The fastest way to find people after a move is to combine local institutions with interest-based searches. Check your municipality, library, community and recreation centres first; then search for your interests plus your city or neighbourhood on group and event listings. Using several routes matters because no single directory includes every local activity.
Before you attend, verify the address, schedule, participation requirements, organizer details and any fee. The exact programs and prices depend on your location and the individual group.

Start with the places that already serve your community
Local public institutions are usually the most reliable first stop because they publish activities intended for residents. Search your city or town website for community centre, recreation, activities, clubs and events. Municipal sites may list classes, leagues, workshops and calendars, or direct you to the staff who maintain them.
Libraries, community centres and recreation centres can reveal activities that do not appear in broad social searches. Look for both one-time events and repeating sessions. A library calendar might include a book club or conversation circle, while a recreation centre may list fitness, dance or sports activities. Availability varies by municipality, so search the specific venue rather than assuming every city offers the same program.

If the website is unclear, contact the centre directly. The Government of Canada’s community-connection guidance recommends contacting local community or recreation centres and City Hall when you are looking for activities. Ask where the current calendar is published, whether registration is required and which activities meet regularly.
Use a seven-step search sequence
- Define what you want to do. Write down two or three interests, such as casual sport, reading, games, music, arts, dancing, technology, a cultural activity or a professional topic. Also note whether you prefer a recurring club, a class, a league or a single event.
- Add your location. Combine the activity with your city, town, neighbourhood or postal area. Searches such as
beginner tennis clubs in [city],book clubs near [neighbourhood]orcommunity dance classes [city]are more useful than searching for “clubs” alone. - Check municipal and venue calendars. Review the city website, library calendar and community or recreation-centre pages. Search for recurring sessions as well as special events.
- Search interest-based group listings. Meetup describes location-based groups and events organized around hobbies, sports, health, technology, arts, games and career topics. Enter your location and browse several categories rather than relying on a single keyword. Local results depend on the area.
- Cross-check independent listings. Search local social-media groups and the community sections of local newspapers. Ontario newcomer guidance also recommends Eventbrite. These sources can surface individual events that a municipal calendar does not list.
- Compare the practical details. Record the meeting day, exact location, travel time, organizer, audience or skill requirements, registration process and stated cost. Distinguish an active recurring group from a one-off listing.
- Confirm before you go. Open the group or event’s own details shortly before attending. Check for changed times, room information, capacity limits, required equipment or forms, and any membership or event charge. If online information is incomplete, call or visit the venue.
Choose the right discovery route
Different sources reveal different kinds of activities. Use the route that matches the type of connection you want, then verify the listing with the organizer.
| Route | What it is useful for | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Municipal website or City Hall | Locally run programs, public calendars and contacts for community services | Current session dates, registration method, venue and eligibility |
| Libraries, community centres and recreation centres | Classes, conversation circles, sports, arts and other repeating activities hosted at a known venue | Whether the activity is recurring, available places, schedule and any participation rules |
| Interest-based platforms such as Meetup | Searching by topic and location across groups and events | Recent organizer activity, exact address, attendance instructions and organizer-set charges |
| Social-media groups | Neighbourhood recommendations and informal gatherings | Organizer identity, current date, public meeting details and whether the group is still active |
| Local newspaper community listings | Individual events and announcements that may not appear on city pages | Whether the event is a one-time activity, current contact details and registration requirements |
| Eventbrite | Event discovery, including a route specifically suggested by Ontario newcomer information | Organizer information, event date, location, capacity and ticket or registration conditions |
| Associations and organized sports | Leagues, clubs and groups connected to a sport, neighbourhood, culture or shared activity | Skill level, season dates, membership process, travel and total cost |
No route is a complete directory. A city may publish its own classes while a small association uses only social media; a newspaper listing may advertise a single event without representing an ongoing club.

The same interest can produce very different experiences. Include the format in your search so you do not spend time opening unsuitable listings.
For a repeating routine
Add terms such as weekly, league, class, regular meeting or season. Municipal recreation calendars, sports associations and venue programs are particularly useful here. A repeating session makes it easier to recognize familiar people over several meetings.

For low-pressure conversation
Try conversation circle, social group, book club, board games or neighbourhood group with your location. Read the description for the expected format: a structured class, a discussion group and an informal meet-up require different levels of participation.
For an activity-first introduction
Search the activity without using the word “social.” Organized sports, music, arts, dance and game clubs often create opportunities to meet people while everyone is focused on a shared task. The Government of Canada lists these categories, along with associations and neighbourhood groups, as examples of community connections.

For professional or learning interests
Include a subject such as technology, career, language, business or a specific skill. Meetup’s categories include technology and career topics, but local coverage differs, so compare those results with libraries, associations and community venues.
How to judge whether a listing is worth attending
A promising title is not enough. Use the listing to answer five practical questions before committing.
- Where is it? Confirm the full venue, room or meeting point and whether the location is practical by your available transport.
- When does it meet? Look for the date, start time, end time and recurrence. A calendar entry without a repeating schedule may be a one-off event.
- Who can participate? Check age range, experience level, language, registration rules or any equipment requirement stated by the organizer.
- Who is responsible? Identify the organizer or host and use the current contact method supplied in the listing if you need clarification.
- What will it cost? Meetup says most clubs listed on its service are free, but organizers may set membership fees or event costs. Treat that as a listing-specific question and confirm the amount, frequency and payment method with the group itself.
Save the listing or write down its details before leaving the page. If the date has passed, search the group name again rather than assuming it has stopped meeting.

