Choose the right kind of help first
Emergency assistance is not one nationwide benefit with one application. Different services cover different needs and may provide a payment, a direct service, a referral or information only. Identify the immediate problem before sharing personal information or responding to an unsolicited offer.
| Need | Best starting route | Geography | What it can do | Important limit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Rent, utilities or other household bills | USAGov benefit finder, then your state or local program | Federal, state and local programs | Find possible benefits and application instructions | Every program sets its own eligibility rules, process and deadlines |
| Immediate local housing leads | Call 211 or search state and local emergency rental assistance | Service-area specific; 211 serves most U.S. areas | Connects you with local social services, housing referrals and sometimes community organizations | 211 does not guarantee funds or identical services in every locality |
| Homelessness or shelter tonight | USAGov emergency-housing resources | Local shelter and housing systems | HUD-related shelter and housing contacts, public housing agencies and specialized lines | Availability and eligibility are local; specialized lines serve defined groups |
| Food, health, jobs, unemployment or cash assistance | USAGov benefit finder | Program specific | Discovery of official programs and next steps | It is a finder, not an approval or payment service |
| Questionable job or donation request | Independent verification, then FTC reporting if appropriate | Nationwide consumer guidance | Helps establish whether the contact is genuine and documents suspected fraud | Branding, caller ID, a platform listing or an offer letter is not proof of legitimacy |
Keep these routes separate. A benefits finder cannot authenticate a recruiter, and a charity referral is not a guarantee that a particular organization is safe. Verify the specific program, employer or charity before sending money or sensitive data.

Find legitimate benefits and emergency financial help
1. Search the USAGov benefit finder
- Open Find government benefits and financial help.
- Select the needs that match your situation, such as housing and utilities, jobs and unemployment, food, health, or welfare and cash assistance.
- Read the individual program’s eligibility criteria, required documents, application method and deadline. USAGov explains that each program has its own eligibility rules, application process and deadlines.
- Continue to the program’s own government page or agency. Do not assume that appearing in a search means you qualify or that funds are immediately available.
Have practical details ready: your location, household size, income information, housing or utility account details, identification and any eviction or shutoff notice. Only provide information on the official program website or to an agency you contacted through a verified number.
2. Get local rent and utility leads through 211
USAGov’s emergency-rent guidance directs people to call 211 or search for state and local emergency rental assistance. Tell the 211 specialist the county or ZIP code, the type of bill, the amount and due date, and whether you face an eviction, utility shutoff or loss of housing. Ask which agencies are accepting applications now, what documents they require and whether an appointment is needed.
In most U.S. areas, 211 connects callers with local social services and emergency-housing referrals. A local agency may also refer someone who does not qualify for a government program to a community or nonprofit organization. That referral is a lead, not a blanket endorsement: independently confirm the organization’s name, address, application process and payment instructions before sharing data or paying anything.
3. Use emergency-housing resources when you may lose shelter
If you are already homeless or may lose housing immediately, use USAGov’s emergency-housing page rather than waiting for a rent application. It points to HUD local shelter and housing resources, continuing-care providers and public housing agencies. These systems may have different intake rules and waiting lists, so ask what can help tonight versus what requires a longer application.

- Veterans: the National Call Center for Homeless Veterans is a specialized route.
- Young people: the National Runaway Safeline is intended for runaway and homeless youth.
- Everyone else: use local shelter and housing contacts listed through USAGov or 211 and explain any immediate safety or accessibility need.
Do not assume a specialized line or shelter serves every applicant, and do not pay a person who promises to move you ahead of a public-housing or shelter list.
Recognize “free government money” and grant traps
Promises of instant government grants, free cash or guaranteed emergency money are common scam themes. USAGov warns that “free money” offers are often scams and directs people to its benefit finder and official government loan or grant information instead.
Government programs still require an eligibility decision, an application and often a deadline. A request for a processing fee, gift card, cryptocurrency, wire transfer or payment to “unlock” a grant is a fraud warning. Do not send your Social Security number, bank login or identity documents to a person who contacted you unexpectedly.

Verify a job before you apply, interview or accept an offer
Use a separate channel you find yourself
A genuine-looking listing, polished logo, video interview or formal offer letter can be copied. Search the company and recruiter name with words such as “scam,” “review” or “complaint.” Then open the organization’s official website by entering the address yourself and look for the same vacancy on its careers page. Use a telephone number or email address published there—not the contact details in the original message—to ask whether the recruiter and position are real.
Do not rely on caller ID: numbers can be spoofed. A familiar job platform only shows where a listing appeared; it does not prove who posted it. Ask for the legal employer name, physical or mailing address, duties, pay structure and normal hiring steps. Refusal to answer basic questions or pressure to decide immediately is a reason to stop.
Reject every pay-to-work arrangement
The Federal Trade Commission’s Job Scams guidance states: “Honest employers, including the federal government, will never ask you to pay to get a job.” Do not pay for a position, required equipment, training, background check, placement or access to payroll. The FTC also warns about job-placement firms that charge candidates for questionable services; federal and postal job applications are free.
Understand the fake-check pattern
A scammer may send a check and instruct you to deposit it, keep a portion, buy equipment or gift cards, and forward the rest. Banks can make deposited funds appear available before the check is fully verified. If it later bounces, you can owe the bank while the money you forwarded is gone. Never purchase gift cards, send cryptocurrency, wire funds or return money from an unexpected employer check. Contact your bank’s fraud department immediately if you already deposited one.

