Then use a store’s similarity listings and tags, add personalized recommendations, and check trusted human recommendations. Treat every result as a lead: the shared feature matters more than a broad label like “RPG.”
What should I play if I like a particular game?
Start by writing down one or two specific qualities that made the favorite work for you. “I like RPGs” can point to thousands of different experiences; “party-based combat and companion stories” is a more useful search. Your target might be a mechanic, genre, mood, setting, pace, session length, or social format.

This distinction matters because “similar” does not mean one thing. Two games can share a genre but feel very different, while games in different genres can share the exploration or cooperative play you want.
How to find games similar to your favorites
1. Start with the favorite’s store page
Look for a “More Like This” section or the storefront’s equivalent. On Steam, the top 20 tags on a game are used to determine which games appear as similar on its store page, according to Steam’s tag documentation. Treat that shelf as a starting point, not a ranking of quality or a guarantee that the games share the feature you care about.

2. Search for specific tags
Choose tags that describe the appeal you identified—perhaps “Tactical,” “Exploration,” or “Co-op”—rather than relying only on a broad genre. Steam supports browsing by tags and searching by name, tag, or description. Its documented filters include Steam features, operating system, and language; the available filters differ on other storefronts. See the Steam Discovery Update.
Tags can be applied by developers, players with non-limited accounts, and moderators. Steam says tag overlap contributes to recommendations and “More Like This” similarity, but tags are descriptions to interpret, not ground truth. Less common tags may distinguish a game more usefully than very common ones. Steam’s tag documentation explains how they are used.

3. Try personalized recommendations
Steam’s Interactive Recommender takes a different route: it uses playtime histories to find games played by people with broadly similar habits, rather than directly relying on tags or reviews. Valve described the idea this way in its 11 July 2019 announcement: “The idea is that if players with broadly similar play habits to you also tend to play another game you haven’t tried yet, then that game is likely to be a good recommendation for you.” Read the Valve announcement introducing the Interactive Recommender.
The interface announcement described controls for shifting between popular and niche results, recent and classic games, and tag filters. Controls and availability can change, so check the live Steam storefront. A play-history model also has a cold-start limitation: Valve says the tool cannot recommend new releases that nobody has played. For those, use new-release discovery and human coverage as well.

The two Steam approaches answer different questions: tags surface description overlap, while the Interactive Recommender looks for patterns in what similar players have played. Valve presents the Recommender as one discovery feature alongside the Discovery Queue and other methods, not as a replacement. See the 2020 announcement on its release to all users.
4. Ask people whose taste you trust
Friends, specialist reviewers, communities, and followed curators can suggest candidates that automated lists miss. On Steam, followed curators’ recommendations can appear on the home page and on genre and tag pages. Look at both their selections and their explanations: a curator is more useful when you can tell whether their reasons match your interests. Steam offers guidance on Steam Curators.

5. Check each candidate against your reason for searching
Before adding a game to your shortlist, ask what supports the match and whether it actually fits your constraints. Store tags, a recommender’s play-pattern match, and a curator’s explanation are different kinds of evidence. Check the candidate’s description, screenshots, and available gameplay footage against the quality you want to repeat.

- Appeal: Does it share the mechanic, mood, pace, setting, or social experience you named?
- Platform and features: Is it available on your platform, and does it support the features you need, such as co-op or controller input?
- Discovery signal: Is the match based on tags, similar players’ histories, or a human recommendation?
- Range: If a recommender provides the controls, do you want popular or niche games, recent or classic ones?
- Specificity: Do the tags or the human explanation identify a real reason the game might suit you?
What to do when the first results are poor
- Change the seed game. If your favorite blends several genres or has unusual mechanics, start from another game that shares the one feature you want to repeat.
- Narrow the search. Replace a broad tag with a more specific mechanic, mood, or play format.
- Switch discovery methods. If personalized results feel too mainstream, adjust toward niche where possible. If tags are too literal, try a curator or play-pattern recommendation.
- Handle new releases separately. A model based on play histories may lack data for games nobody has played, so check new-release discovery and informed human recommendations.
