How do I find a job that will hire me with a felony? Start by treating your record as one factor—not a universal ban. Use a local workforce or reentry program, search with “fair chance” and “second chance” terms, check federal openings on USAJOBS, and compare each job’s duties and legal requirements with your record. Prepare a short, truthful explanation of your qualifications, and check any third-party background report for errors. Rules differ by state, city, offense, sentence history and job, so this is general U.S. information rather than legal advice.
If you are searching for “second chance jobs near me,” remember that a label is only a starting point. A fair-chance employer may still have legally required restrictions, licensing rules or job-specific safety concerns. Your goal is to identify openings where your current skills and circumstances fit the actual requirements, not to find a promise that every applicant with a record will be hired.

A criminal record does not automatically end your job search
The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) states: “An arrest or conviction record is not an automatic disqualifier for most jobs with the federal government or federal contractors.” The EEOC’s job-seeker resource explains that eligibility depends on the particular record, the duties of the job, applicable laws and the employer’s process.
An arrest is not proof that a person committed a crime. An employer may consider the conduct underlying an arrest only when it is relevant to whether the person is fit for the role. A conviction can matter differently from an arrest, but neither label tells you the result by itself. Time since the offense, completion of a sentence, rehabilitation and the nature of the work can all affect an employer’s assessment.

State and local fair-chance rules also vary. Some delay when an employer may ask about criminal history; others regulate how a record can be considered. Licensing, bonding, driving, security and work-with-vulnerable-person rules can create additional barriers for particular jobs. Check the rule that applies where you will work and read the exact vacancy announcement before assuming a position is open or closed.
Separate the facts of your record from assumptions about what an employer will see. Note the offense or arrest date, final disposition, sentence-completion date and any later supervision or treatment. A report may contain a dismissed charge, an arrest with no conviction or another person’s case. Having these details organized helps you answer accurately and spot errors without volunteering information that the application does not request.
How to find jobs that hire people with criminal records
Use several channels at the same time. No search term proves that an employer accepts every record, and no named employer can promise a job to every applicant. The following sequence gives you the most useful information early while preserving time for applications.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
1. Get local help before applying widely
Contact an American Job Center, a state or local workforce-development office, or a reentry employment provider. Ask specifically for:
- Current vacancies where participating employers have hired people with records.
- Training, résumé and interview assistance.
- Transportation, identification, clothing or work-readiness support.
- Help checking occupational licenses, driving requirements or other barriers.
- Referrals to employers and programs familiar with fair-chance hiring.
- Information about Federal Bonding, employer incentives and available training funds.
The EEOC directs job seekers to the Department of Labor’s Reentry Employment Opportunities program and the National Reentry Resource Center. Availability and eligibility are local, so confirm what is operating in your county or state through the EEOC resource page. Ask the provider how recently its employer list was updated, what documents you need and whether it can help you contact a licensing board or transportation program.
2. Search with targeted language
On job boards and employer career pages, combine the job title and location with discovery terms such as:
- “fair chance”
- “second chance”
- “fair chance employer”
- “record-friendly”
For example, search warehouse associate fair chance or maintenance technician second chance Chicago. Try the same terms on an employer’s own careers page and in a local workforce portal. Treat these phrases as leads, not guarantees. Read the posting for actual duties, screening language, license requirements and the point at which the employer asks about criminal history. If the posting is unclear, use its listed human-resources contact to ask which qualifications are mandatory and when a background inquiry occurs; do not assume a vague answer overrides a statute or licensing rule.
3. Search public-sector openings, including federal jobs
Use USAJOBS’ criminal-record eligibility guidance and search the site for roles that match your skills. USAJOBS says people with criminal records can apply to most federal jobs. A statute or regulation can still bar a person with a particular offense from a particular position, so every announcement must be read separately.

