How to Find Entry-Level Jobs in the Video Game Industry: A Practical 2026 Guide

The fastest credible route into game work is to choose one discipline, build a small but inspectable body of work for that discipline, and search several channels at once. Start with current studio career pages and the IGDA Career Center, then add Discord job channels, local IGDA chapters, special-interest groups, game jams, open-source projects, internships and mentorship. A degree can help for some vacancies, but employers do not treat one qualification as universal; a QA job may be worth pursuing, but it is not a guaranteed bridge into development.

Your application should make three things obvious: the role you want, what you personally made, and where a hiring team can examine or play it. The steps below show how to do that while accounting for a crowded entry-level market.

Choose a role family before you search

“Entry level in games” is not one job. Engineering, art, design, production, quality assurance, audio, user experience, writing, marketing and player support each use different tools and judge different kinds of evidence. Pick a primary role family first; you can add a closely related option later, but an unfocused application makes it difficult for a reviewer to see your fit.

Start with the work, not the job title

Read the IGDA Entry-Level Skills Hub, dated 26 April 2024, for role-specific skills, portfolio examples and interview preparation. Use it as a framework, then compare every point with current descriptions on employer career pages. Titles vary between studios, so read the responsibilities and required skills rather than filtering only by a familiar label.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Engineering: look for listings that specify the programming, engine or systems knowledge expected, then show those skills in a playable project or inspectable code sample.
  • Art: identify whether the vacancy emphasizes character, environment, technical, concept or another art specialty and assemble work that matches that specialty.
  • Design: show how you shaped mechanics, levels, systems or player experiences, with a clear explanation of your decisions.
  • Production: demonstrate planning, coordination and delivery through a completed collaborative project, game jam or other documented team effort.
  • Quality assurance: read the vacancy closely and prepare evidence that matches its stated testing and communication expectations. Treat QA as a target role to investigate, not an automatic promotion route.
  • Audio, UX, writing, marketing and support: build samples that resemble the work described in the listing, even if the project is personal or volunteer-based.

Choose one primary role for your resume headline and portfolio landing page. If you apply to a second family, create a separate version that changes the selected examples and explanation instead of sending the same general packet everywhere.

Build evidence that a hiring team can inspect

Employers interviewed for the IGDA’s 2023 Hireability Gaps report repeatedly valued practical experience, extracurricular work and strong portfolios. The most useful sample is not the largest one; it is the one that lets a reviewer understand your contribution quickly and verify the result.

Work-sample options supported by the field

Project route What it can show How to present it
Personal game Role-specific technique and the ability to finish a playable piece Link to the playable build or a video, identify your exact responsibilities, and note the tools used.
Mod Ability to work within an existing game or engine and make deliberate changes Explain what you changed, what you learned and where the result can be inspected or played.
Game-jam contribution Collaboration, scope control and delivery under a fixed deadline Name the team context, your tasks and the final result; separate your work from the group’s work.
Open-source contribution Ability to work in a shared code or content project Link to the contribution and describe the problem, your change and the outcome.
Internship or graduate programme Exposure to a professional workflow and feedback Follow the programme’s eligibility rules and describe concrete responsibilities rather than only listing the employer.

Make every sample legible in minutes

  1. Put the strongest, most relevant sample first.
  2. Write a short project summary: goal, your role, tools and finished result.
  3. Show the contribution that belongs to you, especially in team work.
  4. Provide a playable, viewable or inspectable link when appropriate, and check that it works without special access.
  5. Add a brief reflection on a constraint, decision or fix. This gives an interviewer a useful starting point without turning the portfolio into a diary.

One polished project can be enough to start applying if it directly matches the vacancy. Add a second sample when it demonstrates a different requirement, not simply because a portfolio feels too short.

Where to look for openings and contacts

Do not depend on one large job board. The IGDA Career Center combines several routes: job postings, Discord job-opportunities and looking-for-work channels, chapter events, special-interest groups and mentorship that can include resume advice and portfolio reviews.

