Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsStart with an employer’s own careers page or a recognized government job resource, then verify the exact opening and the person contacting you before you share personal information. A listing on a job board, a convincing company logo, or a polished video interview does not prove that the opportunity is real: scammers routinely copy genuine employers’ names and alter or repost job advertisements.
The safest approach is a repeatable check. Confirm the role on the employer’s independently located website, confirm the recruiter through contact details you find yourself, and reject any process that asks you to pay, forward money, deposit a check, or provide sensitive data before a genuine hiring process.

Where to begin a remote-job search
Use sources that give you a direct path to an employer or public agency, rather than treating any single marketplace as an authenticity guarantee. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) identifies these US resources as sensible starting points:
| Starting point | What it is useful for | What it does not guarantee |
|---|---|---|
| USAJobs.gov | Federal government vacancies and their official application process. | That every remote-eligible listing suits your location, skills, or eligibility; read the individual announcement. |
| CareerOneStop | A US Department of Labor-sponsored resource for finding jobs and career information. | That an employer discovered through another channel is legitimate without further checking. |
| USA.gov | Links to federal, state, and local government employment resources. | That a link or listing outside the government site is authentic. |
These are starting points, not endorsements of every listing encountered elsewhere. For a private employer, search for the organization independently—for example, by typing its name into your browser or using a known, official domain—then navigate to its careers section. Do not use only the link supplied in an unsolicited message.

This guide is US-focused. If you live elsewhere, use your national or regional labor authority and the employer’s official careers page, and check your local reporting procedures rather than assuming US agencies can handle the case.
Verify the exact opening on the employer’s website
A real company name can be attached to a fake advertisement. The FTC has warned that scammers hijack job ads, reuse an old posting, or modify a genuine description before placing it on a job site or social network. Verification must therefore apply to the specific role, not merely to the company’s existence.
1. Find the company independently
- Open a new browser tab and locate the organization through a source you trust, not through the recruiter’s message or the advertisement’s contact button.
- Check the domain, spelling, and security of the site. A look-alike domain with an extra word, unusual spelling, or a different top-level domain deserves additional scrutiny.
- Use the site’s own navigation to reach Careers, Jobs, or Work With Us. Do not assume that a search-engine result or social-media profile is the official channel.
2. Match the listing details
Compare the title, duties, employment type, pay range, location eligibility, and application instructions with the message you received. A legitimate remote role should state where people may work; “remote” can mean US-only, certain states, a particular time zone, or occasional office attendance. Note whether the official page uses the same requisition number, recruiter name, and application route.

- Same geography: Confirm that your state or country is eligible and whether cross-border work is prohibited.
- Same process: The official page should explain how to apply, interview, and receive an offer.
- Same contact path: A request to reply to a personal mailbox or a different domain is a discrepancy to resolve.
3. Resolve discrepancies before applying
If the vacancy is missing, closed, materially different, or tied to another contact address, pause. Call or email the organization using contact information displayed on its official website and ask whether the role and recruiter are genuine. Do not use a phone number, email address, or messaging link supplied solely by the suspicious listing.
Check the recruiter and the way you were contacted
Scammers can impersonate a real employee or invent a recruiter’s identity. A familiar company name, branded email signature, or professional-looking invitation authenticates none of those things.

Confirm identity through an independent channel
Look for the recruiter on the employer’s staff directory or a professional profile, but treat a matching profile as a clue rather than proof; profiles can be copied. Ask the company’s publicly listed recruiting or human-resources contact to confirm that the person works there and is assigned to the role. Use a contact route you found independently.
Examine the message and sender address
Unexpected generic outreach, pressure to move immediately to an encrypted chat, and a personal email account are warning signs to investigate. None is conclusive by itself: small employers may use outside recruiters, and legitimate recruiters sometimes contact candidates first. The decisive question is whether the identity and assignment can be confirmed through the employer.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Search for complaints as clues, not verdicts
Search the recruiter’s and company’s names with terms such as scam, review, or complaint. Also try the literal phrase remote position when examining how the opportunity is described. For task-scam examples, the FTC uses wording such as optimization and product boosting. These searches can reveal patterns, but search results are not proof: complaints may be inaccurate, and a real company name does not authenticate an individual.
Do not send sensitive data early
Before a real interview and hiring process, be skeptical of requests for your Social Security number, driver’s-license image, bank-account details, or other identity and financial information. A legitimate employer can explain why information is needed and collect it through a verified onboarding system after you have established who is hiring you. If someone demands it during an initial chat or promises that an immediate offer depends on it, stop and verify through the company.
Recognize the main remote-work scam patterns
Hijacked or impersonated job listings
A scammer may copy a known employer’s name, alter a real advertisement, or repost an outdated vacancy. The goal is to move you away from the employer’s normal application system. An accurate logo and copied job description can make a false listing look unusually credible, which is why the independent careers-page check is essential.

