How to Find Entry-Level Tech Jobs in Texas When Hiring Slows

Start with several related job titles, search WorkInTexas and employer career pages, and use your local Workforce Solutions office before paying for training. Texas hiring has cooled in some technology-related segments, but it has not stopped statewide. The Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) dashboard showed 14,469,300 nonfarm jobs and a 4.4% seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in August 2026. A slower market rewards a documented, local search rather than waiting for one perfect “junior tech” listing.

This guide explains how to test demand in your Texas metro, identify realistic entry-level role families, use free public services, compare training choices, and adjust when applications do not produce interviews.

Are Texas tech companies still hiring?

Yes, but the available statewide indicators describe a mixed market, not a count of entry-level technology vacancies. TWC’s August 2026 dashboard showed a large overall labor market, while its July 2026 employment release showed different directions within broad industries.

Indicator Latest period What it tells you
Texas nonfarm employment 14,469,300 in August 2026 Statewide employment scale; it does not isolate technology or entry-level jobs.
Seasonally adjusted unemployment 4.4% in August 2026 Statewide labor-market conditions, not the odds for a particular occupation.
Jobs added over the year 165,600 through July 2026 Net statewide change across industries.
Information industry Down 10,900 jobs (4.9%) year over year through July 2026 A contraction in a broad industry that includes, but is not limited to, technology work.
Professional and Business Services Up 67,000 jobs (3.2%) year over year through July 2026 Growth in a broad category that contains many technical and nontechnical roles.

The July figures come from TWC’s August 21, 2026 release. “Information” is not synonymous with software, and Professional and Business Services includes occupations outside technology. Use these numbers to understand the backdrop, not to infer that a specific employer is hiring.

A separate TWC Texas Workforce Report gives a dated measure of cooling demand. Statewide job openings peaked at 1,096,000 in April 2022 and were 575,000 in June 2025. The June 2025 openings rate was 3.9%, compared with 7.6% at the 2022 peak. Openings exceeded hires by 40,000 in June 2025 and had exceeded hires every month since September 2024. Those are statewide JOLTS observations ending in June 2025, so they are useful context rather than a live count of Texas tech vacancies.

The practical conclusion is straightforward: companies are still recruiting, but fewer openings and more selective screening can make an entry-level search take longer. Measure the market in your own metro and target employers whose current advertisements match your skills.

Which entry-level IT jobs can you get in Texas?

Use occupation names as search experiments, not promises of a guaranteed career ladder. TWC’s 2025 Report on Texas Growth Occupations projects growth in selected Texas industries from 2022 through 2032:

Occupation and industry table Average employment 2022 Projected employment 2032 Change 2024 annual median wage*
Software developers, Professional, Scientific, and Technical Services 45,657 75,319 +29,662 (65.0%) $127,598
Computer user support specialists, Professional, Scientific, and Technical Services 20,701 30,726 +10,025 (48.4%) $57,270

*These are occupation-wide annual medians for the industry table, not entry-level offers or starting salaries.

Computer user support and help desk

Search for “computer user support specialist,” “help desk technician,” “service desk analyst,” “desktop support,” and “IT support technician.” Read each advertisement for its actual requirements: customer-service work, ticketing systems, Windows or macOS troubleshooting, account administration, networking basics, shift coverage, and on-site expectations may vary. A projection for the occupation does not mean every posting accepts applicants without experience.

Junior software development

Try “junior software developer,” “associate software engineer,” “application developer,” “QA automation,” and “developer intern.” Compare the languages, frameworks, testing tools, and portfolio evidence requested in live ads. Some employers accept a degree or demonstrable projects; others request prior professional experience even when “junior” appears in the title.

Adjacent technology-support roles

Search “technical support representative,” “implementation coordinator,” “IT operations assistant,” “systems analyst trainee,” “network technician,” and “data or application support.” These roles can reveal local demand when a narrow title produces few results, but evaluate duties rather than assuming one role automatically leads to another.

TWC cautions in its 2025 growth-occupations report: “While this report shows the most in-demand occupations in Texas for the 2022 through 2032 period, it is important to remember that each employer needs a unique combination of technical skills, education, work experience, and even soft skills for each of these jobs at each of their workplaces.” Treat the projection as a reason to investigate, then let current postings determine your next skill-building step.

