To find worthwhile unfamiliar games during a Steam sale, use Steam’s recommendations to generate leads, search by the kinds of experiences you enjoy, check both overall and recent reviews, and try a demo when one is available. Wishlist promising candidates and compare them by personal fit, evidence, and price—not by discount size or popularity alone. “Hidden gem” is a useful description for an overlooked candidate, not a formal Steam category.
1. Start with personalized recommendations
Browse Steam’s personalized home page and Discovery Queue for games related to what you play, alongside new and popular releases. Steam’s Discovery Update described the queue as a daily refreshed mix of new, top-selling, and similar-to-what-you-play products. Treat those results as leads rather than a finished shortlist: recommendations reflect signals about your account, not a guarantee that you will enjoy a game.

Curator recommendations can provide another source of candidates. As you browse, wishlist titles you may want to revisit, follow games whose updates interest you, or mark unsuitable recommendations as ignored. 2. Search for the experience you want
Move beyond searches for familiar franchises. Try a genre, but also consider a specific mechanic, setting, mood, or style of play—such as turn-based tactics, quiet exploration, or co-op survival. Choose a few relevant filters to reduce unrelated results, then inspect candidates individually. A tag tells you how a product is categorized; it does not establish quality or tell you whether the game’s execution will suit you. Broader searches may surface more possibilities, while narrower themes can make a manageable shortlist.
3. Use reviews as a screen, then look at recent opinions
Start with the overall user-review summary as a quick way to screen a result. For games that still interest you, read recent reviews and look for repeated, specific comments about the parts of play that matter to you: pacing, difficulty, controls, performance, or story. A percentage or positive label compresses many customers’ opinions; it cannot tell you whether their preferences match yours.

Steam’s 2016 Discovery Update 2.0 described a snapshot of reviews from the most recent 30 days alongside access to recent customer opinions, as a way to indicate a game’s current state. 4. Try a demo if the game offers one
Browse Steam’s demos and narrow results with relevant tags, features, or operating-system filters. A demo can help answer questions that reviews cannot: whether the controls feel comfortable, the pace works for you, or the central mechanic is enjoyable. 5. Save candidates instead of buying under pressure
Add plausible finds to your wishlist and return to them when you are ready to decide. Steam’s Discovery Update says its default is to email users when one or more wishlisted items go on sale or are released. Notifications are a tracking aid, not a reason to buy: check the current account settings and the game’s store page for the details that apply to you. Steam Discovery Update 2.0

- Fit: Does its theme, genre, or mechanic match what you want to play?
- Reviews: Do overall and recent customer opinions suggest strengths or recurring drawbacks relevant to you?
- Hands-on evidence: Is a demo available, and did you enjoy playing it?
- Price: Is the sale price acceptable to you, even if the discount is less dramatic than another game’s?
Steam’s discovery, search, review, demo, and wishlist tools help you gather evidence; none can decide personal fit for you. Store layouts, sale prices, review presentation, and demo availability can change, so use the current game page when making a purchase decision.
