Start by identifying the electric utility that serves your exact address; then check its current rate schedule and compare the charges against your own usage. Michigan does not currently offer residential customers an active choice among alternative electric suppliers: the Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC) says no licensed suppliers are marketing or enrolling residential customers.
Find the electric utility for your address
Use the MPSC’s Electricity consumer page and choose “Utility Provider Search” or “Service Area Map.” The search works by city or township, but a city name alone may not identify the utility near a service-area boundary. Confirm the result against the provider named on a recent bill.

The same page links “Compare Average Electric Rates” and “Compare Monthly Residential Bills.” These resources can provide broader context, but they do not replace the current tariff for a particular address, customer class, and usage pattern.

If you want to change the backlight time, you can press and hold "UP" and "DOWN" button at the same time to enter backlight time setting, then press "UP" and "DOWN" to select the backlight time (bL-0 =10 minutes, bL-1=1 hour, bL-2=4 hours, bL-3=8 hours, bL-4=always on), finally press the "COST" to save the backlight time settings
- Overload protection: When the power of the appliance exceeds the overload power, the LCD will display “OVERLOAD” to warn the user. All the buttons will quit working and can only be workable when you lower or remove the load power. The default overload power is 3680W and is adjustable from 0 to 3680W. In general, you need to set the overload power to 1800W before using. Just press the "function" button for more than 3 seconds to enter the setting
- Data Memory Function: The wattage meter will record your power consumption data when you remove it from socket, or remove appliances from the electricity monitor. You can directly see the last data when you use it next time. This function can also automatically save the data when there is a sudden power failure
Check the schedule’s effective date and eligibility conditions. Rates may depend on service type, usage band, time of use, or other qualifications. If the account is served by a member-regulated cooperative, use the co-op’s listed rate-book link; its rates are not MPSC-approved. For a municipal utility, ask the utility or governing body for its current schedule.
Check for changes newer than the rate book
The MPSC cautions that a rate book may not yet reflect a pending power supply cost recovery (PSCR) factor or a recently approved order. Review the Electric Orders and relevant case record, as the rate-book page directs, and check the utility’s own current rate page or notices before relying on a figure. Record the effective date and whether an adjustment is proposed, approved, or already in effect.

Compare the full bill, not just the energy price
For a useful comparison, use the same recent usage or bill profile for each option. A single advertised price per kilowatt-hour can omit fixed charges, usage tiers, time-of-use pricing, riders, PSCR factors, taxes, or surcharges. Separate the supply cost from delivery charges, and note any costs the published schedule excludes.

- Fixed or customer charges: Monthly amounts that may apply regardless of how much electricity the account uses.
- Energy charges: Per-kWh charges, including any tiers or time windows. For time-of-use rates, monthly kWh totals alone cannot show which option is cheaper; use time-stamped consumption if available.
- Riders and PSCR factors: Additional rate components that can change. Verify whether the figure is current and how it is applied.
- Taxes and surcharges: Include them where the documents permit, or state that your estimate excludes them. For example, a DTE rate card dated February 6, 2025 says it excludes applicable taxes and surcharges and may change by MPSC order; that dated card should not be treated as a current October 2026 rate.
- Eligibility and terms: Check customer class, meter or enrollment requirements, and any contract conditions if comparing a supplier offer.
For each eligible option, estimate the total for an identical usage profile: fixed charges plus applicable energy charges and other listed components. If you cannot calculate a component from the available schedule, identify it as excluded rather than presenting the estimate as a complete bill.

Understand who sets or approves the rate
The MPSC’s rate-book directory covers utilities with MPSC-approved rate books and separately lists member-regulated cooperatives. The MPSC says it does not regulate the retail rates of member-regulated electric cooperatives, although it retains jurisdiction over safety, interconnection, code of conduct, and customer choice. Municipal electric utilities generally are not subject to MPSC rate regulation, apart from a specified renewable-energy-plan filing requirement. See the MPSC’s utility contacts page for the distinctions and contact information.
That means the right source depends on the provider: use the MPSC rate book for a listed regulated utility, and the co-op or municipal utility for its current schedule where those rates are locally regulated.

Can Michigan residents switch electricity providers?
Not through the active residential enrollment process described by the MPSC. Its Electric Customer Choice page says no licensed alternative electric suppliers (AESs) are currently marketing or enrolling residential customers because participation is capped.
The program allows eligible business customers in Consumers Energy, DTE, UPPCO, UMERC, or Cloverland territory to seek an AES, subject to a cap of no more than 10% of an electric utility’s prior-calendar-year weather-adjusted retail sales. If the cap is full, applicants may be queued. Cloverland rates are not regulated by the MPSC. The MPSC’s Status of Electric Competition Report 2025 recorded approximately 5,517 participating customers and 5,101 queued as of December 2025; those are historical year-end figures, not a live queue count.

For customers who can enroll, the supplier’s energy price is unregulated, while the local utility continues to deliver electricity. As the MPSC puts it: “Your power supply will continue to be delivered by your local electric utility regardless of which alternative electric supplier you choose.” Before evaluating an offer, confirm eligibility, AES licensing for the territory, contract terms, and total estimated cost using the same usage profile as the utility option.
Quick Recap
A practical comparison checklist
- Enter the service address in the MPSC provider search or service-area map, then confirm the utility on a recent bill.
- Identify the provider type and applicable customer class; check any rate eligibility conditions.
- Open the utility’s current rate book or local schedule and note its effective date.
- Check recent MPSC orders, case records, PSCR factors, and utility notices for changes not yet reflected in the rate book.
- Compare fixed charges, energy rates by tier or time window, riders, delivery, and taxes or surcharges using the same usage profile.
- If considering an AES offer, verify that the customer and territory are eligible and compare all terms and charges, not only the advertised supply rate.