Step 1: Build a broad search in WorkInTexas

WorkInTexas.com is TWC’s online job-matching and workforce-services system. It combines job postings with résumé tools, state applications, and education and training discovery.

  1. Create or update your profile. Enter your location, work authorization information, education, certifications, skills, and preferred schedule accurately. Use plain terms employers use in advertisements, such as “Active Directory,” “ticketing,” “Python,” or “customer support,” only when you can discuss or demonstrate them.
  2. Run several title searches. Search one role family at a time: for example, “help desk,” “computer user support,” “desktop support,” “junior developer,” and “QA tester.” Save searches instead of relying on one phrase.
  3. Set a realistic geography. Search your workforce area, nearby cities, and remote roles separately. A remote filter can attract applicants from across the country, so do not assume it is less competitive than a local on-site opening.
  4. Read the complete posting. Record minimum experience, education, certifications, shift, travel, salary information, application deadline, and required tools. “Entry level” in a title does not override a stated experience requirement.
  5. Revisit results. Hiring changes daily. Check saved searches on a schedule and remove closed or duplicate requisitions from your tracker.

Use WorkInTexas to discover employers and requirements, not as the only source of openings. Some companies post exclusively on their own career sites or close advertisements quickly.

Step 2: Verify openings on employer and public-sector career pages

When a WorkInTexas result interests you, find the employer’s official careers page and confirm that the requisition is still open, that the location matches, and that the job identification number is the same. Apply through the channel the employer specifies and keep a copy of the submitted materials.

State agencies, public universities, cities, counties, and school districts often use their own application systems. TWC states that a résumé does not substitute for a required State of Texas Application. If an announcement asks for supplemental questions, transcripts, writing samples, or references, submit each item in the requested format.

Tailor evidence instead of changing keywords only

  • For support roles, describe a real troubleshooting sequence: symptom, diagnosis, fix, documentation, and user communication.
  • For development roles, link to a small, working project and explain testing, version control, and what you changed after feedback.
  • For operations or implementation roles, show a process you organized, a data-quality check, or a measurable service improvement.
  • Translate nontechnical work honestly. Retail, hospitality, teaching, volunteering, and military experience can demonstrate queue management, incident escalation, documentation, and communication.

Step 3: Get free local help through Workforce Solutions

Texas has 28 locally managed workforce development boards that coordinate with TWC and operate Workforce Solutions offices. The state says job seekers can receive help finding work and accessing training at no cost. The Texas Jobs page also links to the American Job Center directory.

Step 4: Test demand in your own Texas labor market

A statewide forecast cannot tell you whether there are openings near your home this week. TWC’s Labor Market and Career Information services provide several ways to check:

  • Texas LMI and Texas Labor Analysis: investigate employment and industry patterns by area.
  • Texas Wages: compare wage data while noting the occupation, geography, period, and experience mix behind each figure.
  • Employment projections and regional profiles: examine longer-term direction and local context.
  • Online postings and Monthly Help Wanted Online: count current advertisements and the skills employers mention.
  • Texas Career Check: explore occupations and related requirements before committing to a path.

Make a simple weekly snapshot: count distinct openings for each target title in your metro, note the date posted, and tally recurring tools and requirements. Do not count every repost as a new job. Compare the pattern with the employer’s own site before applying.

Step 5: Choose training for a specific gap

Do not buy a course merely because hiring feels slow. First collect 10 to 15 relevant postings and highlight requirements that recur. Then decide whether you need a short class, a public workshop, a portfolio project, a certification, or supervised experience.

Use Texas training information first

TWC’s State Training Inventory collects Texas provider and program information, including enrollment and graduation data where available. MyTXCareer can match occupations to your background and let you request information about local training. Use both tools to create a shortlist, then verify details directly with each provider.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For every program, check:

  • Curriculum alignment with the tools named in your target postings.
  • Total cost, books, exam fees, payment schedule, and refund policy.
  • Length, class times, attendance rules, and online versus in-person delivery.
  • Eligibility for public funding or Workforce Solutions support.
  • Completion, placement, and wage information, including how each measure is defined.
  • Projects, labs, employer connections, and instructor access.

