To get one, search the Steam Store for the game and “demo,” open the game’s store page, and select its demo offer. Install with the page’s install or play control, monitor the queue in Download Manager, and remove it from Library with Manage > Uninstall.
If a demo seems to disappear, check the signed-in account, Library filters, View > Hidden Games, and the Steam library folder where it was installed. The steps below cover the normal workflow and the fixes for missing, uninstalled, or failed downloads.

What a Steam demo is and where it appears
A demo is a limited, separately listed build that a publisher makes available through Steam. It can have its own store entry, download, executable, saves, and update schedule. Availability, supported operating systems, size, controller behavior, and whether progress transfers to a full release are decided by the publisher and can change when the listing is updated.

- Steam Store: where you discover the demo and start its installation.
- Steam Library: where the installed demo is launched, moved, hidden, or uninstalled.
A demo may be free, time-limited, permanently available, or removed by its publisher. If the game has no current demo offer on its store page, Steam cannot install it through the normal process.

How to find a demo on Steam
Search the Store by game title and “demo”
- Open the Steam client or the Steam Store in a browser.
- Search for the exact game title followed by the word demo. For example, search for
Example Game demorather than only the publisher’s name. - Open the result that matches the game you want. Check the title, publisher, screenshots, and supported platform so you do not install a similarly named product.
Search results can include the full game, downloadable content, soundtracks, playtest branches, and unrelated titles. The game’s own store page is the authoritative place to confirm that a demo is currently offered.
Use the offer on the game’s store page
On a page that has a demo, look for a distinct demo offer and an Install Demo, Download Demo, Play Demo, or similarly labeled control. The wording can differ by client version and by whether the demo is already in your account. Select that control instead of the full-game purchase button.
Read the page’s system requirements and download information before starting. The displayed disk-space figure is the publisher’s current requirement for that build; it is not a universal size for all demos.
Find a demo that was already added to your account
If you previously installed or claimed a demo, open Library and search by the game title. Then check the following before assuming it was deleted:
- Clear a search term that excludes the title.
- Review the Library filters and make sure you are not showing only installed games, only a particular platform, or only a collection.
- Open View > Hidden Games. If the demo is listed there, select it, choose Manage, and then choose Remove from Hidden.
- Confirm that you are signed in to the Steam account that originally added the demo. Steam identifies a wrong account and an incorrect filter as common explanations for missing games.
After removing a title from Hidden Games, return to the normal Library view and search again. A title that is not installed can still be visible if the Library filter allows uninstalled items.
How to install a Steam demo
Start the installation from the Store
- Open the demo’s store page.
- Select the demo’s install or play control.
- When Steam asks where to install it, choose an existing Steam Library location. If you have more than one drive, select the library with enough free space.
- Accept the installation prompt. Steam adds the demo to the download queue and creates the local files in the selected library.
- Open the client’s Download Manager to watch progress, pause or resume the transfer, change queue order, and see whether Steam is downloading, installing, or updating the demo.
- When the process finishes, open Library, select the demo, and choose Play.
Steam describes Download Manager as the place where downloads and updates are managed. If the demo appears to be waiting indefinitely, inspect its position in the queue rather than starting another copy from the store page.

Choose the right library and drive
A Steam Library is a folder that Steam indexes for installed content. It can be on the system drive or on another internal or external drive. Before confirming an install, check the free space on the destination and whether that drive is connected and mounted. A disconnected drive can make an installed demo appear unavailable later.

Steam then offers that location in future installation dialogs. Keep the folder on a drive that your computer can access whenever you want to launch the demo.
Track a queued or paused demo
In Download Manager, check the demo’s state and queue position. A paused item can be resumed there; a queued item may wait for another download to finish. The manager also shows update activity, so a demo that was installed previously may be using the queue for an update rather than a first download.
Do not close the client while assuming a remote download will continue unless Steam is configured for that use. For a normal local installation, leave Steam open until the download and disk installation report completion.
Move a demo to another Steam Library
If the original drive is full, you can move an installed demo instead of downloading it again, provided the destination library exists.
- Open Library and locate the demo.
- Right-click the demo and choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Choose Move Install Folder.
- Select the destination Steam Library and confirm the move.
Steam transfers the local installation to the selected library. Keep both drives available until the operation finishes. If the destination is not offered, add it first through Steam’s storage manager.

Launch and manage a demo after installation
Launch from Library
When the demo finishes installing, open Library, select its entry, and click Play. The first launch may create a desktop shortcut, install a publisher-provided prerequisite, or display a configuration window. Those behaviors belong to the particular demo and are not consistent across all titles.
Understand saves and progress transfer
Do not assume that a demo uses the same save files as the full game or that progress automatically carries forward. Before investing time, check the demo’s current store description for a statement about save-data behavior or progress transfer. This is a publisher- and version-dependent feature, not a Steam-wide guarantee.
Manage updates
Steam can place demo updates in Download Manager along with other downloads. If an update is pending, use the manager to inspect its queue position and controls. A title that launches successfully one day may require an update before it starts again, particularly when the publisher changes the demo build.

