The most reliable way to find a new Xbox game from a familiar IP is to translate what you enjoy into specific traits—genre, setting, tone, mechanics, story emphasis, difficulty, session length, and solo or multiplayer play—then search and compare games using those traits. Xbox does not document a universal feature that recommends games solely because they share an IP, universe, or franchise. Treat an IP as your starting clue, not as proof that another game will play the same.
Start with the current Xbox Game Pass catalog if you use the service, then check the Xbox app on Windows and Xbox-curated collections such as Indie Selects. Confirm every candidate’s platform, player modes, accessibility information, region and subscription status before deciding it is a match.

What “games based on an IP I like” should mean
An original IP can point to a world, character, genre or style you enjoy, but the name alone is too broad to produce a useful recommendation. Two games can share a genre and feel completely different; two games from unrelated IPs can share the same satisfying combat loop.

Separate an official connection from a similarity. An official connection means the game belongs to the same franchise or licensed universe. A similarity means it shares qualities such as tactical combat, a dark science-fiction setting, short roguelike runs or a story-heavy solo structure. Xbox’s catalog metadata can help with genre, platform, player modes and some accessibility information, but setting, tone, narrative emphasis and moment-to-moment feel require your own comparison.

What Xbox can and cannot promise
- Xbox’s published materials support searching and filtering games by genre and other catalog fields.
- The reviewed Xbox sources do not establish a universal recommendation engine that finds games solely from a shared IP.
- A genre label does not prove that two games share mechanics, story structure, technical features or accessibility support.
- There is no published statistic showing how often Xbox discovery tools find a successful match for a player’s favorite IP.
Use phrases such as “games like [favorite game],” “what should I play after [title]” and “Xbox games similar to [IP]” as practical search prompts. They are useful wording choices, not measured search-volume claims.
Map the favorite IP before searching
Write down the qualities that made the original game appealing. This prevents the familiar name from steering you toward an attractive but unsuitable recommendation.
| Attribute | Questions to answer | Useful search language |
|---|---|---|
| Genre and structure | Is it an action game, role-playing game, strategy game, racing game, simulation, horror game or something else? Is it open-world, mission-based, linear or run-based? | “tactical RPG,” “open-world action,” “turn-based strategy,” “roguelike runs” |
| Moment-to-moment mechanics | What do you do most: shoot, parry, build, sneak, solve puzzles, manage resources, drive or explore? | “parry-focused combat,” “stealth systems,” “base building,” “co-op puzzles” |
| Setting | Do you want space opera, high fantasy, historical drama, modern crime, post-apocalyptic survival or another setting? | “space exploration,” “post-apocalyptic,” “mythic fantasy” |
| Tone | Is the appeal hopeful, comic, frightening, tragic, relaxed, competitive or mysterious? | “lighthearted adventure,” “psychological horror,” “cozy exploration” |
| Story emphasis | Do you want a cinematic campaign, character relationships, environmental storytelling or minimal narrative? | “story-rich single-player,” “branching dialogue,” “narrative exploration” |
| Play pattern | Do you usually play alone, locally with others, online cooperatively or competitively? How long should a session last? | “solo campaign,” “two-player couch co-op,” “short-session multiplayer” |
| Challenge and accessibility | Do you want demanding mastery, adjustable difficulty, simplified controls, subtitles, color options or other support? | Use the game’s accessibility details rather than assuming support from a similar IP. |
Choose only the strongest two or three traits
A search containing every preference can eliminate good candidates. Select the traits that made the favorite special. For example, someone who likes a science-fiction franchise may care less about its space setting than about squad tactics and a long solo campaign. Someone who likes a fantasy IP may actually be looking for fast parries and boss encounters rather than fantasy fiction.

Keep the other traits as checks for the final shortlist. Begin broad enough to find options, then narrow by player mode, platform, accessibility and availability.
Search the current Xbox Game Pass catalog
The official Game Pass catalog page is the best first stop for subscribers and for anyone who wants to see what is immediately playable through the service. The page inspected on October 13, 2026 exposes search, platform filters, subscription filters, genres and collections. Catalog membership is volatile, so a title shown in an article or video may no longer be included when you look.

