A familiar job-board listing or convincing recruiter message is not proof that a vacancy is real. Never pay to get a job, deposit an employer’s check and send money onward, or pay to unlock earnings.
Where to look for legitimate remote administrative jobs
Start with the organization you want to work for: open its official website and look for its careers or jobs section. For federal government openings in the United States, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) identifies USAJobs.gov as the official source. For other employers, use their own career pages or trusted public job sources.

A posting on a well-known job platform is a lead, not verification. Scammers have impersonated employers and copied or hijacked legitimate listings. Check that the exact role appears on the employer’s official site, or contact the organization using details you find independently on that site. The FTC explains how fake postings can use real company names in its guidance on hijacked job ads and phony job postings.
How to verify a remote assistant opening and recruiter
- Find the vacancy independently. Navigate to the employer’s official site yourself and check for the same title and description. If it is not listed, ask the employer about it using a phone number or email address found on that site, not just contact details in the message.
- Check the sender’s identity. Compare the recruiter’s email address with the employer’s genuine web domain. A personal email account, an unfamiliar or look-alike domain, or an account that cannot be confirmed through the company deserves extra scrutiny.
- Look for a credible hiring process. Read the duties, location or work-eligibility requirements, compensation and schedule in the official posting. Be cautious about vague responsibilities, unusually high pay claims, pressure to accept quickly, or an interview conducted only through chat or text.
- Hold back sensitive information. Do not provide your Social Security number, driver’s-license details or bank information in response to an unsolicited approach or before you have verified the employer and opening.
- Search for independent warnings. Search the company and recruiter names alongside words such as “scam,” “review” and “complaint.” A lack of complaints does not establish that an offer is genuine.
No single clue proves an offer is fraudulent. The FTC describes these as warning signs, not a sure-fire test; pause and verify the opening through an independent, official channel when they appear. Its advice on checking a recruiter and job offer and avoiding remote-job scams and identity theft provides further guidance.

Warning signs common in remote-job scams
Requests for money, checks or paid training
A real job should not require you to pay to get hired or get paid. Do not pay for a starter kit, training, certification, job access, equipment or a supposed fee in exchange for promised employment. The FTC warns that job seekers can lose money to work-from-home job scams that use these tactics.
Be especially wary of an employer who sends a check for equipment and tells you to return part of the money or pay a designated vendor. The check may later turn out to be fake, while money you sent is gone. Do not deposit the check or forward money. If you already deposited a suspicious check, contact your bank promptly and explain what happened. The FTC covers this fake equipment-check scam.

Unsolicited texts, task schemes and reshipping
An unexpected message about a remote role is not proof of a real opening. In an April 2026 alert, the FTC described fake recruiters who start with unsolicited texts and may later ask for money or personal information. It also warns about “task” or rating schemes that offer simple online work, then require you to deposit your own money or pay to unlock supposed earnings. Do not pay to get paid. Compare openings without mistaking a listing for proof
When you have several possible roles, assess each one against the same checks. These checks help you decide what to verify; they cannot establish that any particular employer is hiring now or that a role is available to you remotely.

Openings, pay and remote-work eligibility change. Confirm those details on the employer’s current official posting rather than relying on an old listing or a general claim about a company.

What to do if an offer looks suspicious
- Stop communicating through links or contact details in the suspicious message.
- Do not send money, deposit a check from the sender, or disclose sensitive information.
- Verify the vacancy by contacting the employer through its official website.
- Report the offer to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov and to the platform where you found the listing.
- If you disclosed identity information, use IdentityTheft.gov for recovery guidance.
