There is no single “unlock item” shared by open-world games. When a route is blocked, identify the type of obstacle, determine which capability would overcome it, then use the game’s map, mission log and environmental clues to locate that capability. After acquiring it, revisit marked doors, ledges, barriers and mechanisms—including places you already explored.
The exact item and location depend on the game, edition and story point. The reliable method is to treat every obstruction as a clue, record it, and connect it to the next traversal, breaking or interaction ability you obtain.

What counts as an item that unlocks an area?
Games use “item” broadly. The thing that opens a new route may be a physical object, a learned skill, a temporary power, a story-triggered upgrade or an interaction introduced by a mission. A key is only one example. In many exploration games, progress is gated by what your character can do rather than by a literal key in the inventory.

Sealed doors and locks
A door that remains closed may require a key, a switch elsewhere, a story event or a power that changes how you interact with it. Note its color, symbol, sound and surroundings. If the game records door types on the map, that label is often more useful than wandering through every building.
Breakable walls, blocks and barriers
A suspicious wall or block usually points to an ability that can remove or destroy an obstacle. Nintendo’s Metroid Dread guidance specifically describes destructible blocks and recommends looking for hints such as a glimpse of a passage or a suspicious sound. Treat the visual cue as a promise that the route may become usable later, not as evidence that the required power is nearby.
Gaps, high ledges and vertical routes
A jump that is consistently too short, a ledge that is just out of reach or a shaft that cannot be climbed indicates a traversal requirement. The needed upgrade might change horizontal movement, vertical reach or the ability to cross a particular surface. Mark the location and continue the story rather than repeatedly attempting an impossible jump.

Hazardous passages
Fire, corruption, extreme pressure or another environmental hazard can function as a gate even when the path is physically open. The relevant upgrade may provide protection or a way to bypass the hazard. Because games communicate hazards differently, rely on the game’s own icons, log entries and tutorial language rather than applying a rule from another title.
Interactive mechanisms
Some routes open only after you operate a device, align an object or activate a system. Nintendo notes that interacting with devices in Metroid Dread can create a new route. If a console, switch, sensor or unusual object is placed beside a dead end, inspect it before concluding that you need a combat upgrade.
Classify the obstacle before searching
Write down a short description when you first encounter a blockage. “Blue sealed door beside the elevator” is more useful than “stuck in the west room.” Include the region, nearby landmark, visible symbol and anything that happened when you interacted with it. Your note becomes a search filter when a new ability appears.
- Movement or traversal: a gap, ledge, climb, glide route or other terrain that cannot currently be crossed.
- Break or removal: a block, wall or barrier that visibly resists your current attacks.
- Interaction: a mechanism that responds only after you gain a matching action, tool or story permission.
- Hazard access: a route that is technically visible but unsafe or unavailable without protection or a bypass.
- Information gate: an area whose location or purpose is revealed only after observation, a mission clue or a map update.
This classification is a troubleshooting aid, not a universal system used by every developer. A game may combine several categories—for example, a device can require an interaction ability and then reveal a traversal route.
Match the gate to the capability you need
When you receive a new upgrade, compare its effect with the notes you made. Do not search every unexplored corner first. Ask what the ability visibly changes and which old obstacle has the same signature.