Separate a one-time event from a real ongoing group
One-off events are useful introductions, but they do not automatically provide a continuing social circle. Look for a series of dates, a regular meeting pattern, a season schedule or a group page showing future activity. If a listing has only one date, ask the organizer whether another meeting is planned.

A monthly book club and a weekly sports league can both be ongoing, but they support different routines. Choose the schedule you can realistically attend; a nearby group you can visit consistently may be more useful than a highly relevant group that requires an impractical journey.
Associations and organized sports often have a defined season or membership process. Read those conditions before attending an introductory session so you know whether the first visit is open to newcomers or requires advance registration.
Make distance and transport part of the decision
Compare the actual journey, not just the city name. Two activities in the same municipality may be on opposite sides of town. Record the address, likely travel time, transfer requirements and the time you would need to return home. If a listing gives only a broad neighbourhood, contact the organizer for the exact venue.
Use location filters where available, then verify the result manually. Meetup supports discovery by location and interest, but its results do not establish that every club nearby is listed. Municipal and venue calendars may show activities closer to home even when a platform search produces a more distant result.

For a first visit, choose a place whose entrance and meeting point are easy to identify. If the event uses a large centre, ask which room or desk to use. This is a small detail, but it prevents arriving at the right building and missing the group.

Limited online results do not prove that no community exists. Change one variable at a time:
- Replace the city with your neighbourhood or a nearby municipality.
- Try a broader activity category, then narrow it after finding an active organizer.
- Search the venue name plus the activity instead of searching the activity alone.
- Look at local newspaper community pages and social-media groups.
- Call a library, recreation centre, community centre or City Hall and ask where current activities are posted.
- Check whether an association uses a season, age group or skill-level label that your original search omitted.
The Canadian government’s community-connection advice specifically includes online and social-media searches, local newspapers, visits or calls to community and recreation centres, and City Hall. Treat those as complementary routes rather than substitutes for one another.
Use Canada and Ontario guidance in the right context
The Government of Canada page is written for newcomers to Canada. Its suggestions—municipal information, libraries, community and recreation centres, sports leagues, associations, neighbourhood groups, cultural clubs, book clubs, game clubs, and music, arts or dance clubs—are practical search ideas that can be adapted elsewhere. Canadian eligibility rules or local program names should not be assumed to apply in another country.
Settlement.org’s Ontario guidance names Meetup, Facebook, Eventbrite, libraries and recreation centres as ways to meet people. That is Ontario-focused newcomer advice, not a guarantee that those services have equal coverage in every city. Use the same method in another location, but substitute the local institutions and calendars available there.

Prepare for the first visit
Once you have selected an event, reread the organizer’s instructions on the day of attendance. Confirm the address, start time, entry point, registration status and any stated fee or requirement. If the activity is hosted in a public building, allow time to find the correct room.
Bring only what the listing says you need. For a class or league, the organizer may specify equipment or forms; for a discussion or social meeting, the requirements may be minimal. Do not infer requirements that are not stated—ask the organizer when the information is missing.
Arrive with one simple question ready, such as “Is this the regular meeting?” or “How does a new participant join?” It helps you identify the host and understand how the group works without requiring you to make a large commitment immediately.

When several options look promising, score them using the same information rather than choosing from titles alone. This worksheet keeps the decision concrete:
| Question | Option A | Option B | Option C |
|---|---|---|---|
| Interest or activity fit | Write the specific activity | Write the specific activity | Write the specific activity |
| Recurring or one-time | Record the schedule | Record the schedule | Record the schedule |
| Distance and transport | Record venue and journey | Record venue and journey | Record venue and journey |
| Participation requirements | Record skill, registration or other conditions | Record skill, registration or other conditions | Record skill, registration or other conditions |
| Cost stated by organizer | Record amount or “not stated” | Record amount or “not stated” | Record amount or “not stated” |
| Organizer contact | Record the current contact | Record the current contact | Record the current contact |
Prefer the option that fits your available time, travel and participation level, not merely the one with the most attractive description. If a key cell is “not stated,” contact the organizer before relying on the listing.
Keep your search broad, then become selective
Start with several categories because your first search may miss the right vocabulary. You might discover that a “conversation circle” matches your goal better than a “social club,” or that an association lists an activity under a cultural or neighbourhood heading rather than a generic club category.
After identifying active organizers, narrow your choices by recurrence, distance, participation requirements and cost. Keep one backup option from a different discovery route—for example, a municipal class alongside an interest-based event—because schedules and listings change.
The most dependable process is therefore not finding one perfect directory. It is building a short list from public venues, interest searches, event listings and direct local contacts, then confirming the details with each organizer.