Federal agencies and federal contractors generally delay covered criminal-history questions until after a conditional offer, subject to exceptions. The federal Fair Chance to Compete for Jobs Act framework does not make every federal role available to every applicant; it changes the timing and handling of covered inquiries. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission describes its fair-chance implementation and exceptions on its Fair Chance to Compete for Jobs Act page.
On USAJOBS, compare the announcement’s “Requirements,” “Qualifications,” “Conditions of Employment,” suitability and security sections before completing lengthy questionnaires. Save the announcement because requirements can be difficult to reconstruct after it closes. If a question asks about a conviction, answer precisely as worded and provide dates or dispositions when requested. If you are unsure whether an exception applies, use the announcement’s contact information or ask a workforce counselor rather than guessing.
4. Check role-specific barriers before investing time
Make a short “eligibility check” for each opening. Verify whether the exact role or jurisdiction has:
Recommended Free Tools
- A statute or regulation tied to the offense or position.
- An occupational-license rule, professional-board review or mandatory disclosure.
- A security-clearance or sensitive-information requirement.
- A driving-record requirement for vehicles or commercial driving.
- A bonding or financial-responsibility condition.
- Restrictions involving children, older adults, patients or other vulnerable populations.
These are examples of issues to verify, not a list of universal exclusions. Ask the licensing board, fair-employment agency, workforce counselor or employer’s human-resources contact for the rule that actually applies. Keep a copy of the posting and any written answer. Check whether the rule concerns the type of offense, a time period, the completion of sentence or a formal waiver; do not rely on a general internet statement about an entire occupation.
5. Build a job-focused explanation
Prepare a concise response for the stage when disclosure is legally or procedurally required. Do not volunteer a full personal history on an initial application unless the form or law requires it. A useful structure is:
- State the relevant fact accurately, without minimizing or exaggerating it.
- Give the date and explain that the sentence or supervision is complete if that is true.
- Describe what has changed: steady work, education, treatment, training, community service or other rehabilitation.
- Connect your current skills and references to the job’s essential duties.
- Return the conversation to how you will perform safely and reliably.
For example: “The conviction was in 2018, and I completed supervision in 2021. Since then I have completed forklift training, worked two years in a distribution center and can provide my supervisor as a reference. I understand the safety requirements of this position and can meet its schedule.” Change the wording to fit your facts; never use an explanation that is not true. The EEOC notes that information about work history, education, training, references, community support and rehabilitation can make a difference in some hiring decisions.
Keep the explanation short enough to deliver consistently on an application, phone screen and interview. Do not speculate about facts you cannot verify or blame another person. If the employer asks for documents, provide only what is requested and retain a copy. A reference who can describe your attendance, safety practices and current conduct may be more useful than a general character statement.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems6. Check background-report accuracy
If an employer uses a third-party reporting company, the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) process gives you specific protections. The employer generally must obtain your written permission before ordering the report. If the employer may reject you because of information in it, you should receive a copy of the report and a summary of your rights before the final adverse decision.

Compare the report with your court records and personal documents. Look for another person’s case, duplicate entries, an outdated disposition, a charge reported as a conviction, or a record that does not belong in the jurisdiction. Dispute errors with the reporting company, keep proof of the dispute and tell the employer promptly that the information is inaccurate. The joint EEOC and Federal Trade Commission background-check guide explains the employer’s obligations and the applicant’s rights.
Background-check protections apply to third-party reports; they do not turn every employer question into an FCRA issue. Read the consent form to see who prepared the report and what information it covers. If you receive a pre-adverse notice, use the time provided to identify specific errors and submit supporting records. Keep the report, rights notice, dispute confirmation and final decision together in case an agency needs them.
7. Preserve evidence and seek help quickly if screening appears unlawful
Save the job posting, application, consent form, background report, pre-adverse notice, emails, text messages and notes of conversations. If you believe an employer relied on inaccurate information or treated your record in a discriminatory way, contact the EEOC or your state or local fair-employment agency promptly. The EEOC says many private-sector and state or local claims have a 180-day filing deadline, extended to 300 days in some jurisdictions. Federal applicants and employees generally have 45 days to contact an equal-employment-opportunity counselor. These are general time limits, not a determination that any particular claim exists; an agency can explain which deadline applies.
When you contact an agency, describe the employer, job title, location, application date, questions asked, what happened after any report and why the information appears inaccurate or unrelated to the job. An agency can explain whether it has jurisdiction and what filing steps apply. Do not wait for a promised callback from an employer if a deadline may be running.
How to compare a “second chance” opening with your situation
Before applying—or before accepting a conditional offer—evaluate the role on the same five questions. This prevents a friendly-sounding label from hiding a requirement that affects you.
| Question | What to examine |
|---|---|
| What are the essential duties? | Consider contact with people, money, property, vehicles, children or patients, and access to sensitive information. |
| Is there a rule tied to the exact record? | Look for statutes, licensing rules, security requirements, bonding conditions and written employer policies that apply to this position. |
| How much time has passed? | Record the offense date, release or sentence-completion date and any later training or stable employment. |
| When and how broadly will the employer ask? | Read the application, interview instructions, consent form and conditional-offer language. Note whether the inquiry covers arrests, convictions, pending matters, dates or dispositions. |
| Can you explain your circumstances? | Check whether the process offers an individualized review or a chance to correct information before a final decision. |
These factors reflect the EEOC’s job-relatedness framework; they do not predict a particular hiring outcome. A role involving money or vulnerable people is not automatically forbidden, and a “fair chance” label does not override a statutory licensing bar.
Use the comparison as a decision tool, not as a scorecard. Two jobs with the same title may differ in driving, cash handling, client contact or access to records. A position with closer supervision or less sensitive access may raise different questions than a similar role with independent control of money or confidential information. Record the answer to each question so you can explain your choice to a counselor and avoid repeating applications that cannot meet a mandatory requirement.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
- The nature and seriousness of the offense. A record involving conduct unrelated to the work may raise different questions from one closely connected to an essential duty.
- Time passed since the offense or completion of the sentence. Consider both the age of the conduct and what has happened since.
- The nature of the job. Duties, workplace setting, supervision, access to property or information and contact with the public can matter.
The guidance discusses individualized assessment as one way to consider a person’s circumstances and additional information. It is not a rule that every employer must always conduct an individualized assessment. State and local laws may impose their own procedures, and some federal or state laws can bar particular people from particular jobs.
An arrest alone is not proof of criminal conduct. An employer may look into the underlying conduct only when it is relevant to fitness for the job, and should not treat an arrest as equivalent to a conviction. Read the EEOC’s full Title VII enforcement guidance for the agency’s analysis.
Can I get a federal job with a criminal record?
Often, you can apply. USAJOBS says most federal jobs are open to applicants with criminal records, while acknowledging exceptions created by law for particular offenses and positions. Start with the announcement’s “Requirements,” “Qualifications,” “Conditions of Employment” and security or suitability sections. Follow the application’s instructions exactly and answer a criminal-history question truthfully when it is asked at the permitted stage.