- Open the current Xbox Game Pass catalog in a browser or through the relevant Xbox interface.
- Enter a broad term based on your two or three strongest traits, rather than relying only on the familiar IP’s name.
- Apply the platform filter for the device you actually use: Xbox console, Windows PC or another supported platform shown in the current interface.
- Apply the subscription filter that matches your plan. Do not treat a catalog search result as proof that every tier includes the game.
- Use the genre filter to reduce the list to the type of play you want.
- Inspect the available collections, including popular, recently added, coming soon, leaving soon, publisher or service-group collections and ID@Xbox.
- Open each candidate’s current listing and confirm that it still shows the expected platform and access terms before adding it to your shortlist.
How to use the collections without mistaking curation for a match
“Recently added” is useful when you want something fresh, while “leaving soon” can help you prioritize a game that you can play only for a limited time. “Popular” reflects visibility, not compatibility with your favorite. ID@Xbox can surface independent releases that may not resemble a major franchise but may share the mechanics or tone you actually value.
Collections are discovery routes, not evidence that Xbox has matched a game to your IP. Read the game’s description, screenshots, modes and accessibility information before deciding.

Use the Xbox app on Windows for preference-led discovery
In a March 2023 announcement, Xbox described a Windows app flow called “Tell us what you like.” The player selected a genre or “vibe” and received a small set of collections. The same announcement described regional Trending games and library filters for player count, rating and genre.
Those details describe a dated app feature, not a guarantee that the same controls exist in the October 2026 interface. Open the current Xbox app and look on its Home or discovery surfaces for preference prompts, recommendations, Trending content and filters. If a label or flow is absent, use the Game Pass catalog and Store search instead of following obsolete click-by-click instructions.
A practical Windows workflow
- Launch the Xbox app on Windows and open its current Home or discovery area.
- Look for a preference prompt, genre or vibe selector, curated collection or Trending section.
- Choose the genre or mood that corresponds to the favorite’s strongest trait.
- Use any available player-count, rating or genre filters to remove games that do not fit your play pattern.
- Open a candidate’s full page and check platform, purchase or subscription status, modes and accessibility details.
- Save promising games to your library or wishlist where the current app provides that option.
Chris Charla, Xbox’s General Manager of Content Curation and Programs, wrote on December 11, 2024 that “The Xbox app is also becoming a great way for players to find cool Xbox games that aren’t available with Game Pass.” That distinction matters: the app can expose purchase titles as well as subscription titles, so do not assume that a recommendation is included with your plan.

Charla also wrote that “Home highlights featured content so players can stay up to date on game releases, new events, Game Pass content, sales, and more.” Treat those highlights as a changing editorial surface rather than a permanent recommendation list.
Look beyond major franchises with Indie Selects
Xbox announced Indie Selects in January 2024 as a curated route to independent games, with rotating weekly themes, upcoming titles that could be wishlisted and a monthly set of six selected games. A March 2024 Xbox article presented the collection as a way to explore more of the Xbox catalog beyond Game Pass. Because those announcements describe planned or historical operation, check the current Store collection to confirm whether the same cadence and sections are still present.
- Search the Xbox Store for the current Indie Selects collection.
- Browse the active theme or featured list instead of assuming every past monthly selection remains visible.
- Open an upcoming title’s page if you want to wishlist it, and verify that the wishlist control is currently available.
- Evaluate each game using your attribute map: mechanics, tone, story focus, mode, accessibility and platform.
Independent games are particularly valuable when the favorite IP’s most important quality is a design idea rather than its license. A smaller game may reproduce a tight combat loop, unusual narrative structure or short-session format more closely than another large franchise entry.
Xbox said in March 2024 that more than 3,500 titles from independent developers in more than 100 countries were in active development for Xbox and Windows through ID@Xbox. That is a dated program figure, not a current catalog total or a measure of recommendation quality.
Build a shortlist and compare the right things
Once you have five to ten candidates, compare them on the attributes that caused you to enjoy the original IP. A structured list prevents a familiar logo, high review score or prominent placement from dominating the decision.

