How to find games made without generative AI

The most reliable way to find games made without generative AI is to combine a platform’s disclosure with a dated statement from the developer. Steam can reveal certain AI-assisted content shipped in a game, itch.io’s No AI tag can surface creator-claimed projects, and curator lists can provide leads. None of these is a universal, independently audited certificate that every tool used during development was non-generative, so you must check what each claim actually covers.

First define what “without generative AI” means to you

People use “AI-free” to mean different things. A game can contain no AI-generated artwork while its team used an assistant for code, brainstorming, translation, testing or marketing. Another game can contain a live text generator that creates dialogue during play but have no pre-generated images. Treat these as separate questions instead of forcing a yes-or-no label onto every title.

Standard What you are checking Evidence that would answer it
No generative content shipped to players Whether the released game contains AI-assisted art, sound, writing, localization or other player-facing material A platform disclosure and a developer statement covering shipped content
No live generative feature Whether the running game calls an AI system to create dialogue, images, quests or other content in real time The platform’s live-generation disclosure, technical description or a developer explanation
No generative tools anywhere in production Whether the team used such tools for code, drafts, research, testing, localization, editing or other development work A specific developer policy or statement that defines “use” broadly enough to include those stages
No AI-generated promotion Whether trailers, store art, screenshots or social posts were generated or altered with such tools A marketing statement; ordinary game-content disclosures may not cover this

Choose your standard before searching. If your concern is what you will experience or support in the finished game, the first two standards may be enough. If you want a game made without generative tools at any stage, you need a much broader statement than a storefront content disclosure usually provides.

Three practical ways to discover candidates

1. Use Steam’s generative-AI disclosure on the store page

Open a title’s Steam store page and look for its generative-AI disclosure details. Valve’s Content Survey focuses on AI-assisted content that ships with the game and is consumed by players. The documentation gives examples such as artwork, sound, narrative and localization, and separates pre-generated material from content created while the game is running.

Read the details rather than treating the presence of a disclosure as an automatic rejection. A disclosure can tell you that a particular asset category was assisted, while your own boundary may allow editing assistance but exclude generated voices. Conversely, a page that does not show a disclosure does not establish that no generative tool was used. The section has a bounded purpose; it is not a complete production-history audit.

Steam explicitly states, “Efficiency gains through the use of these tools is not the focus of this section.” That sentence matters: the platform’s disclosure is aimed at certain player-facing content, not every way a studio might have used software to work faster.

2. Browse itch.io’s No AI and videogame tags

itch.io provides a browse route for projects carrying the No AI tag alongside the videogame tag. The page describes projects that advertise not using generative AI in their creative process. This makes the tag useful for finding candidates, especially from small teams that may not have a formal platform disclosure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Open each project page and read the description, development log and developer posts. Look for a definition of “no AI”: some creators may be talking about the game’s artwork and writing, while others may mean no generative tool at any point. itch.io’s creator guidance asks for accurate, relevant tags and asks creators to clearly state when projects involve automatic or AI generation. The tag is still supplied by the creator, so it is a discovery signal rather than an independent inspection mark.

3. Follow curator lists, then inspect their evidence

Steam curator pages such as “Is This AI?” can surface titles and explain why a curator considers them free of generative AI. Visible entries may include review dates and links or references to developer explanations. These pages are efficient for building a shortlist when you do not know where to start.

A curator is making a community assessment, not issuing a platform certificate. Open the cited developer statement, store-page disclosure or official post yourself. If an entry has no source, an old review date or only a visual guess based on an asset’s style, treat it as a lead and not as proof.

  1. Record the exact title and edition. Note the platform, access date and whether you are looking at an early-access build, a demo or the current release. A later update can add content that was not present when an older statement was written.
  2. Read the platform information panel. On Steam, locate the generative-AI disclosure and copy its wording into your notes. Identify whether it describes pre-generated content, live-generated content, or both, and which categories are named.
  3. Find the creator’s own statement. Check the store description, FAQ, developer blog, dated update, official website or verified social account. Prefer wording that says what was and was not used over a slogan such as “made by humans.”
  4. Mark the scope of the claim. Does “no AI” refer to shipped assets, the creative process, the entire production pipeline, marketing material, or only a particular version? Write down exclusions such as “no generated art, but machine translation was used.”
  5. Check the date. A statement from before launch may not cover a later expansion, patch, downloadable content or new language. Look for the newest statement that addresses the version you plan to play.
  6. Compare the claim with your personal standard. A game can satisfy “no generated content in the release” while failing “no generative tools at any stage.” Decide using the standard you selected, not a label with an undefined scope.
  7. Classify uncertainty honestly. If the page has no disclosure and you cannot find a creator statement, record the result as “unknown.” Do not convert silence into an “AI-free” verdict.

How to read Steam’s disclosure without over-interpreting it

Pre-generated content

Pre-generated content is produced with an AI tool before release and then shipped for players to consume. In practice, this can include an image in the game, a sound effect, written dialogue or localization. The disclosure tells you about the shipped material described by the developer, not necessarily about discarded drafts or internal experiments.

Live-generated content

Live-generated content is created with an AI tool while the game is running. A title might disclose a system that creates dialogue or images in response to player input. This is a different technical and player-experience issue from using a generated texture once during development, so check which category is selected.

What the panel does not promise

The disclosure does not certify that a team avoided every generative tool during development. Steam’s documentation narrows this section to content that ships and is consumed by players, and says efficiency gains are outside its focus. Code assistance, private brainstorming, internal prototypes and other workflow uses may therefore fall outside the information you see on the store page.