Channel Use it for Action
Individual studio career pages Current vacancies and the employer’s own requirements Save listings that match your role, location and eligibility; reread them before submitting.
IGDA job postings Additional vacancies collected by a professional game-development organization Compare each posting with the employer’s original listing and follow the current application route.
IGDA Discord job-opportunities channel Announcements and leads that may not appear in your usual search Read channel rules, verify the employer and deadline, and keep a record of the original post.
IGDA looking-for-work channel Making your availability and target role visible to members Post a concise role statement with a portfolio link and the kind of feedback or opportunity you want.
Local chapters and special-interest groups Events, smaller-team contacts and discipline-specific conversations Attend relevant events, ask focused questions and follow up with a useful portfolio link rather than a generic request.
IGDA mentorship and portfolio reviews Resume feedback, portfolio critique and professional contacts Bring a specific target vacancy or role question so the feedback can be acted on.
IGDA Foundation Questline Early-career support for a cohort that includes international students and recent graduates Check the 2026 eligibility rules and deadlines directly before investing time in an application.

Use campus resources when you have access to them, but check whether an opportunity is limited to that institution. The University of Chicago’s 2025–26 guide, for example, describes its own named opportunities and dates; those details should not be assumed to apply to every student or region.

A repeatable search workflow

  1. Define the target. Write one primary role, two or three acceptable title variations and the locations or remote conditions you can accept. Include QA only if you are prepared to pursue the requirements shown in QA listings.
  2. Extract requirements. Review the IGDA Skills Hub and at least several current employer descriptions. Separate skills that appear repeatedly from requirements that are specific to one vacancy.
  3. Audit your evidence. For each repeated requirement, mark an existing sample, a sample you can create, or a gap that needs a realistic learning plan. Do not claim a skill that your work does not demonstrate.
  4. Build or finish one focused project. A personal game, mod, game-jam contribution or open-source change is useful only when it is complete enough to inspect and you can explain your part.
  5. Package the application. Put the target role near the top of the resume, select the most relevant samples and describe your contribution. Keep a separate version for a different discipline.
  6. Search multiple channels weekly. Check studio pages, IGDA postings and Discord channels, then add chapter and special-interest-group events. Record the closing date, location, eligibility and application link for every serious lead.
  7. Ask for informed feedback. Use a mentor, peer, chapter contact or portfolio review to test whether a stranger can identify your role and contribution quickly. Revise the portfolio, not just the wording of a message.
  8. Apply and learn from the pattern. Follow the listing’s instructions, answer the requested questions directly and keep notes on which role, sample and stage produced a response. Use that pattern to choose the next applications.

This process prevents a common failure mode: spending months collecting courses or sending generic applications without producing visible evidence for a particular job family.

How to evaluate QA as an entry route

QA can be a sensible role to investigate when you are interested in finding defects, reproducing problems and communicating clearly, but the available evidence does not establish it as a guaranteed step into game development. Neither the IGDA material nor the practical guidance supports promising that a QA hire will automatically move into engineering, design or another development discipline.

If QA is your immediate target

  • Read several current QA listings and list the duties and skills they actually request.
  • Create or select a sample that demonstrates those duties without presenting another person’s work as your own.
  • Use the same portfolio standard as any other discipline: explain your contribution and make the evidence easy to inspect.
  • Ask mentors and current professionals what progression looks like at a specific studio, while treating their answer as context rather than a promise.
  • Continue building the skills and samples for your longer-term discipline if development work remains your goal.

Applying to QA and applying to junior development roles are not mutually exclusive, but each application should be tailored to its own requirements.

Degrees, internships and other routes

The IGDA’s 2023 report presents mixed employer views on degrees. Some interviewees valued a gaming degree as a signal of interest; others said practical ability mattered more and that a degree was optional when a candidate could learn tools independently and show a strong portfolio. One anonymous interviewee said, “higher education degree is optional for most if not all of our jobs. If you are able to learn tools by yourself and you have a strong portfolio to back it up, we will certainly consider you even if you don’t have higher education.”