| Comparison axis | What to verify | Why it changes the recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| Genre and mechanics | Read the official description and inspect gameplay footage or screenshots. Identify the repeated actions, not just the store’s broad genre label. | The same genre can contain radically different controls, pacing and progression. |
| Setting and tone | Check whether the world and emotional register match what you wanted from the favorite. | A similar combat system may not suit someone seeking a particular atmosphere. |
| Narrative emphasis | Determine whether the game is campaign-led, character-focused, exploratory or primarily systemic. | Story expectations strongly affect satisfaction with a supposed “similar” game. |
| Player mode | Confirm solo, local co-op, online multiplayer or competitive modes on the current listing. | A game cannot replace a solo favorite if it requires a group, or replace a co-op favorite if it lacks multiplayer. |
| Platform | Check Xbox console and Windows PC availability separately. | Some listings cover one platform while another version is unavailable or differs in access. |
| Accessibility | Read the accessibility information supplied on the game page or platform listing. | Do not infer captions, remapping, color options or other support from a franchise resemblance. |
| Access and cost | Record whether the title is included in your current subscription tier, requires a purchase or is an upcoming release. | Availability changes and may differ by region, edition and platform. |
Use a simple scoring sheet
Give each candidate a score from zero to three for your top three traits, then mark hard requirements separately. For example, “online co-op required” should be a pass-or-fail check, not a small penalty. A candidate with excellent atmosphere but no required co-op mode is not a match.
Keep evidence beside each score: the catalog genre, the player-mode entry, the accessibility description or your observation of the mechanics. This makes it clear which conclusions come from official metadata and which are your editorial judgment.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Verify accessibility and player modes before installing
Microsoft’s Game Publishing Guide identifies genre, solo, multiplayer, co-op and cross-platform modes as useful publishing metadata. It also explains why accessibility information helps players discover games that provide particular support.
Use those fields as a verification step, not as a shortcut. A “role-playing” label says nothing about remappable controls; an “online multiplayer” label does not tell you whether a solo campaign exists. Open the current game page and look for the specific support you need.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Confirm whether the mode is solo, local co-op, online co-op or competitive multiplayer.
- Check whether cross-platform play is stated, rather than assuming it from a Windows and console release.
- Look for the accessibility features relevant to you, such as subtitles, control options, visual adjustments or difficulty assistance.
- If a required feature is not listed, treat it as unconfirmed and look for developer documentation before buying.
Check availability, region and subscription details at the end
Availability is one of the easiest ways for a recommendation to become inaccurate. Game Pass membership changes, titles can leave the service, editions differ and regional catalogs are not identical.
Best Value
- Open the live listing from your own Xbox account or storefront.
- Confirm the exact platform and edition.
- Check the subscription tier named on the page, if any.
- Check whether the title is available in your country or region.
- Note whether it is currently playable, coming soon, leaving soon, an upcoming release or purchase-only.
- Recheck the listing immediately before recommending it to someone else.
Xbox’s December 2024 app update said nearly 400 titles that had previously been undiscoverable or unpurchasable in the Xbox app were added to it. That figure describes one app catalog update; it is not the size of the entire Xbox catalog and does not measure how successful discovery was.
What to do when the search produces no good match
Relax the least important trait
If every result fits the setting but not the play style, remove the setting first. Mechanics usually determine whether a game feels satisfying minute to minute, while setting can be replaced more easily.
Switch from franchise terms to mechanic terms
Search for the action you repeat—parrying, squad commands, deck-building, stealth or resource management—instead of the IP name. Then apply the setting and tone as filters when reading individual pages.
Search collections instead of a single title
Use ID@Xbox, Indie Selects, recently added and genre collections to widen the pool. Curated lists can expose games that do not rank highly for a franchise-name search.
Separate a discovery problem from an availability problem
If you found the right game but it is not in your tier or region, record it as a purchase or wishlist candidate rather than calling it unavailable everywhere. The Xbox app may show games outside Game Pass, and the Store listing is the authority for current access.
A repeatable checklist
- Name the favorite IP and write down its strongest three qualities.
- Choose two or three search terms based on mechanics, genre, tone or play mode.
- Search the current Game Pass catalog and apply platform, subscription and genre filters.
- Review relevant collections, including recently added, leaving soon, ID@Xbox and the current Indie Selects page.
- On Windows, check the Xbox app’s present preference, Trending and library-filter features; do not rely on old labels.
- Shortlist five to ten games and compare mechanics, setting, story, modes, accessibility and platform.
- Open every live listing to verify region, tier, edition and current availability.
- Recommend a specific title only when it matches a stated preference and the access details are confirmed.
The Bottom Line
Find the qualities behind the IP you love, search those qualities through Xbox’s live catalog and curated collections, and verify mode, accessibility, platform and access on each current game page. That process produces more dependable recommendations than assuming a shared franchise name—or a genre label—means two games will feel alike.