The public sources do not establish that any particular paid credential is necessary for entry-level technology work. A focused project, documented troubleshooting practice, or free learning resource may close your gap more efficiently than a long program. Ask a Workforce Solutions counselor to review your plan before you spend money.

Step 6: Compare role paths and postings with the same scorecard

When deciding between support, development, and another technology family, score each option using evidence from current local advertisements.

Comparison factor Questions to record
Local demand How many distinct, recently posted jobs appear in your commute area or acceptable remote range?
Entry requirements Do ads ask for zero experience, internships, customer-service experience, a degree, or a specific certification?
Recurring skills Which tools, languages, platforms, tickets, databases, or security practices appear repeatedly?
Training burden Can you demonstrate the recurring skills with a project or short course, and what will it cost and take?
Work arrangement Are shifts, weekends, travel, on-call work, on-site attendance, or background checks involved?
Wage evidence What does local occupation data show, and how does it differ from the entry-level pay actually listed?

For a training route, add provider transparency, eligibility, curriculum fit, and verifiable outcomes. TWC tools help you collect these facts; they do not rank one path as best for every person.

What to do when applications produce no interviews

After 10 targeted applications

Check accuracy before changing careers. Confirm that your résumé names the required tools, that your location and schedule match, that documents were uploaded successfully, and that you answered screening questions consistently. Ask a Workforce Solutions adviser or trusted professional to review one application against the posting.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

After 20 to 30 applications with no response

Use your tracker to find a pattern. If most ads reject candidates for experience, shift toward internships, contract-to-hire support, campus technology jobs, volunteer help-desk work, or a role with a closer requirement match. If employers view applications but do not interview, improve the opening summary and project evidence. If few suitable jobs exist nearby, expand the geography or add an adjacent title rather than applying indiscriminately.

When a posting asks for tools you have not used

Separate essential requirements from preferred ones. Build a small, honest demonstration using the tool, document what you learned, and state the scope clearly. Never claim production experience you do not have. A portfolio cannot replace a mandatory license, clearance, or work authorization requirement.

When a job disappears

Save the employer, title, and requirements in your tracker. Search the employer’s site for a replacement requisition and sign up for alerts when offered. Closed postings are a signal to keep multiple applications active, not evidence that every Texas employer has stopped hiring.

How to search “tech jobs near me” without missing good matches

Search by function, not only by the word “technology.” A hospital may call its help desk “clinical systems support,” a manufacturer may use “controls systems technician,” and a school district may advertise “technology services specialist.” Combine a role family with city or county names, then inspect duties and requirements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Maintain three geographic bands:

  1. Primary: jobs reachable with your normal commute or fully remote roles whose location rules you meet.
  2. Secondary: nearby workforce areas where occasional travel or relocation is realistic.
  3. Longer-term: employers worth monitoring while you build skills, even if no current opening fits.

This approach answers “Where can I find tech jobs near me in Texas?” with a repeatable method rather than a static list of employers.

Keeping your search current

Record the employer, title, location, posting date, source, required skills, application date, response, and next action. Review the sheet weekly. Once a month, refresh TWC employment, wage, projection, and posting tools because statewide indicators and individual requisitions move on different schedules.

Keep the periods attached to every number you use: TWC’s dashboard values are from August 2026, its employment release covers July 2026, the statewide openings measure ends in June 2025, and the occupation projections cover 2022–2032. That discipline prevents a long-range forecast from being mistaken for a vacancy today.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a computer science degree for an entry-level tech job in Texas?

Not every posting requires one. Read the education and experience fields in each live advertisement; some employers accept projects, related work, or certifications, while others specify a degree.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are the $57,270 and $127,598 figures starting salaries?

No. They are 2024 annual median wages for occupation-wide roles in the Professional, Scientific, and Technical Services industry table. Entry-level pay can be lower and should be checked in the individual posting or local wage data.

Should I pay for a certification before applying?

Usually, apply first when you meet the stated minimums. Use recurring requirements in local postings and advice from Workforce Solutions to decide whether a certification fills a specific gap; no cited source makes a particular paid credential universally necessary.

How often should I check Texas job postings?

Use saved searches and revisit them regularly, then verify promising listings on the employer’s own career page. Track dates so you do not spend time on closed or duplicate requisitions.
