How to Find Every Side Quest in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

The reliable way to find every Breath of the Wild Side Quest is to sweep Hyrule region by region, checking towns, stables and named NPCs while recording each quest’s prerequisites, time window and requested items. Use the Adventure Log to confirm what your save has discovered, and decide in advance whether your checklist includes downloadable-content quests. Published guides agree on 76 base-game Side Quests, while the Zelda Dungeon Wiki lists 77, so your completed Adventure Log—not a headline number—is the final authority for an individual save.

First, define what counts as a Side Quest

Breath of the Wild separates optional objectives into different Adventure Log categories. A Side Quest is not automatically a Main Quest, Shrine Quest or an activity that never enters the log. Keep those groups separate when you build a checklist:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Side Quests: the optional quests this guide is helping you locate.
  • Main Quests: story objectives, including the central journey and major character missions.
  • Shrine Quests: puzzles or investigations associated with a shrine; Zelda Dungeon catalogs these with their associated Shrine rather than in its Side Quest list.
  • Unlogged activities: some optional errands and discoveries do not appear in the Adventure Log at all, according to Zelda Dungeon’s catalog. Completing one does not increase a Side Quest total.

Set the scope of your checklist before counting. The 76 figure used by Zelda Dungeon’s regional catalog and by Piggyback’s guide refers to the base game. Zelda Dungeon separately identifies 14 additional Side Quests from downloadable content: 13 in the paid Expansion Pass and one free quest tied to the Xenoblade Chronicles 2 crossover. If you own the DLC, mark those 14 as a separate column instead of mixing them into the base-game total.

How many Side Quests are there?

There is no single uncontested number in the published references:

The 76-versus-77 disagreement may reflect different classification or counting methods. Do not “correct” your game by forcing either number. Open your own Adventure Log, count discovered Side Quest entries, and verify the individual titles on your checklist. A guide total is a planning aid; the save file is the authority on what you have actually found.

Build a region-by-region sweep

A regional list prevents the most common mistake: repeatedly revisiting familiar villages while missing a stable, an outlying house or an NPC who appears only after a prerequisite. Use a catalog organized by region as your backbone. Zelda Dungeon’s catalog provides regional ordering, map locations and a dedicated walkthrough for each entry. Piggyback describes the same regional approach with maps of both quest-giver and destination locations.

1. Choose a starting region and finish its checklist

Pick one region, open its town and stable entries, and work outward to named NPCs in nearby settlements and roads. For each title, record the giver, starting area, objective, requirement and completion status. Do not mark a quest as “found” merely because you visited the area: the trigger may require a conversation, a particular time or an earlier quest.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Sweep towns and stables deliberately

At each settlement, speak to every named resident you can reach, then return at different story stages if a guide lists a progression gate. Stables are easy to skip because they sit outside towns; include their staff and travelers in the same regional pass. Compare your notes with a map that distinguishes the giver from the destination, since a quest may begin in one location and finish several kilometers away.

Use a consistent route so that an incomplete sweep is obvious. For example, clear the central settlement first, then its stable, then nearby roads and houses before moving to the next map area. Put a mark beside NPCs who had no quest dialogue rather than deleting them from your notes. That distinction tells you to check a prerequisite or schedule later instead of assuming the character has no Side Quest.

3. Mark prerequisites beside the title

Write requirements directly beside each quest name. A compact record might contain: Quest — giver/start — prerequisite — time window — requested item — destination — Adventure Log status. This prevents a failed first conversation from looking like a missing quest.

Also record whether the condition is a quest, a Main Quest, a time window, an item, or an action. “Return seven cuccos,” for instance, is an objective with a quantity, not merely a note to visit a location. Separating these condition types makes troubleshooting faster when a dialogue option does not appear.

4. Revisit after major story progress

Some characters change what they offer after a Main Quest or another Side Quest. If a regional sweep has no entry for a known NPC, check the requirement field before abandoning the area. Piggyback’s examples include a Main Quest gate, chain dependencies, times of day and item requests, so a single visit is not always enough.

