On AO3, start with the NHL | National Hockey League works listing, then narrow by team, player or relationship, and trope. If you want stories about actual hockey players, also look under Men’s Hockey RPF. Check each work’s rating, warnings, tags, and completion status before you read.
Choose the fandom that fits the story you want
AO3’s NHL tag is a broad starting point for works connected to the league. It can include cross-fandom stories and works with different primary fandom labels, so check the other fandoms and tags on a result to see what it is actually about.

For fan-created fiction about real hockey players, search Men’s Hockey RPF as well. RPF means real-person fiction; a story’s portrayal of a player is fictional, not evidence about that person’s private life. Hockey RPF can also include players outside the NHL, so use the specific team or player tags to narrow your search. Fanlore’s Hockey RPF overview offers community-maintained context on the fandom.
Build a search from team, player, and trope tags
- Open the NHL works listing. Start at NHL | National Hockey League, or use Men’s Hockey RPF if your focus is real players.
- Add a team tag. Search for the full team name and prefer the archive’s linked tag when it appears. Tags in the observed listing include formats such as “Carolina Hurricanes NHL Team” and “Edmonton Oilers NHL Team.”
- Add a player or relationship. Search a player’s name or select a relationship tag. On AO3, a slash between names commonly denotes a romantic or sexual relationship, while an ampersand commonly denotes a non-romantic one; read the tag and work summary rather than assuming every author uses labels identically.
- Choose one or two tropes. Try terms such as “slow burn,” “hurt/comfort,” “enemies to lovers,” “mutual pining,” “alternate universe,” or “team as family.” These are examples of tags in use, not a complete or universally standardized vocabulary.
- Set filters that matter to you. Use the listing’s include and exclude filters for ratings, archive warnings, categories, and tags. Then review the work’s own tags and summary: tags help with discovery but cannot guarantee that every reader will interpret a story’s content the same way.
Try another tag when results are sparse
AO3 combines user-created tags with tag wrangling: volunteers connect some related tags so works can be found through related wording while the author’s phrasing remains visible. A University of Waterloo thesis on men’s real-person hockey fanfiction uses “Bennguin” as an example linked to “Jamie Benn/Tyler Seguin.” Trying both a familiar pairing nickname and the players’ names can therefore help when one search misses relevant works. The thesis describes this hybrid approach as: “This hybrid folksonomy affords searchability of the archive (where freetagging does not) and the creation of fanon (which controlled vocabulary tags do not).”

If a search is too narrow, remove one constraint at a time—for example, drop the trope first, then broaden the team or relationship wording. You can also open a linked tag to see related works.
Search patterns to adapt
- Team atmosphere: NHL | National Hockey League + your team’s linked tag + “slow burn.”
- Real-player story: Men’s Hockey RPF + a player or pairing tag + “hurt/comfort.”
- Specific relationship dynamic: a player name or relationship tag + “enemies to lovers” or “mutual pining.”
- Pairing nickname: try the nickname as well as both players’ names if the formal relationship search is quiet.
These combinations are ways to search, not guarantees that a particular set of tags has works available. Tag inventories and results change over time.

Screen a result before opening it
AO3 listings expose useful metadata, but each work deserves a quick check on its own page. Look at the rating, archive warnings, relationship and category labels, tags, summary, and whether the work is marked complete or ongoing. Choose filters based on your preferences, then confirm that the result fits before reading.
Counts on tag and work listings are snapshots, not durable measures of how large a fandom or pairing is. The available NHL listing is a third-party mirror, so use AO3’s live interface for current tags and results.
