You can watch TV shows without adding a paid subscription by using official, ad-supported streaming services such as Tubi, Plex, and The Roku Channel. Browse or search the service’s own catalog, then check the specific show and episode for a free, subscription, rental, or TV-provider access label before you press play. Free catalogs usually include ads, and availability depends on your country, device, and current licensing.
Where can I watch TV shows for free legally?
Start with an official service website or app, or find the app in your TV or streaming device’s official app store. Tubi describes its service as free and legal, with short ad breaks supporting programming from studio and independent partners. It also says it does not ask for credit-card information. For a free option, look for an ad-supported catalog rather than a page promising access to any show without explaining who provides it. A free app does not mean every title inside it is free: catalogs may sit alongside paid tiers, rentals, or apps that require a cable or satellite login.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesHow to find a show and check whether it is free
- Check the devices you already own. Open your smart TV’s app store, streaming player’s channel store, or the official service website or app. Tubi lists access on the web and on Android, iOS, Roku, Apple TV, Amazon Fire TV, Xfinity X1, Xbox, Samsung and Sony smart TVs, and PlayStation. Treat that list as Tubi’s stated support, and confirm the app and catalog are available in your location. Tubi: Watch Free Movies and TV Shows
- Browse an official free-content section. On Roku, the documented route is Streaming Channels > Top Free. Review a channel’s details before adding it; this marketplace shortcut helps find free channels, but does not guarantee every show within an app is free. Roku Support: How do I find free movies and TV shows?
- Search the service’s own catalog or guide. Decide whether you want to select an episode on demand or watch a scheduled channel. Plex offers both free, ad-supported on-demand shows and movies and internet-streamed live channels. Plex Support: Plex: Free vs Paid Plex Support: Free Live TV Streaming on Plex Overview
- Open the exact show, season, and episode. Check its access label for words such as free, premium, rent, subscribe, or sign in with a TV provider. If playback requires a provider login, the app may be using an existing cable or satellite subscription to unlock content. Roku says each network decides which programs and episodes it makes available. Roku Support: Cable or satellite subscription content
- Confirm that the service works where you are. Check your country and device against the service’s current official listing. Availability can differ even when the same service name appears in an app store.

On-demand shows versus live TV channels
On-demand
On-demand libraries let you choose a title and episode when you want to watch. Search for the exact program, then check that the episode is included in the free catalog. A service may carry some seasons or episodes but not others.

Live channels
Live streaming channels follow a schedule, so you tune in to what is airing rather than selecting any episode from a catalog. Plex’s internet-streamed Live TV is free and ad-supported and does not require tuner hardware or an antenna. Plex also supports a separate setup in which a compatible tuner and antenna connected to a server can bring in local over-the-air broadcasts; recording that broadcast content requires Plex Pass. How to avoid unofficial or misleading free-streaming offers
- Use the service’s official website or an app from your device’s official store.
- Be wary of sites that prompt you to install an unknown app or APK, disable device protections, or use a VPN to access an unofficial library.
- Check the individual title’s terms. A free service may offer paid rentals, premium content, or episodes that require TV-provider authentication.
Tubi specifically warns about unsafe free-streaming sites and says its app does not require a VPN; that is Tubi’s guidance about its service, not a universal legal test. Tubi Help Center: Is Tubi really free and legal?
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. If the app or show is not available
The app does not appear on your device
Check the service’s current supported-device list and your device’s app store before buying new hardware. For example, Tubi lists a range of phones, TVs, consoles, and streaming players, while Roku lists specific device and market combinations for The Roku Channel. A Roku streaming device is only one possible way to access services; it is unnecessary if a supported TV, phone, computer, or player you already own has the app.

The show appears but asks for payment or a provider login
That title or episode may not be included in the free offer. Check another season or episode, search a different official free service, or use a free catalog’s live guide if you are open to scheduled viewing. Do not assume that an app’s overall “free” label applies to every item.
You want local broadcast channels
An antenna and compatible tuner are an optional route to local over-the-air broadcasts through Plex, distinct from Plex’s internet-streamed channels and on-demand library. Confirm tuner compatibility and the setup requirements in Plex’s support information before purchasing equipment. Plex Support: Plex: Free vs Paid
