Use Steam’s Discovery Queue as a screening stream, then branch from promising games into specific tag pages and trusted curator lists. Save only games you may actually revisit to your Wishlist, use Follow when you want announcements, and mark poor fits as Ignore or Not Interested so they stop shaping your recommendations.
This combination works better than relying on the front page because each surface has a different job: the queue supplies personalized candidates, tags let you steer the search, curators add a human point of view, and your Wishlist preserves a deliberate shortlist.

How Steam’s discovery tools fit together
Steam does not have one complete “hidden games” catalog. Instead, several store features expose different slices of the catalog and react to different signals. Treating them as a workflow gives you more control than browsing a single popularity-heavy page.

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Discovery Queue | One game at a time from an individualized stream | Mostly automated; you steer it with actions and the games you play or save | Fast screening of candidates you might otherwise miss | Can contain noise or repeat familiar types of games |
| Tag and genre pages | A wider catalog grouped by descriptive tags | High; you choose the tags and combinations to explore | Following a specific mechanic, mood, mode, or theme | Broad tags can be noisy, and tags can change over time |
| Steam Curators | A narrower list selected by a person or editorial group | High if the curator’s taste matches yours | Getting explanations and recommendations from a recognizable point of view | Quality and update frequency vary by curator |
| Wishlist | Your persistent list of games worth revisiting | High; you decide what remains | Maintaining a buying or research shortlist | It becomes stale when games no longer fit |
Valve describes the Discovery Queue as a way to explore suggested games and, for each product, choose to follow it, add it to your Wishlist, purchase it, or mark it as not interested. Tags are used in store hubs and recommendation systems, so a tag page is not just a static genre list: it is a steering wheel for further discovery.

Use the Discovery Queue as a screening pass
Open a queue from the Store
- Open Steam’s Store area in the desktop client or on the Steam website.
- Choose Discovery Queue. Steam presents suggested products one at a time.
- On each card, read the short description, inspect the displayed tags, watch the trailer if the concept is unclear, and check the review summary before deciding what to do.
- Choose one deliberate action: add the game to your Wishlist, Follow it for announcements, Ignore or mark it Not Interested, or open its store page for a closer look.
The exact placement of the queue can change as Steam tests storefront layouts. A PC Gamer report dated April 1, 2026 described Valve testing a refresh in which the queue opened as an overlay and the Wishlist gained expanded sections. That was a reported test, not proof that every account has the same interface, so use the current Store labels shown in your own client.
Understand what the queue is optimizing
Valve’s Steam Discovery Update called the queue “a powerful, new way of exploring the most popular new releases that you haven’t yet seen.” The queue is therefore a stream of suggestions, not an exhaustive list of every obscure release. Its candidates can reflect games you have recently played, games on your Wishlist, and recommendations from friends, according to Valve documentation.
To make the stream more useful, begin after playing or wishlisting a game that represents the experience you want. If you are looking for compact turn-based tactics, for example, start from a game you genuinely enjoyed in that style rather than from a broad bestseller. The goal is to give Steam a clear starting signal before you begin screening.
Apply a consistent decision rule
Use the same question for every queue card: “What do I want this game to do in my library?” A Wishlist entry means you may buy it or want to revisit it. Follow means you want announcements in your activity feed, even if you are not ready to buy. Ignore or Not Interested means the game, or this type of recommendation, should not return to your discovery stream.

Do not add a game to the Wishlist merely because its capsule art looks appealing. Check at least one source of evidence on the card or store page: tags, a trailer, the description, or reviews. A short screening rule prevents a queue session from turning into an unmanageable list.
Turn promising games into targeted tag searches
Read tags as search ingredients
When a queue item is close to what you want, open its store page and inspect the tags. Look for concrete descriptors rather than relying on a single broad label. A useful combination might pair a genre with a mode or theme, such as “strategy” with “turn-based,” “co-op” with “survival,” or “story rich” with “short.” These examples are search patterns, not guarantees that every game carries every tag.
Select a tag to open its page, then use the sorting or filtering controls Steam exposes in your current interface. Start with one tag to understand the catalog, then narrow with a second descriptor when the results are too broad. If a combination becomes too restrictive, remove the least important tag instead of jumping back to the front page.

Why tags can reveal games the front page misses
Tags underpin Steam store hubs and recommendation systems. A front page may emphasize current popularity, major releases, or personalized promotions; a tag page gives you a different entry point into the catalog. Following a specific mechanic or mood can surface smaller releases that are not competing for the same broad bestseller placement.

Tags are community- and platform-managed descriptors rather than immutable technical specifications. Read several tags together and verify the store description or trailer before assuming a game has a particular feature. A tag can be useful for discovery without being a complete description of how the game plays.
Account for changing tag pages
A TechRadar report dated May 19, 2026 described a tag overhaul and reported that 17 tags were added and 28 removed. That figure is a report about the overhaul, not a permanent inventory for every account or language. If an older guide tells you to use a tag that no longer appears, search for the closest current descriptor in Steam’s interface rather than treating the old label as a requirement.
Use Wishlist, Follow, and Ignore for different jobs
| Action | Choose it when | What it accomplishes | Maintenance habit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wishlist | You may buy the game or want to return to it later | Keeps the game in a persistent shortlist and can contribute to recommendation signals | Remove games that no longer fit; use available categories or filters if your current interface provides them |
| Follow | You want announcements, even without a buying decision | Places the game’s announcements in your activity feed | Unfollow when updates are no longer useful |
| Ignore / Not Interested | You do not want this title or this kind of suggestion repeated | Helps exclude the product from future recommendations and, according to Valve, featured spots | Use it decisively for clear mismatches rather than letting them accumulate in your queue |
Keep the Wishlist as a shortlist, not a storage bin
Valve documentation identifies Wishlist games as one signal used in recommendation areas. That makes a carefully maintained list more useful than a giant archive of every vaguely interesting title. Revisit it periodically and remove games whose genre, scope, price expectations, or development status no longer fit your plans.
The current interface may offer filtering or categories, but controls can vary by rollout and account. If those controls are available, use them to separate near-term purchases from games you are merely researching. If they are not, use a smaller list and rely on your own notes outside Steam for longer-term tracking.

