On Steam, combine the favorite’s top tags and “More Like This” results with personalized recommendations, Curators, the Interactive Recommender, and Deep Dive explanations. Finally, verify every candidate’s actual mechanics, mood, pace, multiplayer format, platform, and current store details before you commit.
Start by defining what you want to repeat
“Hidden gem” is subjective. It can mean a game that is obscure in your circle, an older release that never became a blockbuster, or simply a title that delivered a very specific experience better than more famous alternatives. Because there is no universal definition, begin with your own reason for loving the game.

Write down two or three qualities you genuinely want in the next game. Be precise enough that they could become search terms or filters:

- Mechanics: deck-building, parrying, factory automation, dialogue choices, stealth, physics puzzles, or another repeatable activity.
- Subgenre: immersive sim rather than merely action, tactical role-playing rather than merely role-playing, or walking simulator rather than merely adventure.
- Setting and mood: abandoned space station, rural mystery, melancholy, comic, tense, cozy, or surreal.
- Pace and difficulty: short runs, methodical exploration, demanding combat, low-pressure management, or a story that advances at your pace.
- Play format: solo, local co-op, online co-op, competitive multiplayer, or a shared-world structure.
A tag-only match often shares a genre while missing the quality that mattered. If you loved a game’s lonely atmosphere and environmental storytelling, a list containing the same broad genre but none of that mood will waste your time. Treat the favorite as a bundle of traits, not as a label.

Use the favorite’s Steam page as your first map
Read the tags instead of accepting the headline genre
Open the favorite’s Steam store page and inspect its tags. Steam’s tagging documentation says the top 20 tags affect tag pages, similar browse views, and which other games appear as similar on a store page. That makes the tag order useful evidence about how Steam is classifying the game, even when the store’s broad genre heading is unhelpful.
Look for the most specific tags that describe the experience you want to repeat. A narrow tag can be more useful than a broad one because fewer games carry it. For example, a specific format or mechanic can reduce noise that appears when you search a huge category such as “Action” or “Adventure.” Record several tags, then mark which two or three correspond to your personal reason for liking the game.
Open the similar-game area
Use the store page’s “More Like This” or similar-game area as a lead generator. These results are influenced by the game’s tags, so they are a practical way to turn your notes into an initial list. Do not assume that every result is a close match: the system may share only one prominent tag, while the candidate differs in tone, length, difficulty, or play format.

Capture a handful of candidates rather than opening every result. For each one, note the shared tag or apparent connection and whether it looks like a familiar hit or a less-known release. The goal at this stage is breadth; evaluation comes later.
Explore the tag pages for alternate paths
Click through the most relevant tags from the favorite’s page. Tag pages can reveal games that do not appear immediately in the store’s similar section, especially when you combine a specific mechanic with a mood, setting, or format. Browse more than one tag because each produces a different slice of the catalog.
Start with the tag that best captures the central activity, then try a second pass using the tag that captures atmosphere or structure. If the first page is dominated by well-known releases, look for older or less visible entries rather than abandoning the tag. A candidate that shares two meaningful traits may be a stronger lead than one that shares five generic tags.

Keep a simple discovery note with three columns: the candidate, the traits it appears to share, and the question you still need to answer. This prevents a long list of attractive covers from becoming an unmanageable backlog.
Compare Steam’s personalized recommendations with human curation
Use the discovery feed as a second signal
Steam’s discovery experience presents personalized recommendations alongside search and community Curators. Valve describes recommendations informed by games you have played and what your friends are enjoying. That signal is different from the favorite’s public tags: it reflects your play activity and, where available, the behavior of people whose tastes overlap with yours.
Check the personalized feed after you have played or wishlisted the favorite and a few related games. Look for candidates that recur across the feed and your tag-based list. A repeated appearance is a reason to investigate, not proof that the game matches your specific appeal.
Follow Curators for editorial context
Community Curators can add a human explanation that an automated list lacks. Follow Curators whose descriptions make clear what they value—such as unusual narrative design, local co-op, demanding tactics, or experimental independent games—and compare their suggestions with your own criteria.
Read the Curator’s reason for including a title. A short recommendation that mentions a shared mechanic is more useful than a generic “recommended” label. Curator tastes are personal, so treat them as another perspective rather than an authority that overrides your requirements.

Valve explains its recommendation approach as a collaborative signal: when players with broadly similar play habits also play a game you have not tried, Steam may consider it a useful recommendation. This is valuable for finding adjacent interests, but it does not know which moment, mechanic, or emotional quality made your hidden gem special.

Valve also notes that exploring the niche end of recommendations can be effective, especially for people who play many games. If your feed keeps returning the same blockbusters, deliberately investigate less prominent results instead of treating popularity as a quality ranking.
Use the Interactive Recommender to escape the obvious results
The Interactive Recommender adds controls that let you filter by tags and adjust the balance between popular and niche games and between recent and classic releases. Use it when the store page and discovery feed are converging on titles you already know.
- Open the Interactive Recommender from Steam’s discovery tools. Begin with the favorite or with the tags you identified, depending on what the interface presents for your account.
- Apply the most specific relevant tags. Add a mechanic or subgenre first; then add mood, setting, or play format if the results remain broad.
- Move the popularity control toward niche. This changes the pool so lesser-known games have a better chance to appear. It does not certify that a title is good or available on your platform.
- Adjust the release-age control toward classic when appropriate. Older games can contain the exact design idea you want, even if newer releases dominate ordinary recommendation lists.
- Return toward the middle if the list becomes too narrow. Remove one filter at a time so you can see which trait was excluding useful candidates.
Use the controls as an experiment. Start with a narrow combination, inspect the results, then change one variable. If you alter tags, popularity, and release age simultaneously, you will not know which choice produced a better list.