| What the gate looks like | Capability to test | First place to check |
|---|---|---|
| A gap or ledge that was narrowly out of reach | A movement or traversal upgrade | Marked ledges in the current region, then earlier regions |
| A wall or block with a crack, unusual texture or sound | An ability that breaks or removes obstacles | Locations where the same block type was recorded |
| A console, switch or device that did nothing | A new interaction or story permission | The device’s room and nearby branches |
| A route blocked by a danger | Protection, resistance or a bypass | Hazard boundaries shown on the map |
| An area absent from the map or only partly revealed | Observation, scouting or a map-discovery feature | Vantage points and unexplored map edges |
The table gives you a sequence for testing, not a promise that the game will place the reward beside the gate. Some designs intentionally send you to another region before the new ability becomes useful.
Use the map as a list of experiments
Open the map immediately after receiving a new ability. Look for icons, colors or filters that match the obstacle you recorded. If the game supports highlighting, select the relevant door, block or item category and inspect the entire map, not only the visible area.
Nintendo’s official Metroid Dread guidance recommends map highlighting to find doors, blocks and items that match a newly acquired ability. The highlighting can identify matching locations elsewhere as well as nearby, which makes it valuable for planned backtracking.
Check what the map does not show
A blank section is not proof that no gate exists. Some games reveal map information progressively, omit minor barriers or display only the region you have surveyed. In those cases, zoom out, switch floors or layers, and revisit the map after a story event updates it. If the map has no matching icon, rely on your written descriptions and environmental cues instead of assuming the upgrade is irrelevant.
Separate “blocked” from “undiscovered”
A blocked marker means the game has identified a route you cannot currently use. An undiscovered area may simply require you to walk closer, climb to a vantage point or activate an observation feature. Confusing the two leads to unnecessary backtracking. Record whether you actually saw a barrier or only inferred that a region might exist beyond the fog.
Read the mission log and tutorial messages again
New abilities are often accompanied by a short explanation that disappears after you close it. Reopen the mission log, tutorial archive or help screen and look for verbs describing what changed: break, pull, cross, climb, scan, reveal or activate. The wording may point to a gate type even when the map does not.
The Nintendo guide for Metroid Dread directs stuck players to the mission log, tutorial messages and map-navigation tools. Apply the same habit in other games, while recognizing that menu names and the amount of retained tutorial text vary by title.
Check the most recent story objective as well. A newly acquired ability can be optional until a later mission, while the current objective may lead to the region where the ability is expected to matter. Following the active objective for one step can reveal whether you are missing a required upgrade or simply exploring out of sequence.

Look for environmental hints instead of brute-forcing every wall
Games frequently telegraph a future route. A narrow view through a broken surface, a sound from behind a barrier, an enemy positioned near a device or an unusually clear line toward a ledge can all indicate intended interaction. In Metroid Dread, Nintendo specifically cites glimpses of passageways and suspicious sounds as hints for hidden breakable blocks.
These signals are game-specific. One title may use audio, another may use lighting, and another may rely almost entirely on map markers. Observe what the game has already taught you: if every earlier breakable wall had a crack, search for that texture; if mechanisms glow when usable, look for the same visual language.
Avoid repeated attacks on an unconfirmed gate
Test an obstacle once or twice to establish that your current capability cannot affect it. Then record it and move on. Repeating the same attack without a new clue wastes time and can obscure the intended route. Return only after an upgrade, map change or story event gives you a reason to try again.

Backtrack deliberately after gaining an ability
Backtracking is not a failure state. It is a core part of ability-gated exploration. Nintendo explicitly advises Metroid Dread players to try previously visited areas when they cannot find a place to use a new ability.
- Start with recorded gates. Visit the closest locations that match the upgrade’s effect.
- Expand by region. If nothing responds, check other areas connected by elevators, fast travel or major corridors.
- Use the shortest route first. This confirms whether the ability works and prevents a long detour based on a false match.
- Mark unresolved locations. Keep a separate list for gates that still do not respond; they may require a different ability or a later story event.
Backtracking does not mean visiting every room. It means revisiting places with a documented reason. A map marker, a matching block type or a remembered ledge is a stronger reason than a vague feeling that you missed something.
How different games signal the next area
Open-world and interconnected-area games do not share one exploration language. Compare them by the signal they provide, the capability they require and the direction in which they expect you to search.
| Game example | How the gate is signaled | What to do when stuck | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Metroid Dread | Map icons and highlighting, tutorial messages, mission-log context and environmental hints | Highlight matching doors, blocks or items, then revisit earlier areas | It is a 2D action-adventure with interconnected areas, so use it as an example of ability-based backtracking rather than a definition of every open world |
| Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown | Blocked paths and optional Guided Mode assistance | Use Guided Mode if needed and identify which skill or ability is missing | Its Time Powers and guidance options are specific to that game |
| Assassin’s Creed Shadows | Progressively revealed map information, observation and Pathfinder-style exploration support | Observe the surroundings and follow the information the map reveals | Map and observation behavior should not be assumed in another title |
| The Pathless | Spirit vision and vantage points support organic discovery | Gain a higher view, activate the game’s vision feature and learn the space as you move through it | Developer commentary describes this design choice; it is not a universal open-world rule |
The comparison shows why a walkthrough written for one game can mislead you in another. A title that expects observation may not mark every gate, while a title with robust icon filters may make backtracking explicit.
Case study: applying the loop in an interconnected world
Imagine that you acquire a new ability in Metroid Dread but do not know where it applies. First, identify the ability’s practical effect from the tutorial message. Next, open the map and highlight the matching door, block or item category. The highlighted results give you a set of candidate locations, including areas you have already visited.

