When a franchise changes direction, search for the mechanics and structure you miss—not merely the franchise name or a broad genre label. Write down the old games’ defining qualities, convert them into specific tags and phrases, use storefront recommendation tools to build a candidate list, then verify each game’s actual play loop, progression, camera, pacing, multiplayer requirements, platform support and price.
Start by defining what you actually miss
“More like the old games” describes a feeling, not a searchable requirement. A franchise can change its combat while keeping its exploration, or retain its setting while replacing a mission-based structure with an open world. If you search only for the franchise name, you may get sequels, licensed products or games that share a setting but not the experience you want.

Describe the older style in concrete terms. Use the questions below as a worksheet and record both the qualities you want and the changes you want to avoid.

| Quality to identify | Questions to answer | Useful description |
|---|---|---|
| Combat loop | What do you do every few seconds? Attack chains, aiming, parrying, turn selection, stealth or positioning? | “Deliberate melee with stamina management,” rather than “good combat” |
| Movement | Is movement itself a skill or mainly a way to travel? Are there dashes, grappling, climbing, vehicles or fixed routes? | “Momentum-based traversal with wall-running” |
| Progression | Do you unlock abilities, improve equipment, choose a build, recruit characters or simply advance through authored chapters? | “Small skill tree and meaningful loadout choices” |
| Exploration | Are levels compact and layered, or is the appeal a large map with optional activities? Are secrets signposted? | “Dense interconnected areas with environmental shortcuts” |
| Camera and perspective | First person, third person, top-down, side-scrolling or a fixed camera? Does the camera change how combat and navigation feel? | “Third-person camera close enough to read enemy animations” |
| Pacing | How often does the game interrupt play with dialogue, menus, crafting, travel or cutscenes? | “Short missions with little downtime” |
| Party structure | Is the protagonist alone, supported by AI companions, or part of a switchable party? Does party composition affect tactics? | “Four-character party with turn-based role choices” |
| Level design | Are areas linear, hub-based, branching, procedural or open-ended? Do revisits reveal new routes? | “Linear chapters with optional challenge rooms” |
| Atmosphere | Which combination of tone, art direction, music, setting and narrative style matters? | “Melancholic science fiction with quiet environmental storytelling” |
Choose three to five qualities that are genuinely decisive. Mark each as must have, prefer or do not want. This prevents a recommendation engine from treating every similarity as equally important. For example, someone may accept a different setting and camera but reject games built around loot grinding.

Turn those qualities into search terms
Use specific mechanics and narrower subgenres as search language. Steam supports searches by title, tag or description, with additional filters, so a short list of precise terms is more useful than a single word such as “action.” Steamworks’ tag guidance specifically discusses genres, subgenres and mechanics such as resource management and choices matter as useful tags. See the Steam Tags documentation.
| If you miss… | Try terms describing… | Do not rely on only… |
|---|---|---|
| Careful, demanding fights | parry, stamina, tactical combat, resource management, precision combat | action |
| Compact exploratory levels | metroidvania, interconnected world, environmental puzzles, backtracking | adventure |
| Authored missions | mission-based, linear, chapter-based, level-based | story-rich |
| Build experimentation | character customization, skill tree, build variety, class-based | RPG |
| Party tactics | party-based, turn-based tactics, squad management, companion system | strategy |
| Low-pressure discovery | walking simulator, exploration, atmospheric, environmental storytelling | open world |
| Shared play | local co-op, online co-op, split screen, shared-screen multiplayer | multiplayer |
Combine terms in small batches. A query built from four highly specific tags may return too few results, while a single broad tag may return thousands. Start with two must-have mechanics and one structural term, inspect the results, then add or remove one term at a time. Keep a second query using synonyms because stores and developers do not always apply identical tags.
Use Steam search as a candidate generator
Steam is a documented example of how to turn this method into a repeatable search. Its discovery tools are useful for producing leads, not for proving that two games feel the same.
- Open the Steam Store search. Enter a mechanic, subgenre or feature rather than only the franchise name. Search can use a title, tag or description, and the results can be narrowed with additional filters. The historical discovery feature overview is available on Steam’s Discovery Update page.
- Apply tag and feature filters. Keep the filters that represent must-have qualities. Remove a filter if it excludes games that use a reasonable synonym or were tagged differently.
- Record candidates without committing to them. Save the title, the matching tags, the perspective, the player mode and any obvious mismatch in a notes list. A result is a hypothesis for further checking.
- Repeat with a different anchor. Run a search based on your combat loop, then another based on level structure or progression. This reduces the chance that one popular tag dominates every result.
Do not assume that a tag means the same thing in every game. “Open world,” for example, can describe a huge continuous map, a set of open hubs or simply freedom to approach missions in multiple ways. Read the description and inspect the screenshots before treating a tag as confirmed.
Expand the list with recommendation surfaces
More Like This
A game’s store page may expose a More Like This area. Use it after your mechanic searches to find titles that share a broad audience or tagging pattern. Open several results rather than choosing the first one; recommendation order is not a guarantee of a close moment-to-moment match.

Discovery Queue and recommendation feed
Steam’s Discovery Queue and recommendation feed can supply additional candidates you would not find through one query. Move through the queue with your worksheet beside you and note why a title appeared. If the title matches only a setting or a broad genre, classify it as a low-priority lead instead of adding it to the main shortlist.
Curator recommendations
Curators can be useful when their stated criteria match your worksheet. Read the curator’s explanation and inspect the game yourself. A curator’s audience, rating habits and preferred genres may differ from yours, so treat the recommendation as an opinionated filter, not an objective similarity score.

