Use cy.contains() when the visible text is the behavior you want to test, and .find() when the search should be limited to descendants of an element you already selected.
Choose the locator that matches what the test should protect
A good locator expresses why the element matters to the test. Cypress recommends using dedicated data attributes to keep selectors independent of styling and JavaScript changes. Its best-practices guide says: “Best Practice: Use data-* attributes to provide context to your selectors and isolate them from CSS or JS changes.” Cypress best practices discusses the trade-offs among data attributes, text, and other locator styles.
| Locator style | Use it when | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
cy.get('[data-cy="submit"]') |
The element needs a stable identity even if its styling or label changes. | You need to add and maintain test attributes in your markup. |
cy.contains('Submit') |
The visible wording is part of the behavior the test should verify. | Copy or localization changes affect the match; Cypress may yield an interactive ancestor rather than the deepest text element. |
| CSS structure or semantic attributes | The structure or attribute is meaningful to the test and stable enough to rely on. | Broad tags and styling classes can be fragile or ambiguous. Prefer a selector that uniquely identifies the intended element. |
Testing Library queries such as findByRole |
You want role- or label-oriented queries in a Cypress test. | These require the Cypress Testing Library package. A locator alone is not a complete accessibility audit. |
A useful decision is: should the test fail if the text changes? If yes, a text locator may be appropriate; if the element should still be found after copy changes, use a stable test attribute. Neither selector style, by itself, proves that an application is accessible.
Find an element from Cypress’s current root with cy.get()
cy.get(selector) queries matching elements from Cypress’s current root. Outside a .within() callback, that normally means the document. For example, add an attribute to the application markup and query it directly:

// Application markup: <button data-cy="submit">Submit</button>
cy.get('[data-cy="submit"]').click()
cy.get() retries while waiting for the matching element and for chained assertions to pass, subject to the applicable command timeout. Cypress queries are queued and retried; they are not synchronous calls that immediately return a jQuery element. See the Cypress cy.get() documentation.
Prefer precise selectors over catch-all queries such as *, div, or section. Such selectors can match many nodes and create unnecessary work for the browser’s query engine and Cypress element processing, as Cypress explains in its test-performance guidance.
Use cy.contains() when visible text matters
cy.contains(text) finds an element containing the specified text and yields at most one element. This makes it useful when the displayed label itself is under test:

cy.contains('Submit').click()
Text matching is case-sensitive by default. To ignore case, pass { matchCase: false }. You can also pass a selector to constrain the candidate elements, or provide a number or regular expression as the text argument. Cypress may prefer an interactive element such as a button, link, label, or submit input over a deeper nested match. If you need to verify that several elements match, use a query that yields a collection rather than relying on cy.contains(). See Cypress cy.contains().
// Limit the text search to buttons; ignore capitalization.
cy.contains('button', 'submit', { matchCase: false }).click()
Consider localization when choosing text selectors. If a test should track the label shown in a particular language, a text locator can make that intent explicit. If the same control should be found regardless of language, a dedicated test attribute may be more suitable.
Scope queries with .find() or .within()
Use .find(selector) for one query among the descendants of the current subject. It searches below that subject, not the subject itself:

cy.get('[data-cy="checkout"]')
.find('[data-cy="confirm"]')
.click()
By default, .find() can match descendants at any depth. To select only direct children, use a leading child combinator:
cy.get('[data-cy="list"]').find('> li')
When several commands should operate within the same region, use .within() to scope them together:
cy.get('[data-cy="login-form"]').within(() => {
cy.get('[data-cy="email"]').type('[email protected]')
cy.get('[data-cy="submit"]').click()
})
Inside the callback, the queries use the selected region as their scope instead of starting from the document. See the .find() documentation and .within() documentation.

Account for iframes and shadow DOM
Iframes
cy.get() does not cross into an <iframe>; it searches the application-under-test document. A selector that appears correct in the iframe’s markup will not make the query cross that document boundary. Cypress’s cy.get() reference describes this limitation.
Shadow DOM
By default, .find() stops at shadow boundaries. You can enable shadow-DOM inclusion for a query with includeShadowDom: true, or use .shadow() to enter a shadow root and query inside it:
// Include shadow DOM in this find query.
cy.get('[data-cy="widget"]').find('[data-cy="status"]', {
includeShadowDom: true
})
// Or enter the shadow root, then query within it.
cy.get('my-widget').shadow().find('[data-cy="status"]')
The option can also be set in Cypress configuration. Check the .find() documentation for its query behavior.

Diagnose a locator that times out
Cypress retries queries and chained assertions until they pass or the command times out. When an element is not found, check the selector and the page state before raising the timeout:
- Confirm the rendered markup. Check that the attribute, text, or structure in the selector exists on the element you intend to find.
- Check uniqueness and scope. Make the selector more precise, confirm that
cy.get()starts from the expected root, and verify that a.find()parent contains the target. - Check application state. The page may not yet be showing the expected view. Cypress retries the query, but the test still needs to put the application into the correct state.
- Adjust the timeout only when justified. If the application genuinely needs more time to render, use the default command timeout or a command-level timeout appropriate to that case. Increasing it does not fix a selector that never matches.
For example, a command-level timeout can give a known slow-loading element more time:
cy.get('[data-cy="report"]', { timeout: 10000 })
Use a longer wait only when the application’s actual behavior warrants it; otherwise it can mask a wrong selector or missing state transition. Cypress documents query retries in its cy.get() and .find() references.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does cy.contains() return every element with matching text?
No. It yields at most one element; use a collection query when you need to check multiple matches.
Can cy.get() locate an element inside an iframe?
No. It does not cross iframe boundaries.
Which Cypress query should I use if I want text changes to fail the test?
Use cy.contains() when the visible text is itself part of the behavior under test.