Add human judgment with Steam Curators
Steamworks lists Steam Curators alongside the Discovery Queue and tag or genre pages as visibility surfaces. Curators can narrow a huge catalog to a particular taste, platform, accessibility preference, or play style, and a written explanation can tell you why a game made the list.
How to evaluate a curator
- Taste fit: Check several recommendations against games you already know. A curator who likes the same pacing, difficulty, or storytelling approach is more useful than one with a large following but mismatched preferences.
- Explanation quality: Prefer entries that explain strengths, caveats, or the intended audience instead of providing only a score or a one-word verdict.
- Update recency: Look at recent activity. An old list may still contain good games, but it is less useful for tracking current releases or changing projects.
- Consistency: Compare the curator’s positive and negative recommendations with your own experience. This reveals whether its labels are meaningful for you.
Use curators as a second opinion, not as an automatic substitute for checking the store page. Trailers, tags, and user reviews still provide evidence about the individual game.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A repeatable workflow for finding overlooked games
- Choose a seed. Start from a recently played or wishlisted game that captures the mood, mechanics, or length you want. Steam says recommendations can use recently played games, Wishlist games, and friends’ recommendations.
- Run one queue session. Open Discovery Queue and screen each card instead of clicking through without reading. Keep the session focused on one type of game so your actions send a clearer signal.
- Record only meaningful candidates. Wishlist a possible purchase, Follow an announcement source, and Ignore or mark Not Interested a clear mismatch. Do not use the Wishlist as a bookmark for every result.
- Branch from the strongest item. Open a promising game’s tags and choose the most specific descriptor that matches what you want.
- Widen or narrow deliberately. Browse the tag page first, then add a second tag when the result set is noisy. Remove a tag if the combination hides too many plausible games.
- Check a curator. Look for a curator whose taste and explanations match your needs. Compare its recommendations with the tags and store evidence rather than accepting every verdict.
- Verify before saving. Read the current description, watch enough of the trailer to understand the loop, and inspect reviews for recurring concerns. Then decide whether the title belongs on your Wishlist or should simply remain a candidate.
- Prune on a schedule. Revisit the Wishlist and followed games after a major sale, a development update, or a few weeks of use. Remove stale entries so future recommendations remain relevant.
Choose the right surface for the question you have
| If your question is… | Start here | Why |
|---|---|---|
| “What might I like that I have not seen?” | Discovery Queue | It supplies an individualized stream of candidates. |
| “Show me games built around this mechanic or theme.” | Tag page | You can select the descriptor and adjust the breadth yourself. |
| “Which games fit this person’s taste?” | Steam Curator | A human list can add context that a tag cannot. |
| “What do I want to remember for a possible purchase?” | Wishlist | It preserves a deliberate shortlist and can inform recommendations. |
| “How do I stop seeing this type of suggestion?” | Ignore or Not Interested | Valve says the action can exclude a product from future recommendations and featured spots. |
Fix common discovery problems
The queue keeps showing games you already know
Use the queue as a screening stream rather than expecting it to reveal the entire catalog. Mark clear mismatches as Ignore or Not Interested, and seed the next session with a different recently played or wishlisted game. Branching into tags is the faster way to move outside the queue’s current pattern.
Tag results are too broad
Broad descriptors can contain thousands of unrelated games. Add a second tag for the mode, viewpoint, theme, or pacing you actually care about. If the combination becomes empty or nearly empty, remove the least important descriptor and verify candidates on their store pages.

Tag results do not match the game
Tags are discovery descriptors, not a complete specification. Check the description, trailer, and reviews before saving a game. If a tag repeatedly leads to poor matches, stop using it as your primary filter and try a more concrete combination.
The Wishlist is overwhelming
Apply a hard rule: keep a title only if you can explain why you might buy or revisit it. Remove games that no longer fit and separate near-term purchases from long-shot research when Steam’s current controls allow categories or filtering.
Your screen does not match an online guide
Steam’s storefront is subject to tests and rollouts. The Discovery Queue may appear as a normal Store page or an overlay, and Wishlist sections may differ between accounts. Follow the current labels in your client instead of assuming a reported test has reached everyone.
What to expect from this method
This workflow improves the odds of finding games outside the front page, but it does not produce a guaranteed count of hidden titles or a universal ranking of discovery tools. Queue and store surfaces change continuously. Curator lists depend on how often their owners update them. A Wishlist remains persistent, but its value declines when it is not maintained. Your best results come from combining the breadth of tags, the automation of the queue, and the judgment of a curator while keeping your own saved lists selective.