- Open Library in the Steam client.
- Find the demo. Use the Library search and filters if necessary.
- Right-click the demo’s entry.
- Choose Manage.
- Select Uninstall and confirm.
This removes the demo’s local files from the selected Steam Library. If you later want to try it again and the publisher still offers it, return to its store page and install it again.
Do not confuse a demo uninstall with removing Steam
Uninstalling the demo through its Library menu affects that demo. Removing the Steam application itself is a different operation. Steam warns that uninstalling Steam can delete installed game content unless the steamapps folder is moved or backed up first. If your goal is only to reclaim space used by one demo, use the demo’s Manage > Uninstall command rather than removing Steam.
Fix a demo that is missing from Library
Check the account first
Verify the account avatar or account name in the Steam client. A demo added on one account will not necessarily appear when another account is signed in on the same computer. Sign out and back in to the account that originally obtained the demo if you are uncertain.

Clear filters and search settings
Open Library and remove filters that limit the view to installed items, a collection, a category, or a particular operating system. Search for the title without additional terms. A demo that is not installed can be hidden by an “installed only” view even though it remains associated with the account.

Remove it from Hidden Games
- In the Steam client, open View > Hidden Games.
- Select the missing demo.
- Choose Manage.
- Choose Remove from Hidden.
- Return to Library and search for the title again.
Hidden status is separate from installation status. Removing a title from the hidden list does not download it; it only makes the Library entry visible again.
Confirm that the publisher still lists the demo
Open the game’s store page. If the demo offer has been withdrawn or replaced, it may no longer be available for a new installation even if you remember seeing it previously. The current store listing is the useful check because demo availability can change.
Fix “demo is uninstalled” or a missing library folder
Check the drive and library path
If Steam says a demo is uninstalled even though you used it before, confirm that the drive containing the Steam Library is connected and visible to the operating system. This commonly happens with an external drive, a drive letter that changed, or a library folder that was moved outside Steam.
Add the existing library in Storage Manager
- Open Steam’s storage manager.
- Use the + button to add an existing Steam Library folder on the affected drive.
- Select the folder that contains the library’s
steamappsdirectory. - Let Steam rescan the location.
Steam’s storage manager can add an alternate library folder; once the correct location is registered, existing games and demos in that folder should appear. Do not create a new empty library at a different path if the old files are still present—you want to add the folder that already contains them.
Check access and connection problems
- Reconnect an external drive before starting Steam.
- Make sure the drive is not mounted read-only and that your user account can read and write to the library folder.
- Do not disconnect the drive while Steam is downloading, moving, or verifying files.
- If the folder was renamed, add the renamed folder through Storage Manager instead of guessing the previous path.
Fix a demo that will not download or install
Restart Steam and the computer
Exit Steam completely, start it again, and retry the download. If the problem persists, restart the computer. This clears temporary client and operating-system conditions without changing the demo’s store availability.
Clear Steam’s download cache
Use Steam’s Settings area and the Downloads page to clear the download cache, then sign in again if Steam requests it. Clearing the cache flushes locally cached configuration data so the client can acquire it from Steam’s servers again. You may need to restart the download after the cache is cleared.
Repair the Steam Library folder
In Steam’s storage controls, select the affected library and use its repair option when available. Repairing addresses library-folder permissions and directory problems that can prevent Steam from writing or validating files. It does not create free disk space; check the drive separately if the error mentions capacity.
Verify local files when the option is available
- Open Library and right-click the demo.
- Choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Choose the available file-verification command.
Steam compares the local installation with the files expected for that build and redownloads files it identifies as missing or damaged. The command may not be available for every demo or every client state.

Try another Download Region
Open Steam Settings, go to Downloads, and select a different Download Region. Retry the installation after the change. This can help when a regional content server is congested or temporarily failing. Restore your usual region later if the alternate region does not improve the transfer.
Check software that can interfere
Firewall, antivirus, endpoint-security, VPN, disk-monitoring, and aggressive cleanup software can block Steam’s network or disk operations. Review their recent alerts and allow Steam through the relevant controls. Do not disable security permanently; if you test with a protection feature paused, turn it back on immediately after the test.
Separate network errors from disk errors
- Network symptoms: the download repeatedly pauses, the speed drops to zero, or Steam reports a connection or content-server error. Try a different Download Region and check the network connection.
- Disk symptoms: Steam reports write, corrupt-disk, permissions, or insufficient-space errors. Check free space, the drive connection, folder permissions, and library repair.
- Queue symptoms: the demo remains scheduled behind another item. Open Download Manager and reorder or pause other downloads.
Start a demo download remotely
Steam’s Remote Downloads feature can start a download from the web Games list or the Steam Mobile app. For this to work, the Steam client must be left running and signed in on the home PC or Mac. The computer must also be online and have the target library available.
- Leave Steam running and signed in on the home computer.
- Open the Steam web Games list or Steam Mobile app while signed in to the same account.
- Locate the demo and start its download remotely.
- Check the local Steam client later to confirm that the queue completed and that the demo was installed to the intended library.
Steam recommends using Remote Downloads only with a private, secured computer. Do not leave a shared or publicly accessible machine signed in for this purpose.
How to compare two Steam demos before installing
Two demos for similar games can differ substantially. Use the current store listing for each title and compare the following items rather than assuming that one demo’s behavior applies to another.

Record these details from the live listing on the day you install. Store pages can change as a publisher updates, replaces, or removes a demo.