That is not a universal hiring rule. Treat the education requirement in each listing literally: if a vacancy requires a degree, meet that requirement or target another vacancy; if it lists a degree as preferred, strong work samples may still matter; if it does not mention one, do not add a credential simply to imitate another applicant.

Internships and graduate programmes

Internships and graduate programmes can provide structured experience, but the same IGDA report notes that hands-on opportunities were limited and concentrated at larger or better-resourced companies. Apply when you are eligible, but keep building independent evidence and applying to junior roles so your search does not depend on a small number of placements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Projects, jams and open source

These routes are available outside a formal programme and can demonstrate practical work when access to an internship is limited. Choose a scope you can finish, document the collaboration and connect the result to a vacancy’s requirements.

Mentorship and networking

Networking is most useful when it produces specific feedback, an introduction to a relevant event or a clearer understanding of a role. The IGDA Career Center’s mentorship and portfolio-review options are designed for that kind of practical help; they are not substitutes for a work sample.

Set expectations for a tight market

The IGDA Hireability Gaps report describes more entry-level talent than available positions. An anonymous interview participant summarized the situation this way: “there’s definitely more entry-level talent jobs available than there are roles available.” The report was published in 2023, so it is evidence of a tight hiring environment, not a live numerical measure of the 2026 market. Do not turn its qualitative observation into a vacancy percentage or a prediction about your odds.

The University of Chicago Career Advancement 2025–26 guide reports that more than 75% of UChicago students interested in gaming participate in an experiential programme to build portfolios during college. That figure describes one campus population; it is not a benchmark for all aspiring game workers. It does, however, illustrate why visible project evidence has become a normal part of preparation.

Prepare an application reviewers can evaluate

Resume and profile checklist

  • Name one target role prominently.
  • List projects in terms of your contribution, tools and finished result.
  • Put the most relevant sample first and make its link usable.
  • Match terminology to the vacancy without claiming requirements you cannot demonstrate.
  • Include internships, jams, open-source work and relevant extracurricular projects when they add evidence for the target role.
  • Keep contact details and links consistent across the resume, portfolio and professional profiles.

Interview preparation

Use the IGDA Skills Hub’s interview examples as prompts, then prepare to explain the decisions behind your own work. Be ready to describe a constraint, what you changed, how you collaborated and what you would improve. If a project was a team effort, state exactly what belonged to you. A clear account of your process gives the interviewer evidence that a link alone cannot provide.

Fix the most common search problems

“I have no experience.”

Start with one personal game, mod, game-jam contribution or open-source task that you can finish and document. Experience does not have to begin with a payroll record; it does have to produce inspectable evidence and an honest explanation of your role.

“I keep applying but hear nothing.”

Compare your materials with the listing again. If the target role is unclear or the first sample does not demonstrate a repeated requirement, change the evidence and positioning before sending another identical application. Ask for a portfolio review through a mentor, chapter or special-interest group.

“I cannot get an internship.”

Keep applying where eligible, but add junior vacancies, jams, open source and personal work. The IGDA report’s observation that opportunities can be concentrated at larger companies is a reason to widen the route, not to stop building experience.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“I do not have a degree.”

Read each listing’s education requirement and make your portfolio do the explanatory work for vacancies that allow equivalent practical ability. Do not assume either that every studio requires a degree or that none of them do.

“I do not know anyone in games.”

Use IGDA Discord channels, local chapters, special-interest groups and mentorship to create relevant contacts. Lead with a focused question or a request for feedback, and respect each community’s posting rules.

“I only want QA because it seems like the easiest entry.”

Investigate QA listings on their own terms and apply if the work fits you. Keep your longer-term development plan separate, because the available evidence does not support treating QA as a guaranteed shortcut.

A practical decision rule

Apply when three conditions are true: the vacancy accepts your eligibility and location, your portfolio contains at least one sample tied to its core requirements, and you can explain your personal contribution. If one condition is missing, use the gap to choose the next project, feedback request or search channel rather than sending an application you cannot support.