Fake recruiters and rushed offers
An impostor may conduct a superficial interview by text, offer unusually fast approval, and then request personal or financial information. Urgency is a control tactic: it discourages you from checking the role. Slow the process down, verify the recruiter, and insist on a normal interview and documented job details.
Fake checks and equipment purchases
One common scheme sends you a check for equipment, software, or an alleged overpayment and instructs you to buy items, send money elsewhere, or return the difference. A bank may show the deposit as available before discovering that the check is counterfeit. When it bounces, you can be responsible for the money you forwarded or spent.
The FTC’s Consumer Advice alert How to avoid work-from-home job scams (June 2025) states: “No honest potential employer will ever send you a check and then tell you to send on part of the money, or to buy gift cards with it.” Do not deposit a check from an unverified employer, and never purchase gift cards or send a refund as a condition of employment.
Task scams and deposits to unlock earnings
Task scams often begin with an unexpected message promising easy online work, sometimes described as “optimization” or “product boosting.” An app or website displays supposed earnings, then requires you to deposit money—often cryptocurrency—to continue tasks or withdraw the balance. The displayed earnings are not real; the deposit is the theft mechanism. Do not transfer funds to unlock wages, improve a rating, or release a balance.
The FTC reported about $41 million in cryptocurrency losses to job scams in the first half of 2024, compared with about $21 million in all of 2023. Those figures cover the FTC’s reported cryptocurrency losses for those specific historical periods; they are not totals for all job-scam losses or current annual losses.

Other high-risk signals
- Pay that is far above the market for little or vague work.
- Duties that remain unclear after you ask reasonable questions.
- Pressure to decide immediately or keep the opportunity secret.
- Requests for upfront fees, training payments, cryptocurrency, gift cards, or purchases from a designated vendor.
- Instructions to receive and forward money, cash a check, or use your own account to move funds.
- Requests for identity or banking information before a verifiable interview and offer.
One signal may have an innocent explanation, but several together justify ending the conversation until the employer independently confirms every detail.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use a decision test before sharing information or accepting
Evaluate the opportunity on four independent dimensions. If a high-risk answer remains unresolved, do not proceed.
| Question | Reassuring evidence | Stop or verify when |
|---|---|---|
| Does the opening appear on the employer’s official site? | The same current role, location eligibility, duties, and application route are present. | The role is absent, closed, materially changed, or available only through the message. |
| Can the recruiter be confirmed independently? | The employer confirms the person and provides a matching contact path. | The sender uses an unverified personal address, refuses normal verification, or relies only on a copied profile. |
| Are the job and process specific and consistent? | Pay, duties, interview stages, employment status, and work location are clearly explained and remain consistent. | Pay is extraordinary, duties are vague, or the story changes when you ask questions. |
| Does anyone ask for money or sensitive data prematurely? | No payment, onward transfer, or unnecessary identity and banking request occurs before verified onboarding. | You must pay, deposit a check, forward funds, buy gift cards, make a cryptocurrency deposit, or surrender sensitive data to continue. |
Do not let a “green” result in one row cancel a red flag in another. A real company can be impersonated, and a genuine job board can carry a fraudulent advertisement.
A practical verification workflow
- Save the evidence. Keep the original URL, message headers, sender address, job description, phone number, and any payment instructions. Screenshots can help if the listing disappears.
- Pause communication. Do not click additional links or open attachments while the opportunity is unverified. Do not provide your Social Security number, driver’s-license image, bank details, passwords, or one-time codes.
- Locate the employer independently. Use the organization’s known website or a government resource, then navigate to Careers or Jobs.
- Match the vacancy. Check title, requisition number, duties, pay, location eligibility, employment status, and application method. Confirm that the role is still open.
- Confirm the recruiter. Contact the organization using a phone number or email address published on its official site. Ask whether the recruiter and vacancy are genuine.
- Investigate warning signs. Search the names with
scam, review, orcomplaint; treat results as leads, not authentication. - Validate the interview and offer. Expect a coherent interview with job-specific questions, written terms, and a normal onboarding route. A chat-only “interview” followed by an instant offer warrants a pause.
- Reject payment and money movement. Never pay to obtain a job, deposit an employer’s check and send money onward, or pay personal funds to unlock task earnings.
- Apply through the verified route. Enter information only in the employer’s confirmed application or onboarding system. Use a unique password and enable multifactor authentication if the service offers it.
What to do if you were targeted or lost money
If you have not paid
Stop replying through the suspicious channel, block the sender, and preserve the messages and listing. Do not “test” the employer by sending a small payment or a partial identity document. If you disclosed a password, change it anywhere it was reused and turn on multifactor authentication.
If you sent money
Contact the payment provider immediately and ask whether the transaction can be stopped or reversed. The sooner you report a bank transfer, card payment, wire, cryptocurrency transaction, gift-card purchase, or payment-app transfer, the more options the provider may have. Follow its fraud process and keep the case number.
Best Value
Report the incident
Report the job scam to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. The FTC’s job-scam guidance also identifies your state attorney general as another reporting route. Include the employer name being impersonated, recruiter details, URLs, payment instructions, dates, and transaction records. Reporting helps investigators connect repeated campaigns, even when recovery is not possible.
Questions that often arise
Is a listing on a well-known job site safe?
No. Scammers can place false or modified ads on employment sites and social media, and they can use a legitimate company’s name. Verify the role on the employer’s official careers page.
Can a personal email address prove a recruiter is fake?
No. It is a warning sign to investigate, not conclusive proof. Confirm the person and role through contact details you obtained independently from the employer.
Recommended Free Tools
What if a deposited check appears to clear?
Do not spend or forward the money. A counterfeit check can appear available before the bank discovers the fraud, leaving you responsible for funds sent to the scammer.
Are cryptocurrency payments ever normal for remote work?
An instruction to deposit cryptocurrency to unlock tasks or withdraw displayed earnings is a task-scam pattern identified by the FTC. Do not pay to receive wages.