Treat unexpected job texts as suspicious
In its April 2026 alert, the FTC describes fake recruiters impersonating familiar companies through text, WhatsApp or Telegram. They may begin with a generic message and ask you to reply “YES” or “INTERESTED,” then introduce a fake-check or task scheme. Ignore unexpected generic job messages, do not click their links, and never pay to get a job or to get paid. If you want to pursue the opportunity, locate the employer independently and start a new conversation through its verified careers contact.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Evaluate donation requests without being rushed
Donation fraud often exploits a real disaster, disease, veteran, child or community emergency. The FTC’s Charity Fraud guidance identifies three especially useful tests:
- Pressure: the caller insists you must donate immediately or claims a limited-time match.
- Evasion: the solicitor will not provide written information, explain how funds are used or identify the organization clearly.
- Risky payment: the request is for cash, gift cards, cryptocurrency or a wire transfer.
Ask for the charity’s legal name, website, mailing address, mission and written explanation of the appeal. End the call and research those details independently. Type the organization’s web address yourself or use a trusted government or community source rather than a link supplied by a stranger. Do not treat caller ID as proof of identity; impostors can spoof it.

If you decide to give, use a payment method and address you independently confirmed. Keep the solicitation, receipts, messages and transaction records. A legitimate organization should allow time for questions and should not punish you for declining.

Spot impersonation of agencies, companies and charities
USAGov’s imposter-scam guidance explains that criminals may pose as government agencies, businesses or charities and spoof caller ID. Common tactics include a threat of arrest or loss of benefits, a demand to “confirm” your identity by reading a one-time code, or instructions to move money to a supposedly safe account.
- Stop the conversation and do not press buttons, install software or share a verification code.
- Find the agency or company’s contact information from an official website, bill or statement you already trust.
- Call back using that independent number and ask whether the contact was genuine.
- Save the phone number, email, website, payment details and message screenshots for a report.
Tax-related impersonation should be routed to the IRS through its official reporting process. Other imposter scams can be reported to the FTC. A report helps investigators; it does not guarantee that money will be recovered.
What to do if you already paid or shared information
- Contact the payment provider immediately. Tell your bank, card issuer, money-transfer service or gift-card company that the transaction was fraudulent and ask what reversal or freeze options exist. Speed matters, but do not assume a reversal is possible.
- Secure accounts. Change reused passwords, enable multifactor authentication, sign out unknown sessions and watch bank, card and credit activity. If you gave an identity document or Social Security number, ask the relevant official identity-protection service what additional steps apply.
- Stop communicating with the scammer. Do not pay a second “recovery” fee or trust anyone who promises guaranteed reimbursement.
- Report the conduct. Submit suspected scams to ReportFraud.ftc.gov or call 1-877-FTC-HELP, as recommended in the FTC charity-fraud guidance. Use the IRS route for tax imposters and any specialized reporting channel named by the impersonated agency.
- Warn affected institutions. If a fake recruiter used a real company’s name, notify that company through its independently found website so it can investigate the impersonation.
A practical decision checklist
Before applying for assistance
- Have I started at USAGov, 211 or another official agency rather than an unsolicited “grant” message?
- Do I know whether the contact offers a benefit, direct service, referral or information only?
- Have I checked the program’s location, eligibility, documents and deadline?
- Has anyone asked for a fee, gift card, wire, cryptocurrency or bank login?
Before accepting a job
- Did I find the vacancy on the employer’s independently located careers site?
- Did I verify the recruiter through a published company contact?
- Am I being asked to pay, deposit a check, forward money or buy gift cards?
- Did an unexpected text or chat message create urgency before I could verify it?
Before donating
- Can the solicitor provide written identification and explain how funds are used?
- Have I researched the organization without using the caller’s links or phone number?
- Can I decline and take time to decide?
- Is the requested payment cash, gift card, cryptocurrency or wire transfer?
Where to report and how to preserve evidence
Use ReportFraud.ftc.gov or 1-877-FTC-HELP for suspected job, charity and imposter scams. Include dates, names, phone numbers, email addresses, websites, payment instructions and copies of messages. Do not forward malware or click a suspicious link merely to collect evidence. For tax impersonation, follow the IRS reporting path identified by USAGov. Keep confirmation numbers and provide them to your bank or other payment provider.

Quick Recap
Key boundaries to remember
- USAGov is a discovery point; the individual program decides eligibility, process and timing.
- 211 is a local referral network available in most U.S. areas, not a promise of rent money or uniform coverage.
- A referral to a community or nonprofit organization still requires your own verification.
- Legitimate employers do not charge you to get hired, and a deposited check is not proof that funds are good.
- Urgency, evasiveness and high-risk payment methods are reasons to pause a donation.
- Outside the United States, use your own government’s benefits and consumer-protection services because these routes are U.S.-specific.
