If a piece is missing from a newly opened LEGO set, use LEGO’s official Replacement Pieces service and choose Missing pieces. Find the set with the five- to seven-digit number printed on the box or instructions, select the absent element, and submit the request. A broken piece, a missing numbered bag, and a part lost from an older set follow different routes, so choosing the correct option is the key to getting useful help.
Choose the correct LEGO replacement route first
LEGO separates replacement requests by what happened to the part and how large the problem is. Use this table before starting so a single missing brick does not get filed as a damaged part or a missing-bag case.

Find the set number and identify the exact element
Locate the set number
Look on the front or side of the box and on the cover or opening pages of the building instructions. LEGO says current set numbers are five to seven digits and are displayed prominently on both. Entering that number is more reliable than searching only by a similar-sounding set name.

Check the build and inventory before submitting
Compare the assembled model with the instruction step where you first noticed the problem. Count the loose pieces in the opened bags and inspect the parts inventory in the booklet, when one is provided. A part that appears missing may still be in a numbered bag, inside a larger element, or attached to the model in an earlier step.
For newer sets, LEGO places element numbers at the back of the instructions. Use that inventory to distinguish two pieces that look alike but have different lengths, connection points, prints, or colors.
Read a molded design number when necessary
If you have a physical piece and need to identify it, examine the inside under bright light. Many LEGO elements have a small four- or five-digit design number molded into the plastic. Rotate the part until the number is visible, then record the number together with the color. Shape and color still matter: a number copied from another set or a visually similar shade can identify a different element.

For an older part, an old number may return no result because LEGO sometimes changes numbers over time. Check whether the element has a current number, and contact LEGO if you cannot map the older marking to a current listing. Availability depends on what is in stock when you search.

Request a missing piece from a newly opened set
- Confirm that the omission is from a new set. The Missing pieces flow is intended for a part absent when the set was opened, not a piece that disappeared after months of play.
- Write down the set number. Use the five- to seven-digit number from the box or instructions. Note the set name as a secondary check.
- Identify the missing element. Use the instruction inventory, the step where it is used, and any element or molded design number. Record the color and quantity.
- Open LEGO’s Replacement Pieces page. Select Missing pieces, then search by the set name or number. The page’s wording, such as “Request a missing piece from your new set,” should match the route you need.
- Select the absent part in the set view. Confirm its shape, color, image, and quantity before adding it to the request. If the part is printed or comes in left- and right-handed versions, compare it with the instructions rather than relying on a thumbnail alone.
- Complete the contact and delivery details. Use the service page for the country where the replacement will be delivered. The researched help pages are primarily U.S. versions, and country-specific eligibility, fees, and shipping rules are not established as identical everywhere.
- Submit a separate request for every set. LEGO’s missing-piece page says a single request cannot cover multiple sets. Start a new request if two newly opened sets have omissions.
- Save the case information. Keep the confirmation email or case number, the set number, and your list of requested elements until the issue is resolved.
Do not assume a receipt is always required. LEGO’s guidance says it may occasionally request proof of purchase, particularly in cases involving a missing bag or many missing pieces. Follow the instructions attached to your individual case.
When the piece is broken or damaged
A crack, fracture, deformation, or other defect is not a missing-piece request. Use LEGO’s Broken Bricks route for a damaged part from a new set.
- Have the set number from the box or instructions ready.
- Open the Broken Bricks option and identify the damaged element.
- Describe what is wrong, such as a visible crack, a connection that will not hold, or a part damaged in the bag.
- Keep the original piece. LEGO may ask you to return it for inspection.
- Retain purchase documentation in case LEGO requests a copy of the receipt.
- Watch for the service email confirming that the replacement is on its way.
A part that broke after you built or played with an older set may not qualify for the same new-set damage handling. For that situation, search Pick a Brick or ask customer service about available stock.
What to do when a whole bag or many pieces are missing
If an entire numbered prepack bag is absent, or the set is missing many pieces, LEGO specifically recommends calling customer service rather than filing a normal single-part request. A missing bag can contain dozens of elements, and a phone agent can determine whether the issue is a packing problem, a lost bag, or a request that needs additional verification.