5. Close the region before moving on

Before traveling onward, compare your regional rows with the Adventure Log and mark each as not checked, giver found, discovered, in progress or complete. Leave an explicit note for every blocked entry, including what must happen next. A region is ready to close when every listed giver has been checked and every unresolved row has a documented reason, not simply because the currently available quests are finished.

Use a spoiler level that fits your playthrough

You can find quests without reading every solution. Zelda Dungeon offers an interactive-map view that shows required starting information and location objectives in tooltips, while its linked walkthroughs reveal fuller directions. Start with the map-only information if you want to preserve discoveries; open a full walkthrough only when a trigger, route or objective remains unclear. Keep a second, spoiler-heavy checklist for exact item requirements and completion steps so you do not expose later objectives while exploring.

When comparing references, check six practical features: base-game versus DLC coverage, regional organization, whether prerequisites and schedules are listed, map support, spoiler level and how the source handles the 76/77 disagreement. A title-only index may be quick to search but still leave you unable to trigger a quest. A map with giver and destination markers reduces travel confusion, while a full walkthrough is most useful only after the log shows the quest and its objective.

Check the Adventure Log as you go

Nintendo’s guidance says to open the Adventure Log with the + Button to check what to do next. Zelda Dungeon Wiki identifies Side Quests as the third Adventure Log tab. Use that tab after each regional session:

  1. Press + to open the Adventure Log.
  2. Open the Side Quests tab and compare its discovered titles with your regional checklist.
  3. Read the selected quest’s current objective before traveling; it can reveal that a chain has advanced or that an item still needs to be delivered.
  4. Record titles that are discovered but unfinished, then return to the giver or destination indicated by the objective.
  5. At the end of the region, count only the entries you intend to include in your chosen scope: base game, DLC, or both.

The log tracks discovered quests, not every optional thing you can do. An activity absent from the log should not be used to explain a 76/77 mismatch, and a quest you have not triggered will not appear simply because you completed a nearby objective.

Keep “discovered” and “complete” separate in your notes. The title appearing in the log confirms that its trigger fired, but it does not prove that you delivered the final item, completed the final action or collected the reward. When a quest remains in the log, read its current objective rather than repeating the opening conversation.

Quest triggers that commonly hide a missing entry

Prerequisite chains

“By Firefly’s Light” is listed by Zelda Dungeon as requiring both “Find the Fairy Fountain” and “Flown the Coop.” If it is absent, verify each prerequisite in the Adventure Log and complete the required actions before checking the giver again.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Piggyback describes a longer Koko chain: “Koko’s Kitchen,” followed by “Cooking with Koko,” “Koko Cuisine” and “Koko’s Specialty.” Later requests depend on earlier steps. Treat these as four separate checklist rows, not one mission with several optional objectives. If only the first title is present, finish it and then check the same character for the next chain step.

Main-Quest or story-progress gates

Piggyback’s “Arrows of Burning Heat” example requires completing “Seek Out Impa” before speaking to Rola. If the NPC has no quest marker or dialogue, confirm that the story requirement is complete rather than assuming the entry is unavailable in your edition. Write the exact Main Quest name beside the Side Quest so you can verify progress in the correct Adventure Log category.

Time-of-day windows

“Playtime with Cottla” is triggered by speaking to Cottla between noon and 4 p.m., according to Piggyback’s example. “By Firefly’s Light” requires visiting Lasli at home from 10 p.m. onward after its other prerequisites are met. When a character is not present, advance time and check the precise window rather than repeatedly speaking to whoever is nearby. Note whether the condition is a narrow window or an evening start, because arriving at the wrong hour can look like a missing prerequisite.

Requested items and materials

Several Piggyback examples involve specific ingredients or materials. Read the exact request, carry the required quantity, and return to the correct NPC; possessing a similar item is not enough if the objective calls for a named ingredient. “Flown the Coop,” for example, directs you to return seven cuccos to their enclosure. Count the animals you have returned before leaving the area. If the objective does not advance, reread the log for the exact item or quantity instead of substituting a comparable material.