Agencies can evaluate suitability, security, licensing and job-specific statutory restrictions. If an announcement is unclear, use the contact information in that announcement or ask a workforce counselor to help you identify the controlling requirement.
Federal and contractor fair-chance timing rules have exceptions, so the absence of an early question is not permission to omit information later. Keep track of which agency issued the announcement and whether the job requires a clearance, financial responsibility or contact with protected populations. Those details determine which rule or exception may apply.

Federal Bonding Program
The EEOC lists the Federal Bonding Program as a resource. It can cover the first six months of employment at no cost to the job applicant or employer. Coverage and administration are handled through the program and state partners, so ask a workforce center whether it is available and whether the particular job qualifies. Do not present bonding as a guarantee of hiring or assume that every applicant is eligible.
Work Opportunity Tax Credit
The Work Opportunity Tax Credit (WOTC) is an employer tax credit for certain targeted groups, including some formerly incarcerated people and people previously convicted of a felony. It is an incentive for an eligible employer, not a payment to the job seeker and not proof that a position is open. Eligibility, certification and filing rules can change; employers should verify current details with the appropriate administrator.

A practical application checklist
Use this checklist for each opening rather than sending the same application everywhere:
- Save the posting and note the closing date, location and essential duties.
- Identify contact with money, property, vehicles, sensitive information or vulnerable people.
- Check licensing, bonding, driving, security and statutory restrictions for that role.
- Determine when the employer asks about records and what kinds of records it lists.
- Tailor your résumé to measurable skills, training, attendance, safety and relevant work history.
- Line up references who can speak to reliability and current ability.
- Prepare a brief, truthful explanation only for the stage when disclosure is required.
- Keep copies of consent forms, reports, notices and communications.
- Dispute inaccurate third-party information immediately and notify the employer.
- Contact an EEOC or state/local fair-employment office quickly if you suspect unlawful screening.
The most effective search is a repeated cycle: get local guidance, find several plausible openings, test each against its actual requirements, present current qualifications clearly, and protect your rights if a report is wrong. A record can create real limits for some jobs, but it is not a universal answer of “no.”
Frequently Asked Questions
Will a felony automatically disqualify me from every job?
No. Eligibility depends on the record, the job’s duties, applicable statutes or licensing rules, time passed and the employer’s lawful process. Some roles have specific legal restrictions, but a record is not a universal bar.
What should I search for when looking for second-chance jobs near me?
Combine your job title and location with “fair chance,” “second chance,” “fair chance employer” or “record-friendly.” Treat results as leads, then verify the posting’s duties, screening timing and mandatory requirements.
Can I get a federal job with a criminal record?
You can apply to most federal jobs, according to USAJOBS. Laws can bar particular offenses from particular positions, and agencies still review suitability, security and job-specific requirements. Read each announcement and answer questions accurately when asked.
Do I have to disclose an arrest on every application?
Not necessarily. Whether and when an employer may ask varies by federal, state and local rules and by the application. Follow the form’s instructions, do not volunteer a full history when it is not requested, and distinguish an arrest from a conviction.
What if a background-check report is wrong?
If a third-party report may be used against you, you should receive a copy and rights notice before a final adverse decision. Dispute the error with the reporting company, keep proof, and tell the employer promptly with supporting information.