How to evaluate an itch.io “No AI” claim

Start with the tag page to discover projects, then move to the project’s own words. A strong statement defines the boundary: for example, whether it covers art, music, writing, code, translation, voice, trailers and promotional images. A weaker statement only repeats the tag or says that the project is “human-made” without explaining what that excludes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Check the project description for a definition of the claim.
  • Read development logs for later changes or corrections.
  • Look for a date and a version or release milestone.
  • See whether the creator distinguishes non-generative software from systems that automatically generate content.
  • Use the creator’s statement as evidence about that project, not as a guarantee about every title carrying the tag.

If a project page says nothing beyond the tag, keep it on a “candidate” list until you can obtain a clearer statement. The absence of an explanation is not evidence that the creator is being deceptive; it simply leaves the scope unresolved.

How to use curator lists responsibly

Curators are valuable for discovery because they collect scattered statements in one place. Their entries can also preserve a link to an explanation that is difficult to find through a store search. Use the review date to decide whether you need to look for a newer release or developer post.

Separate three things when reading an entry:

  • Observation: what the curator saw on a store page or in the game.
  • Attribution: what the developer or publisher said.
  • Conclusion: the curator’s judgment about whether the title fits its list.

Only the second category is a primary statement, and even it may have a limited scope. If a curator infers AI use solely from an image’s appearance, do not treat that inference as established. When the decision matters, open the original statement and apply your own definition.

Build an evidence record instead of relying on a badge

A small record prevents contradictory labels from becoming confusing. For each game, save the title, platform, version, access date, disclosure wording, developer statement, statement date and your conclusion. The following framework keeps discovery and verification separate.

No AI discovery tag Project creator Whatever “no AI” means in that creator’s description of the creative process Use to find candidates, then read the project’s explanation and dates
Curator entry Community curator The curator’s assessment, sometimes with a cited statement or disclosure Use as a lead; verify the cited primary evidence
Developer FAQ or update Developer or publisher Potentially broad, but only as broad as the words and exclusions specify Prefer dated, title-specific language that covers the version you will play

Questions to ask when a statement is vague

If a developer says “we did not use AI,” the useful follow-up is not an accusation but a request for scope. Ask which of these the statement covers:

  • Artwork, concept art, textures, animation and 3D assets
  • Music, sound effects and voice recordings
  • Dialogue, narrative, item descriptions and localization
  • Code, scripts, debugging and automated testing
  • Reference images, brainstorming and internal prototypes
  • Trailers, screenshots, store art and other marketing material
  • Future patches, downloadable content and newly added languages

A public answer does not need to disclose confidential tooling or every employee’s workflow. It does need to make clear whether “no AI” refers to the shipped game, the creative process or the entire production pipeline. If the developer answers only one of these questions, record only that narrower conclusion.

What to do when evidence conflicts

The store disclosure is present, but the developer says “no AI”

Read the disclosure details and the date of each statement. The developer may mean no generative tools in the creative process while the platform entry concerns a particular shipped asset, or the disclosure may describe a feature added after the statement. Treat the narrower, title-specific evidence as controlling for the category it addresses and ask for clarification if the mismatch remains.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A curator says a game is clean, but the official page is silent

Keep the title unverified. A curator’s confidence can help you decide where to investigate, but silence on the official page does not fill the evidence gap.

An old “No AI” statement predates a major update

Limit the conclusion to the dated build or find a newer statement. New content, a change of developer, added localization or a new live feature can alter the answer without making the old statement false at the time it was issued.

Common mistakes that produce false certainty

  • Equating no disclosure with no use. A missing panel is not a negative certification.
  • Treating an aesthetic judgment as proof. Human artists can make polished or stylized work, and generated work can be edited; appearance alone cannot establish provenance.
  • Assuming one asset answers the whole question. A game may have human-made art and generated localization, or the reverse.
  • Ignoring live systems. A title with no pre-generated AI assets may still create content during play.
  • Using an undated slogan as a permanent guarantee. Claims need a version and date.
  • Applying your definition silently. Tell other players whether your list excludes only shipped content or all generative assistance.
  • Repeating a curator’s conclusion as if it were a platform finding. Keep the source and the judgment distinct.

A quick decision tree

  1. Is there a platform disclosure? If yes, read its categories and compare them with your boundary. If no, continue; do not mark the game AI-free.
  2. Is there a dated developer statement? If yes, record its scope and version. If no, classify the title as unknown.
  3. Does the statement cover the standard you chose? If it covers only shipped content, it cannot answer a question about every production tool.
  4. Do later updates change the scope? Check patches, expansions and live features.
  5. Is your conclusion reproducible? Save the wording, date and source so another player can see why you reached it.

How to publish or share a “no generative AI” list

Label each entry with a precise status rather than a single unqualified check mark. Useful labels include “no disclosed generative content in the current release,” “developer claims no generative AI in the creative process,” and “unknown.” Include the date checked and a short scope note. This approach lets a list remain useful when a game receives new content, and it avoids presenting a community judgment as an audit.

When someone challenges an entry, revisit the primary statement instead of arguing from screenshots or visual impressions. Update the entry if the developer clarifies the claim, the platform disclosure changes or the game’s content changes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bottom line for players

Start with Steam’s disclosure when the game is sold there, use itch.io’s No AI tag to discover smaller projects, and use curator pages to find leads you can verify. Then read a dated developer statement and decide whether its scope matches your own definition of “without generative AI.” When no current, title-specific statement answers that question, the accurate result is unknown—not a confident claim that the game is AI-free.