A practical checklist template

Copy this structure into a notebook or spreadsheet and create one row per Side Quest:

Field What to record
Quest title The exact title shown in the Adventure Log.
Region The regional section where the giver is located.
Giver and start point NPC name, town, stable or named location.
Prerequisites Earlier Side Quests, Main Quests, story progress, items or materials.
Timing Any stated hour range or schedule.
Objective The current action and destination, without replacing the game’s wording.
Status Not checked, giver found, discovered, in progress or complete.
Scope Base game or DLC, so totals remain comparable.

Add a notes column for failed triggers and return times. “Spoke to NPC at the wrong hour” and “waiting for Seek Out Impa” are useful diagnostic records; “not here” is not. If you use two guides, add a source column so a 76/77 discrepancy is visible instead of silently merging lists.

What to do when one quest is still missing

  1. Confirm the scope. Check whether the missing title belongs to the base game or to the 14-quest DLC set.
  2. Check the correct log tab. A Shrine Quest or Main Quest will not belong in the Side Quest list.
  3. Search by giver, not destination. Return to the NPC’s starting area; the destination may be in another region.
  4. Review prerequisites. Look for an unfinished chain entry, a required Main Quest or a prerequisite such as “Find the Fairy Fountain” or “Flown the Coop.”
  5. Check time and schedule. Try the stated hour range, including the noon-to-4 p.m. window for Cottla and the 10 p.m.-onward visit to Lasli when applicable.
  6. Carry the exact requested item. Re-read the objective and verify quantities, such as the seven cuccos in “Flown the Coop.”
  7. Revisit after progression. Complete the listed story step, then speak to the NPC again.
  8. Compare two lists only after your save is checked. The Zelda Dungeon/Piggyback total is 76, while the Zelda Dungeon Wiki lists 77; a discrepancy between lists may be classification rather than a problem with your game.

If a quest remains unaccounted for, make a second pass focused only on blocked rows. Visit each giver at the documented time, confirm every prerequisite title is complete, and inspect the objective text for an item or destination you overlooked. This targeted pass is more efficient than restarting an entire region without notes.

Base game, DLC and crossover: keep three totals

For a clean completion record, maintain separate totals for (1) base-game Side Quests, (2) the 13 paid Expansion Pass Side Quests and (3) the one free Xenoblade Chronicles 2 crossover quest. This produces a transparent 76 + 13 + 1 layout when you follow the Zelda Dungeon catalog’s classification, while preserving the note that another Zelda Dungeon Wiki page counts 77 in the base game. Label the source and scope in your spreadsheet rather than silently changing the denominator.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Expansion Pass quests are additional paid content, while the crossover quest is identified separately as free. Do not assume that owning the game automatically gives you the 13 paid entries. If you are checking a friend’s total, first ask whether the Expansion Pass is installed and whether the free crossover quest has been included. Keep DLC rows visually distinct so a missing add-on quest is not mistaken for a missing base-game entry.

If you are comparing your progress with a friend, ask which DLC they own and which list they used. “All Side Quests” can mean 76 base-game entries, 77 according to the wiki, or the base game plus 14 DLC entries. A shared checklist should state its definition at the top.

Choosing between online and print references

The free regional catalog is useful when you want searchable entries, an interactive map and individual walkthroughs with adjustable spoiler depth. Piggyback’s guide is useful when you prefer a physical regional chapter and printed maps of quest givers and destinations; its publisher states that the chapter covers all 76 base-game Side Quests. Neither format removes the need to verify prerequisites and timing in your own Adventure Log. Check the edition and current availability of any printed guide before buying, because the cited material does not establish inventory or a current price.

A print guide is optional rather than a requirement: the online catalog and map provide a no-cost alternative for organizing the sweep. If you buy a guidebook, confirm that its edition covers Breath of the Wild Side Quests and decide whether you also need DLC coverage. Do not treat a retailer’s listing, price or stock as permanent; those details change independently of the quest information.