Before calling, identify two or three of the most unusual missing bricks. LEGO suggests this can help support staff establish which bag or inventory section is affected. Also gather:
- The set number and set name.
- The bag number, if the packaging or instructions identify it.
- A written list of the missing elements and quantities.
- The instruction pages where those pieces are used.
- Your order or retailer information and proof of purchase, if available.
- Photos of the opened packaging if they help show what was received.
Proof of purchase is not stated as a universal requirement. LEGO says it may request it depending on the set and the number of missing pieces, so provide it if asked rather than assuming the same rule applies to every case.
Can LEGO replace a piece lost from an older set?
For a piece lost after a set has been opened and used, start with Pick a Brick. Search by the element or design number, by color, or by the set when that search is available. LEGO describes this as a way to buy individual pieces for older sets; it is different from reporting an omission in a new set.
Availability changes as inventory changes. LEGO says a smaller Pick a Brick order may incur a service fee and that the live order page shows the applicable fee and threshold information. The exact fee, threshold, and delivery date are not fixed figures in the available guidance, so check the current order page before paying.

LEGO also says pieces ship when all pieces in an order are available. If one selected element is out of stock, that can affect dispatch of the whole order. Check each item’s current availability and consider whether combining several needed parts in one order is worth waiting for them all to be available.

LEGO warns that older elements can run out and that it may no longer have the exact replacement. A visually similar current element may work, but it can differ in dimensions, connection geometry, print, color, or finish. Compare the following before accepting a substitute:
- Design or element number: confirm that the listing corresponds to the part in your instructions.
- Color: LEGO colors that look similar on a screen can differ noticeably in person.
- Geometry: check length, thickness, studs, bars, clips, hinges, and left/right orientation.
- Decoration: a printed tile or transparent element may not be interchangeable with an unprinted version.
- Condition: decide whether a new element is necessary or whether a used part is acceptable for a display model.
LEGO’s older-piece guidance notes that fan websites and other retailers may carry new or used parts, while disclaiming responsibility for those sellers. If you use an outside marketplace, verify the part number, color, condition, seller reputation, and return terms. Treat that purchase as separate from LEGO’s own replacement service.

The set will not appear in search
- Re-enter the complete five- to seven-digit set number without confusing it with a model number, product barcode, or instruction-page number.
- Try the set name after checking spelling and theme.
- Confirm that you are on the service page for the delivery country.
- If the set is old, search Pick a Brick by element or design number instead of using the missing-new-set route.
The listed part looks different from yours
- Compare the instruction inventory image, molded number, color, and physical dimensions.
- Check whether the part is a printed, transparent, mirrored, left-hand, or right-hand variant.
- Do not select a visually similar element solely because its thumbnail color matches.
The request covers more than one set
Submit each set separately. LEGO’s missing-piece page requires a separate request for each set, even when the sets were purchased together.
You are missing too many pieces to list individually
Stop adding individual elements and call customer service. Prepare the unusual missing parts, bag number, set number, and purchase information so the agent can assess the scale of the problem.
A replacement has not arrived yet
Check the confirmation or dispatch email and the case details first. LEGO’s guidance does not establish a universal processing time or delivery promise, so do not rely on an assumed deadline. If the message requests additional information, respond through the case channel or contact customer service with the case number.
Country, purchase, and eligibility cautions
The replacement-parts and help pages used for these instructions are mainly LEGO U.S. pages. LEGO also exposes a missing-pieces workflow for India, but the available guidance does not establish that eligibility, shipping, fees, or every step is identical in every country. Open LEGO’s service page for the country where the package should be delivered and follow its current labels and requirements.
There is no universal replacement guarantee, time limit, shipping promise, or worldwide eligibility rule established in the guidance. A request can therefore depend on the set, the quantity missing, current stock, and the service rules in your market.
A practical checklist before you submit
- Set number copied from the box or instructions.
- Correct route selected: Missing pieces, Broken Bricks, phone support for a bag or many parts, or Pick a Brick for a lost older part.
- Element number, molded design number, color, shape, and quantity checked.
- Instruction step and inventory page consulted.
- Separate request prepared for each set.
- Receipt or order information available in case LEGO asks for it.
- Damaged original part retained if the claim is for a broken brick.
- Delivery country selected correctly.
- Confirmation email or case number saved.
How to prevent a second missing-piece problem
Once the issue is resolved, keep unopened numbered bags together and mark each bag as it is opened. Build over a light-colored tray so small elements are easier to spot, and return unused pieces to the correct bag or a labeled container between sessions. When dismantling a model, compare the parts against the instruction inventory before storing them. These habits do not change LEGO’s replacement rules, but they reduce the chance of confusing a misplaced part with a packing omission.