Read Deep Dive’s explanation before trusting a match
Steam Deep Dive is designed to show why an exploratory recommendation appeared. It uses tags supplied by game creators and Steam Community users and highlights tags shared with the starting game, making the connection more visible.
When a candidate appears, identify the shared tag that explains it. Then ask whether that shared tag represents your reason for liking the favorite. If the explanation is only a broad category, downgrade the candidate. If it points to the exact mechanic or structure you wrote down, move it to your verification list.
Deep Dive explains similarity; it does not replace inspection. Open the candidate’s store description and features, and check its current platform information and other store details. A shared tag can coexist with a very different camera perspective, campaign length, difficulty curve, or multiplayer requirement.

Build a shortlist around the dimensions that matter
After gathering leads from tags, similar views, personalized recommendations, Curators, the Interactive Recommender, and Deep Dive, reduce the list using consistent questions. These are the comparison axes most relevant to the reader’s goal:

Keep five to ten candidates after this pass. For each, write one sentence beginning “This might fit because…” and one sentence beginning “I still need to check…”. If you cannot explain the first sentence without referring to a generic genre, remove the candidate.

Recommendation systems can repeatedly surface the same popular titles when you use a broad genre. Switch from “games like my favorite” to the narrow mechanic, subgenre, mood, or play format you identified. A phrase describing the experience is usually more useful than the title alone.
For example, if the important trait is not simply role-playing but turn-based combat with a small party and a bleak setting, search and filter around those narrower ideas. If the appeal is cooperative problem-solving rather than action, make the co-op structure and puzzle format the center of the search. This approach follows Valve’s observation that niche exploration can help players who already play many games.
Repeat the process with a different trait if the results are still too familiar. One pass centered on mechanics and another centered on mood can uncover two different groups of candidates; compare them rather than forcing every desired quality into one over-constrained query.

Before buying, installing, or promising a game to friends, inspect the candidate’s own description and features. Confirm the parts that recommendation systems cannot reliably communicate in a single label:
- Read the first several paragraphs of the store description for the actual gameplay loop, not just the promotional tagline.
- Check the listed features for solo, local co-op, online co-op, or competitive modes.
- Review platform and system information for the device you will use.
- Look at screenshots or videos for camera perspective, interface density, art direction, and the apparent pace of play.
- Read recent user-facing store information for warnings about support, accessibility, or mode availability that could affect your decision.
- Compare the candidate with your written two- or three-trait target. Remove it if the strongest evidence points to a different experience.
This check is where a promising similarity becomes a defensible recommendation. It also protects you from a common failure: choosing a game because it resembles the favorite’s marketing language while lacking the feature you actually enjoyed.
Troubleshoot common discovery failures
The results are all famous games
Move the Interactive Recommender toward niche and classic, then apply a specific mechanic or subgenre tag. Browse the corresponding tag pages and inspect candidates beyond the first screen. Popularity is a ranking signal, not a measure of how closely a game matches your personal reason for playing.
The results share a genre but not the feeling
Replace the broad genre with mood, setting, or a more precise structure. Revisit the favorite’s top 20 tags and identify which one describes atmosphere or presentation. Use Deep Dive to see whether a candidate shares that tag, then verify the store description.
The recommendations ignore a key multiplayer requirement
Make play format an explicit filter in your notes and shortlist. Confirm the mode on each candidate’s feature list; do not infer online or local support from screenshots, a genre label, or a Curator’s brief description.
You have too many plausible candidates
Rank each candidate by the number of meaningful traits it shares, then use pace, difficulty, platform, and format as tie-breakers. Keep one or two alternatives that differ in release age or visibility so you are not left with a list of near-identical blockbusters.
A candidate looks perfect but the explanation is vague
Return to Deep Dive or the similar-game view and identify the shared tag. If you cannot connect that tag to your target traits, treat the result as an unrelated recommendation and move on.
A repeatable 15-minute workflow
- Choose one favorite. Do not combine several games before you know which qualities you are trying to reproduce.
- Write two or three target traits. Include at least one concrete mechanic, subgenre, mood, setting, pace, or format.
- Inspect the Steam page. Record the most relevant tags and open “More Like This.”
- Browse the strongest tag pages. Look for candidates outside the most visible releases.
- Check personalized recommendations. Compare the feed with your tag-based list and note recurring titles.
- Consult followed Curators. Read their reasons, not only their game names.
- Run the Interactive Recommender. Apply specific tags and shift popularity or release age toward niche or classic when the list is too familiar.
- Use Deep Dive. Identify the shared tag that explains each promising result.
- Verify the candidate. Check description, features, platform, pace, difficulty, and multiplayer format.
- Keep a short, reasoned shortlist. Every remaining title should have a clear explanation tied to your original traits.
Save the traits and rejected candidates. If you return later, you can change one variable—such as mood instead of mechanics—without starting from an unstructured list.
How to judge whether you found the right kind of hidden gem
A successful discovery does not need to be a clone of the favorite. It should reproduce the quality you cared about while offering its own setting, pacing, or interpretation. The strongest candidates usually have a specific connection you can explain and enough differences to feel like a new game.
Before committing, state the match in one sentence: “I am considering this because it shares [specific trait] and [specific trait], while its [difference] is acceptable.” If you cannot fill that sentence with concrete details from the candidate’s page, keep searching. The combination of personal criteria, Steam’s multiple discovery signals, and direct verification gives you a more reliable path than any single similarity list.