A completion routine that avoids backtracking

  1. Choose one region and copy every base-game title into your checklist.
  2. Visit its towns, stables and named NPCs, recording the giver and any visible requirement.
  3. Complete immediately available quests, but leave a note when a chain or story gate blocks the next entry.
  4. Use the Adventure Log to separate discovered, active and completed titles.
  5. Return at the required time or after the required story step, then update the row.
  6. Move to the next region only when the current list has no unchecked giver or unresolved prerequisite.
  7. Run a final pass for DLC, using separate labels for the 13 paid Expansion Pass quests and the free crossover quest.
  8. Compare your final title list with the published 76-entry catalog and note any remaining 77-count discrepancy instead of inventing an extra quest.

At the end, export or photograph your checklist if you want a permanent record. The important comparison is title by title: which entries are discovered, which are complete and which are blocked. A percentage based on an unexplained denominator can hide DLC or classification differences, whereas three labeled totals show exactly what remains.

Why a title-only list is not enough

Quest names alone cannot tell you whether an NPC appears at a particular hour, whether another quest must be finished first, or whether an item request has a quantity requirement. The examples above show three different failure modes: a chain dependency in Koko’s missions, a story gate before speaking to Rola, and schedule windows for Cottla and Lasli. A useful “find every quest” guide therefore records trigger conditions and directions alongside each title, then uses the Adventure Log to confirm that the trigger actually fired.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find every Side Quest in Breath of the Wild?

Use a regional catalog as your master list, check every town, stable and named NPC, and record prerequisites, time windows, item requests and destinations. Confirm each discovery in the Side Quests tab of the Adventure Log, then revisit blocked entries after the required story step or time window.

Is the total 76 or 77?

Zelda Dungeon’s catalog and Piggyback both state 76 base-game Side Quests. The Zelda Dungeon Wiki lists 77. Because the counting method behind the difference is not resolved here, use the titles in your own Adventure Log and label which source and scope your checklist follows.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How many DLC Side Quests should I add?

Zelda Dungeon identifies 14 additional quests: 13 from the paid Expansion Pass and one free Xenoblade Chronicles 2 crossover quest. Keep those categories separate from the base-game total.

Why does an NPC have no quest for me?

Check for an earlier Side Quest, a Main Quest gate, a specific hour or a required item. The examples include “Seek Out Impa” before “Arrows of Burning Heat,” noon to 4 p.m. for “Playtime with Cottla,” and 10 p.m. onward for Lasli in “By Firefly’s Light.”

Does every optional activity appear in the Adventure Log?

No. Zelda Dungeon notes that some extras are not listed in the log. Count only entries classified as Side Quests, and keep Shrine Quests, Main Quests and unlogged activities in separate records.

Do I need to buy a guidebook?

No. The online regional catalog and interactive map are free alternatives. Piggyback’s print guide is optional if you prefer regional chapters and printed maps; verify its edition, current stock and price before purchasing, since those details can change.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the fastest reliable way to locate a missing Side Quest?

Start with the NPC’s region and starting location, then check prerequisites, schedule and exact item requirements. Confirm the Side Quests tab in the Adventure Log before comparing guide totals.

Should DLC quests be included in a 100% checklist?

Include them only if your checklist says so. Track the 13 paid Expansion Pass quests and the one free Xenoblade Chronicles 2 crossover quest in separate DLC columns.

Why is my count different from an online list?

Published counts differ: Zelda Dungeon and Piggyback use 76 base-game quests, while the Zelda Dungeon Wiki lists 77. Classification or counting methods may differ, so compare individual titles in your save.

What does a quest marked discovered still require?

Read its current Adventure Log objective. Discovered means the trigger fired; completion may still require a delivery, destination action or final reward hand-in.

The Bottom Line

For the most dependable completion record, sweep Hyrule by region, log every giver and trigger condition, and verify progress in the Adventure Log. Keep base-game, paid Expansion Pass and free crossover quests separate, and treat the 76-versus-77 disagreement as a guide-list difference rather than a problem with your save.
