One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchA paywall on a journal’s website does not necessarily mean there is no legal free copy. Start with the paper’s DOI or exact title, then check Unpaywall, Google Scholar’s “All versions,” and relevant repositories. Before relying on a file, verify which version it is and what its record says about rights or licensing.
Find a legal copy: a practical search sequence
-
Identify the exact paper
Copy its DOI if you have one. Otherwise search the exact title, preferably alongside an author’s name. This helps distinguish the paper from similarly titled works.

Check Unpaywall
Unpaywall’s browser extension can flag an indexed open version while you view an article page. MIT Libraries describes it as a way to find legally available manuscript versions and final published articles when permitted or when the journal is open access. Utrecht University Library describes the service as indexing articles made publicly available through repositories. MIT Libraries · Utrecht University Library

Search Google Scholar and check “All versions”
Search the exact title in Google Scholar. If the result includes “All versions,” open the list and look for links to a repository or an openly available publisher page. Google Scholar says it groups versions when it identifies them and selects the publisher’s full authoritative text as the primary version when available. Its documentation also notes technical problems can leave gaps, so not finding a copy there does not establish that none exists. Google Scholar: Publishers

Search repositories for the paper or author
Look in the author’s university repository and in a subject repository suited to the field. Examples cited by MIT Libraries include arXiv, OSF Preprints, DSpace@MIT, PubMed Central, and SSRN. PubMed Central is a repository route for biomedical and life-sciences articles; preprint servers may be useful in fields they cover. UCL also lists CORE and OpenDOAR among routes to open research. A search result or repository record should be checked to establish which version it contains. UCL Library Services
-
Try another discovery service
If the first searches fail, try Open Access Button or CORE. Utrecht University Library also lists OpenAlex, Google Scholar, and PubMed as search routes that may link to full text. These tools have different indexing coverage, so a result in one is not guaranteed to appear in another. Utrecht University Library · UCL Library Services

Ask the author or your library
If you still cannot locate a copy, check the author’s webpage or contact the author to ask whether they can share a version. MIT Libraries notes that most publishers allow authors to responsibly share their own publications, but the version and terms still matter. You can also ask your library about an article request or interlibrary loan. The Swiss Consortium of Academic Libraries lists both author and library requests as fallback routes. Eligibility, cost, and timing depend on the institution and circumstances. MIT Libraries · swissuniversities: How to get the article?

Know which version you found
“Free to read” does not tell you whether a file is peer reviewed, whether it matches the published article, or whether you may reuse it. Records may link to one of several versions:
Rank #3
- Scanner type: Document
- Connectivity technology: USB
- With Auto Scan Mode, the scanner automatically detects what you're scanning
- Digitize documents and images
- Preprint: A manuscript posted before peer review. MIT Libraries says preprints are not peer reviewed and may differ from the eventual published paper.
- Accepted manuscript: The peer-reviewed manuscript accepted by the journal, usually without the publisher’s final formatting. MIT Libraries describes it as incorporating changes made after peer review.
- Version of record: The final article as it appears in the journal. A repository or author site may host this version, but publisher terms can restrict posting it unless the article or journal is open access.
MIT Libraries summarizes the accepted manuscript as “the version of the article that has been peer-reviewed and accepted by the journal but is not in the publisher’s formatting.” Its guidance was updated August 11, 2026. MIT Libraries: How to find openly accessible articles
Check provenance, rights, and what you can do with the file
Prefer a file linked from a recognized publisher or repository record. Check the record for the version, publication details, licence, or sharing conditions; compare the title, authors, and text with the published citation. Cite the version you actually consulted. A file’s availability for reading does not by itself grant permission to redistribute it, republish it, or reuse it for every purpose. The applicable terms depend on the work, licence, repository conditions, and relevant law.

If no search result appears
Treat an unsuccessful search as a reason to try another route, not proof that no legal copy exists. Google Scholar explicitly acknowledges technical coverage gaps, and institutional or subject repositories may not be indexed by every discovery service. Try the author’s institution or a field-specific repository, then use an author or library request. Do not rely on an unauthorized download merely because it is easy to find; these routes are intended to locate lawful access.
