capital Territory The ACT emergency or fire authority listed by Safe Work Australia Current incident level, affected suburbs and any evacuation direction
New South Wales The NSW emergency and fire-warning service Action statement, local ABC updates and any road or centre changes
Northern Territory The NT emergency or fire authority listed for the location Whether the incident affects your community or travel route
Queensland The Queensland emergency or fire authority Warning boundary, evacuation advice and current access routes
South Australia The South Australian emergency or fire authority Incident update time and instructions for your area
Tasmania The Tasmanian emergency-alert service Official warning and evacuation information; TasALERT says not to wait for an alert if you are at risk
Victoria The Victorian emergency-warning service and its live map/list Warning level, evacuation information, road status and centre availability
Western Australia The Western Australian emergency or fire authority Local warning, fire location and safe departure information

The table identifies the type of authority to use, not a single national app. Services, page names and features differ, and an app designed for one jurisdiction should not be assumed to work elsewhere.

What to do when an evacuation direction is issued

  1. Stop normal activities and read the full message. Note the affected area, action, update time and issuing authority.
  2. Decide early. New South Wales Government guidance states, “Leaving early is your safest option.” If leaving is the stated action, do not wait for a more convenient time.
  3. Tell everyone in your household. Include visitors, children, older people and anyone who may need transport or medication.
  4. Take essential items only. Bring identification, medicines, water, food, phone chargers, pet supplies and important documents that are immediately available.
  5. Use the official route. Follow the current road and destination information. Obey police, fire and traffic controllers even if a navigation app suggests another path.
  6. Keep checking while travelling. Stop safely to read updates; never use a phone while driving.
  7. If you cannot leave safely, follow the shelter instruction. Move to the safest available solid building or location named by the authority and call 000 if life is at risk.

Conditions can change quickly. NSW guidance warns that some fires spread so rapidly that an alert may not arrive before danger. TasALERT likewise advises people not to wait for an official warning when they can see danger or believe they are at risk.

When no warning has arrived

The absence of a notification does not prove that you are safe. Warning systems have coverage, power, network and timing limits. If you see flames or heavy smoke, hear official reports of a nearby fire, or cannot safely account for changing conditions, move away from danger using the safest available route and seek emergency help.

  • Call 000 for an immediate threat to life, a trapped person or a fire requiring urgent emergency response.
  • Do not drive toward smoke to investigate, film or collect someone unless directed by emergency authorities.
  • Do not enter a closed road or an evacuation zone to retrieve property.
  • Keep children and pets with you; smoke and embers can make a short delay dangerous.

AusAlert: what the national cell-broadcast system can and cannot do

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) describes AusAlert as a national cell-broadcast emergency-warning system for compatible mobile devices. A targeted message is intended to explain the emergency, its location and seriousness, the required action, the sender and where to find more information. NEMA says only authorised emergency-services organisations and certain Australian Government agencies can send these messages.

AusAlert is an additional way to receive a warning, not a replacement for the local authority’s live incident page. Continue checking the state or territory service for the action statement, map, road status and evacuation-centre information.

NEMA reported that its national test was conducted on Monday 27 July 2026, with a Critical Alert sent at about 2:00 pm Australian Eastern Standard Time to compatible devices across Australia. About 94% of mobile towers successfully broadcast the alert. That is a tower-level test result, not a promise that every handset will receive every alert. Device compatibility, coverage, operational status and features can change; check current NEMA and local-authority information during an incident.

Keeping updates when power or mobile service fails

Online maps and phone alerts are useful but depend on electricity, network access and a working device. NSW Government guidance recommends local ABC radio and a battery-operated radio when power or mobile networks may be affected.

Channel Strength Limitation Best use
Official emergency website or app Detailed incident text, maps and action statements Needs power, connectivity and a functioning device Primary source for live decisions when available
Cell-broadcast alert such as AusAlert Can target compatible phones in an affected area Not every device or tower will receive every message; detail may be limited Immediate notification, followed by the local authority’s information
Local ABC radio Can continue providing updates when internet access is poor May not provide the full map or every destination detail Backup monitoring during outages
Battery-operated radio Works without mains power when batteries are available Must be tuned to the relevant local service Preparedness backup for radio updates
Social media or forwarded messages May spread eyewitness information quickly Can be wrong, delayed, altered or missing the action statement Lead only; verify every claim through an official authority

Radio is a fallback information channel, not a substitute for incident-specific evacuation directions. When a radio report conflicts with a current official instruction, follow the emergency authority and emergency personnel at the scene.

Prepare before bushfire season

Preparation reduces the time between an official direction and a safe departure.

  • Save the emergency authority for your home, workplace and regular travel destinations.
  • Install the relevant official app if the jurisdiction provides one, and enable emergency notifications.
  • Write down two evacuation destinations and more than one route; check them against official road information during an event.
  • Keep phones charged, maintain spare power banks and store a battery-operated radio with fresh batteries.
  • Make a household list of medicines, mobility equipment, infant supplies, pet carriers and livestock arrangements.
  • Decide who will collect children, relatives and animals if a fire begins during work or school hours.
  • Practise leaving early so nobody has to search for documents or supplies after an alert.

Review this plan when you move, change vehicles, add a family member or receive new information from your local authority.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

Waiting for the red warning

Emergency Warning is the highest level, but waiting for it can remove your safest travel window. If your local authority says to prepare or leave at Watch and Act, begin then.

Using a national label without the local instruction

The colour tells you the general urgency; it does not identify a road, centre or shelter. Open the incident message and read its action statement.

Trusting a screenshot

A screenshot has no guarantee of being current. Reopen the official incident page and check its timestamp.

Assuming a phone alert proves coverage

AusAlert’s 2026 test measured successful broadcasts from about 94% of mobile towers. It did not guarantee delivery to every handset, so keep another way to receive updates.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Driving without checking the route

Smoke, fire, emergency vehicles and traffic controls can close a road after a map was published. Verify the route immediately before departure and obey on-road directions.

Collecting belongings after leaving

Returning for property can put you into a changed fire environment or a closed zone. Take essential items when you leave and do not re-enter unless authorities explicitly say it is safe.

A simple decision rule during a fast-moving fire

Use this sequence whenever you are uncertain:

  1. Risk: Can you see fire or smoke, or are you in an area named by an official warning?
  2. Instruction: What does the current action statement tell you to do?
  3. Time: Can you complete that action before roads, visibility or communications deteriorate?
  4. Verification: Have you checked the latest official map, route and destination?
  5. Fallback: If the network fails, can you receive local ABC radio updates and contact 000 for immediate danger?

If you believe you are at risk, act rather than waiting for a notification. Official warnings improve your information; they are not a guarantee that danger will be announced before it reaches you.

How to keep information current

Bushfire warnings and evacuation directions are volatile. Check the live authority channel on the day of an incident, not an old article or saved link. NSW guidance cited here was last updated 22 November 2023 and remains useful for the principle of leaving early, but current local instructions take precedence. AusAlert’s compatibility and operating arrangements are also subject to change.

The safest information chain is therefore: local official warning, complete action statement, live map or incident list, and a backup such as local ABC radio. Use all four when conditions are changing, and call 000 when life is at risk.