Travel to the nearest candidate and test the ability once. If the obstacle responds, continue through the newly opened route and update your map notes. If it does not, verify that you selected the correct icon category and that the obstacle is the same type shown in the tutorial. Then try the next candidate rather than repeatedly attacking the first one.
If no candidate appears, review the mission log and recent tutorial messages. Nintendo’s guidance also recommends examining environmental hints and trying a previously visited area. A suspicious sound or visible passage can identify a hidden block that is not obvious from the map alone.
This example demonstrates the method without claiming that every open-world game offers identical highlighting or map labels.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →What to do when every path seems to be a dead end
Nintendo frames this common problem as: “I’m stuck, because every path seems to be a dead end. How do I move forward?” Work through the following branches in order.
If one route is visibly blocked
Record the gate and search the current map for the same icon or obstacle type. Check the mission log for a recently mentioned capability. If there is no match, continue the main objective until the game introduces another ability or region.
If the map shows no obvious route
Determine whether the map is incomplete rather than blocked. Look for a nearby elevator, floor layer, unexplored edge or vantage point that could reveal more information. Games with progressive map discovery may expect you to observe before they display a path.
If you have an ability but nothing reacts
Confirm the ability’s exact action and timing. Some gates require a particular button, direction or proximity instead of a passive upgrade. Test a second obstacle of the same apparent type to distinguish a control mistake from a wrong match.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf you are circling familiar rooms
Stop searching randomly and compare your notes with the map. Choose one unresolved gate, plan the shortest route to it and test it. If it fails, cross it off temporarily and move to the next candidate. This creates evidence instead of a loop.

If the game offers an assistance mode
Use it as a diagnostic tool rather than a last resort. In Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown, Ubisoft describes Guided Mode as a way to show blocked paths. Turning on a built-in aid can confirm whether the issue is route recognition, missing information or a genuinely unavailable ability.
Build a fast revisit route
Once you have several blocked locations, order them so that one trip answers multiple questions. Group notes by region, travel connection and gate type. Visit the nearest matching gate first, then continue along the same route to the next one. Mark each result immediately.
- Confirmed: the new ability opens the route.
- Not this ability: the obstacle remains unchanged after a correct test.
- Not yet available: the location is inaccessible because the region itself requires another condition.
- Unclear: the map or environment does not provide enough information to test it reliably.
Keep “not this ability” separate from “not yet available.” The first prevents you from repeating a failed match; the second reminds you that the location may still matter later.

When you need game-specific help
A broad method can identify the kind of gate, but it cannot name an exact item without the game title and context. Before looking for a walkthrough, record the game, platform or edition, current mission, region name, abilities already acquired and the precise obstacle description. Updates can change labels, routes or map behavior, so include the version when a guide asks for it.
Use official support pages, in-game help and developer-authored maps first. Search for the obstacle’s wording plus the game name—for example, “sealed door after acquiring [ability name]”—rather than searching for a generic phrase such as “item that unlocks areas.” A precise description filters out guides for unrelated games that use similar terminology.
If a guide names an item that your version does not contain, check whether it refers to downloadable content, a different platform edition or a later story chapter. The absence of a universal item is why the game and progression point are essential details.
A compact checklist for your next blocked route
- Describe the obstacle in concrete terms: door, block, gap, hazard or device.
- Record its region, landmark, symbol and any sound or visual hint.
- Read the latest mission-log and tutorial entries.
- Open the map, zoom out and inspect filters, layers and highlighted matches.
- Compare the gate with the practical effect of your newest ability.
- Test the closest matching location once.
- Backtrack to earlier areas if the current region has no match.
- Use observation, vantage points or a built-in guidance mode when that game provides them.
- Mark each result so you do not repeat failed tests.
- For an exact item location, gather the game title, edition, platform, mission and region before consulting a walkthrough.
The key is to turn a blocked route into a documented hypothesis. Maps, logs, environmental details and purposeful backtracking then tell you where to test, while the game-specific instructions determine which item or ability ultimately opens the way.