Steamworks says a game’s top 20 tags can affect which titles are treated as similar, and notes that more specific tags can carry more influence than common broad tags. The same documentation also says the tag-driven title-similarity display is not a direct reflection of the More Like This algorithm. Those are separate signals, so a title appearing in one surface does not establish that it would appear in another. Read the explanation in Steam’s tag documentation before interpreting a similarity result.
Verify every candidate on its own store page
Recommendation tools compress a complex comparison into a label or placement. Verification is where you determine whether a candidate actually preserves the experience you miss.
Check the core loop
Read the description for the repeated activity between major story moments. Is the game asking you to fight, sneak, solve, build, trade, manage a party or traverse? Look for how often that activity changes and whether optional systems replace the central loop rather than support it.

Check progression and structure
Identify whether progression is a fixed sequence, a skill tree, equipment tiers, randomized loot, character levels or a combination. Confirm whether levels are linear, hub-based, open-world or procedural. A shared genre label can hide a fundamental difference in how much choice the player has.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCheck perspective, pacing and tone
Screenshots and video stills can reveal camera distance, interface density and the scale of environments. Read the description for travel, crafting, dialogue and mission frequency. A game may share combat mechanics but have a much slower pace or a substantially different tone.
Check player support and platform compatibility
Confirm whether the game is single-player, local co-op, online co-op or competitive, and whether the required mode is included in the edition you would buy. Check the platform listing and system requirements for your device. Do not infer controller support, cross-play or console availability from a recommendation badge.
Check cost and edition boundaries
Record the current listed price and distinguish the base game from expansions, bundles, subscriptions or free-to-play content. Prices and availability can change, so treat this as a purchase-time check rather than a permanent feature of the game.
Build a shortlist instead of chasing an endless feed
After reviewing several candidates, reduce the list to three to six games. Score only the qualities you marked as important. A simple worksheet keeps the decision tied to your original reason for searching.

| Comparison axis | What to write down | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Core loop | Primary activity and how often it changes | Determines whether the game feels similar minute to minute |
| Progression | Fixed unlocks, builds, loot, party growth or none | Shows whether long-term decisions resemble the older style |
| Camera and movement | Perspective, traversal abilities and control demands | Can change both combat readability and exploration |
| Level structure | Linear, hubs, open world or procedural; revisit requirements | Controls pacing, discovery and the amount of optional content |
| Tone | Setting, art direction, narrative mood and music | Separates mechanical matches from atmospheric matches |
| Multiplayer needs | Solo, local, online, competitive or optional co-op | Prevents buying a game that requires unavailable players or services |
| Platform and cost | Supported device, edition, current price and extra purchases | Confirms that the candidate is usable within your constraints |
Use a must-have failure rule: if a candidate misses one non-negotiable quality, remove it even if it scores well elsewhere. For preferences, rank candidates rather than rejecting them. This keeps a recommendation feed from persuading you to compromise on the feature that caused the search.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Know what personalized recommendations can and cannot do
Valve’s July 11, 2019 announcement for its Interactive Recommender described suggestions based on players’ histories and habits. It explained the rationale this way: “The idea is that if players with broadly similar play habits to you also tend to play another game you haven’t tried yet, then that game is likely to be a good recommendation for you.” The announcement also described controls for release window and popularity. Read the historical explanation in Valve’s 2019 Interactive Recommender announcement.
That model had a cold-start limitation: a game with no player data could not be recommended by that model. Do not treat a recommendation feed as a complete catalog of new, obscure or newly released games. Pair personalized suggestions with direct tag searches and new-release discovery when freshness matters. The 2019 post describes the system at launch; it does not establish the exact implementation of every current Steam recommendation surface.
Use community discussion carefully
Community questions can reveal useful vocabulary when you do not know the name of a subgenre or mechanic. One Steam Community participant phrased the problem as, “How do i find more games similar a game I enjoy?” The wording is an anecdotal example of the question players ask, not evidence about search volume or a ranking of solutions. Browse discussions for the terms people use, then verify every suggested title against your worksheet.

Best Value
Troubleshoot weak or misleading results
The results are too broad
Replace a genre word with a mechanic or structure, add one must-have feature, and remove franchise or setting terms that are attracting superficial matches. Search again with a second synonym rather than adding many filters at once.
The results are too narrow
Remove the least important filter, search each must-have quality separately, and inspect games that share two of the three qualities. Developers may use different tags for the same behavior, so try related terms and read descriptions.
Recommendations keep showing sequels or the same popular games
Use the recommendation surface only to seed the list, then return to tag and description searches. Adjust release-window or popularity controls where the feature provides them, and look at new-release discovery for titles with limited play history.
A supposedly similar game feels wrong
Identify the mismatch: camera, pacing, progression, level structure, tone or multiplayer requirement. Remove the misleading tag from your next query and add the missing quality. This turns a bad result into a better search specification.
A new game has little or no recommendation data
Rely on its store description, screenshots, feature list and platform information, then compare its stated mechanics with your worksheet. Personalized systems may not surface titles without sufficient player history, so direct inspection is essential for new releases.
A repeatable 15-minute workflow
- Write three must-have qualities and two deal-breakers from the older games.
- Convert each quality into one or two mechanic, subgenre or feature terms.
- Run a Steam search by tag or description and apply only the most important filters.
- Open several results and record the matching evidence, not just the title.
- Use More Like This, Discovery Queue, the recommendation feed and relevant curators to add different leads.
- Check each candidate’s core loop, progression, camera, pacing, tone, player support, platform and current edition.
- Remove any title that fails a must-have quality and rank the remaining three to six.
- If the list is stale or repetitive, change the search anchor and include direct new-release discovery.
The result is a shortlist based on the specific parts of the old style you value, with recommendation tools doing the repetitive discovery work and your own checks deciding whether a candidate truly fits.
